Chapter 162: Luna Was Never the Third
Eden couldn’t move. Luna’s hand remained on his shoulder, warm and trembling. He could feel her fingers tightening slightly against the fabric of his shirt, almost as though she was afraid that if she let go, he would disappear again. Slowly, Eden turned around. She was really there. Not a memory, not a voice inside his mind, and not an illusion created by the story. Luna stood in front of him wearing the same clothes she’d been wearing when she disappeared. Her hair was damp from the rain, strands of it sticking against her cheeks, and her eyes were red as if she’d been crying for a long time.
Eden stared at her face and whispered her name. Luna smiled weakly and told him she had missed him. He reached toward her, but his hand stopped inches from her cheek. He was afraid to touch her, afraid she would vanish, and somehow just as afraid that she wouldn’t. When he finally asked if she was real, Luna let out a soft laugh and reminded him that he always said that. Eden admitted that this time he needed to know. She nodded in understanding, and when his fingers finally brushed against her cheek, he felt warmth, softness, and undeniable reality beneath them. His hand trembled as Luna closed her eyes.
For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Eden pulled her into his arms. She hugged him immediately, and he held her tighter than he intended, burying his face against her shoulder while she wrapped both arms around him. He confessed that he thought she was gone, and Luna quietly admitted that she had been. When he demanded to know how she was standing in front of him now, she didn’t answer. Instead, when he pulled away and pressed her again, she told him something far worse. She couldn’t stay. The words hit him immediately, and when he asked why, Luna explained that she only had a little time because this wasn’t her world.
Eden frowned and asked what that meant. Luna’s eyes moved past him toward Aria, the little boy, and the stranger in the black suit. Her expression hardened as she said they were lying to him. When Eden asked which one, Luna answered that all of them were. The stranger smiled, but Luna immediately stepped between them and warned Eden not to trust him. The man’s smile vanished. He told Luna she shouldn’t be there, reminding her that she had been removed and was supposed to remain inside Eden. Luna answered coldly that neither should he. For the first time, Eden saw fear behind the man’s eyes.
Luna turned back to Eden and told him to listen carefully. He promised he was listening, and she revealed that everything he had been told about her was wrong. Eden swallowed hard as she explained that she hadn’t been created when he died. She had existed before that. When he pushed further, asking if she meant before his death, before Aria, or even before the first story, Luna hesitated before finally admitting the truth. Yes, she had existed before all of it. Eden’s pulse quickened as he demanded to know who she really was. Luna looked toward the little boy, who immediately looked away. In a near whisper, she revealed that she had been there before he existed.
The boy’s face turned pale. Aria stepped forward and spoke Luna’s name, but Luna answered by saying that Aria already knew. Aria didn’t deny it. Eden’s frustration finally boiled over. He shouted at all of them to stop hiding the truth from him. The ground trembled beneath his anger as he pointed at Aria, accusing her of knowing Luna existed before him. Then he pointed at the boy and accused him of knowing he wasn’t really Eden. Finally, he pointed at the stranger and declared that he clearly knew who had created him. His voice cracked as he demanded to know why he was still the last person who understood what was happening.
Silence followed. Luna looked at him and admitted that he was right. When Eden demanded the truth, she took his hand and began explaining. He had never created her. He had never created Aria. He hadn’t even created this world. Eden’s eyes narrowed as he asked what exactly he had created. Luna squeezed his hand and answered that he had created the lie. When he asked what lie, Luna looked toward the sky and explained that when he was six years old, he hadn’t created a world because he feared losing everyone. He had created it because he had already lost them.
Eden’s breathing stopped. Luna revealed that he had never been six years old when the first story began. A flash of lightning illuminated the clouds as she told him he had actually been twenty-seven. The number felt strangely familiar. As he closed his eyes, a memory surfaced. He saw an older version of himself running through a hospital corridor. He heard screams. He felt another hand in his own. Luna’s hand. She was crying and begging him not to leave her. When Eden opened his eyes again, Luna saw immediately that he remembered.
He realized he had been twenty-seven, alive, and that he had known Luna long before any story began. Luna confirmed every realization. When he asked why he remembered being six, she answered that it was because the entire childhood was the lie. Then Aria finally spoke. Through tears, she admitted she had never been his sister. Eden froze as she revealed she was the person he had lost. Confused and desperate, he demanded to know who she really was. Aria looked toward the little boy. She said he knew the answer.
