Xuanqing Guard
Chapter 632: Save Me
Shen Hao caught sight of Wu Kai. If he’d been any slower, Wu Kai would be dead.
A Barbarian wielding a three-foot long blade had hacked straight through Wu Kai’s Stone Armor Skill, slashing deep into his shoulder. If Wu Kai let his grip slip, he’d be cleaved clean in two.
As Shen Hao passed by, a surge of soul power enveloped the scene, then he swung his blade and decapitated the Barbarian.
“You holding up or not?”
“Of course I am. But this time it got to the bone, hurts like hell. Got any pills on you? Give me one.”
Shen Hao dragged Wu Kai to the rear, pulled out a healing pill from his storage bag, and said, “If your bone’s broken, set it first and then use the medicine…”
“Alright, alright, I know this stuff better than you do. Tsk, tsk, Xuanqing Guard really are loaded, just casually handing out middle-grade pills like that.”
Shen Hao shook his head, didn’t linger for chit-chat. The situation up on the camp wall was even deadlier; he had no time to stay behind. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ
Checking the time, it was nearing 7 a.m.; half the two hours promised by Cheng Jinhou had already slipped by. But just now, Shen Hao glanced outside the wall—at least on the eastern side, there wasn’t a hint of reinforcements coming.
“Shen Hao, you planning to keep holding your ground here?” One of the three guards asked him quietly, taking a brief pause.
“If I don’t, you think I can get away?”
“We’ll protect you, you could escape.”
Shen Hao shook his head. He wasn’t about to dig in and play the diehard—his loyalty to the Jingjiu Dynasty was nowhere near that. But right now wasn’t the time to try and withdraw.
Leave now? Cheng Jinhou wouldn’t hesitate to order his execution. Three Primordial Pill Realm guards didn’t amount to much here. Just that Profound Sea Realm Elder from Celestial Toad Sect at Cheng Jinhou’s side could swat Shen Hao and all three guards dead with a single slap.
If he was going to leave, he’d have to wait until the military camp was breached and things became totally irreparable. For now, he had to blend in; if the others risked their lives, Shen Hao had to do the same, or else someday old scores would come back to haunt him.
And even now, although Shen Hao couldn’t figure out what scheme Cheng Jinhou was plotting, he was certain—the man wasn’t bluffing, he definitely had a backup plan.
Compared to others fighting for their lives, Shen Hao was unexpectedly enjoying the thrill of killing. For him, it really was just close calls with no real danger. Barbarians at his cultivation level couldn’t resist his soul power, and even body cultivators in the First and Second Layers of the Primordial Pill Realm found themselves easily bound by it, their heads taken without much effort.
If he ran into someone with soul strength far exceeding his, the three Primordial Pill Realm guards would surround and finish the target.
So, though the eastern wall was hanging by a thread, when it came to cultivators, Shen Hao solidly protected that stretch.
Even his Black Beast Tattoo was occasionally stirred by “hunger,” but in the end Shen Hao forced it down. Too many eyes, too many experts around—if he dared devour souls now, he’d expose himself, and the Profound Sea Realm cultivators would hunt him as an Evil Cultivator.
But the interplay across the battlefield was now abundantly clear.
Even if the Jingjiu Dynasty defenders weren’t outmatched among cultivators, on the soldier level they were faltering. The military camp may still stand, but its defenders were getting ground down by the Barbarians!
Shen Hao estimated that since midnight, the Barbarians had piled at least ten thousand corpses below the walls, and casualties inside the camp had already surpassed two thousand. The thinning battle line and intensifying attack suggested they’d never last till noon.
“Hah!”
A blast of Qi Force suddenly shot overhead. Shen Hao looked up in alarm, and saw that the Qi Force was actually a person.
Profound Sea Realm cultivators could use magic to glide through the air—cloud-riding, sword-control, and so on—but Shen Hao had never heard of aerial movement at such speed. “Like thunder” was maybe exaggerating, but definitely faster than any common bird!
Looking back, Shen Hao gazed at the central watchtower of the camp—distant, but he could roughly see: the Celestial Toad Sect cultivator Wu Yuan, who’d been guarding Cheng Jinhou atop the tower, was now gone.
“Was that Wu Yuan who just flew off?” Shen Hao tossed a freshly severed tiger head down the wall, and asked the guard beside him.
“Should be. Sense closely—over there, a new surge of True Qi is crashing around. Wu Yuan joined in.”
There were already Profound Sea Realm cultivators battling far out east—the Valley of Love Flowers Elder Yuan Qingyun. Now Wu Yuan had rushed over, and at such speed—something must be happening there