Everyone turned toward him. The boy no longer looked confident. He looked terrified. Eden crossed the distance between them and demanded the truth. At first the boy said nothing, but after Eden grabbed his shoulders and shouted, the answer finally came. Aria was his daughter. Everything seemed to stop. Eden released him and stared in disbelief. Luna covered her mouth while Aria closed her eyes. The boy repeated the truth in a trembling voice. Aria had been his daughter.
Eden looked at the little girl and suddenly saw her differently. Memories surfaced. A hospital room. A woman standing beside a bed. A child in her arms. Aria. His daughter. His chest tightened as he realized he had once had a family. Luna nodded through tears and confirmed it. When he asked where they were now, she answered that they were gone. Eden turned toward the stranger and demanded to know how they died. This time, the man answered.
The stranger told him that he had killed them. Eden immediately denied it, but the man calmly insisted it was true. According to him, Eden had been trying to save Luna. He had been given a choice. His family or Luna. Eden stared at Luna in horror while she shook her head and begged him not to listen. But he couldn’t stop. The truth dragged itself forward. Luna admitted she had been dying. So had Aria. There had only been enough time to save one of them.
Eden’s breathing became shallow as the pieces fell together. He had chosen Luna. Aria had died. He remembered Aria as a sister because he couldn’t survive remembering her as his daughter. He had rewritten reality. He had turned himself into a six-year-old boy. He had erased his family. He had transformed Luna into someone who could never leave him. When he asked if he had created her, Luna gently corrected him. He hadn’t created her. He had only created the version of her that he could survive. The real Luna had already died.
Eden staggered backward. The stranger explained that this was where the story had truly begun. Above them, the sky split open and books appeared. Only one opened. Its pages turned rapidly, revealing the life Eden had forgotten. Twenty-seven years. A wife. A daughter. Luna. A car crash. A hospital. An impossible choice. Death. Finally, he saw himself lying on a hospital floor, covered in blood, reaching toward someone while tears filled his eyes. His final thought echoed through the pages. He wished he could start over.
The page stopped turning. Then a new sentence appeared. Wish granted. Eden’s voice trembled as he demanded to know who had granted it. No one answered. Instead, the faceless creature stepped out from behind the tree. Luna backed away. Aria froze. The little boy began crying. Even the stranger lowered his head. Eden stared at the being and realized he recognized it. When he accused it of giving him another life, the creature calmly admitted it. Eden demanded to know why. The answer was simple. Because he had asked.
Confused, Eden asked what the creature wanted in return. The being tilted its head and answered that it wanted nothing. It had only wanted to see what he would do. Then it touched his forehead, and the world disappeared. Memories flooded him. Not the hospital, the tree, Luna, or Aria, but something older than all of them. He remembered standing in an empty room. He remembered creating the first thought, the first character, the first world, and the first story.
Then the truth finally emerged. He had never asked for a second chance. What he had asked for was far worse. He had wanted to know what would happen if he could live every life he ever imagined. The creature smiled as understanding settled over him. Every world, every person, every love, every death, and every story had belonged to him. They were not separate lives. They were all part of the same endless journey. For thousands of years he had experienced them one after another, and every time he reached the end, he forgot.
The creature quietly reminded him that he had wanted to experience everything. Eden stared into the darkness and realized he had been doing exactly that forever. When he asked why he remembered now, the creature revealed that he had finally reached the last story. Eden looked toward Luna, tears shining in her eyes, and asked what the last story was. The creature answered that it was the story where he had to decide whether he still wanted to live.
The world began collapsing around them. Luna reached for one of his hands and Aria reached for the other. For the first time, he held both. The woman he loved and the daughter he had forgotten stood beside him as the world crumbled apart. Eden looked at them, then at everything falling away around them, and finally made his choice. He didn’t want another life. He wanted this one.
The creature smiled. The world fell silent. Then something broke. Not the world itself, but the rules holding it together. Somewhere far beyond the story, someone reading the final page suddenly whispered in surprise. The page turned by itself, and a new sentence appeared. Eden has made his choice. Beneath it, another line slowly formed.
Now the Reader must make theirs.
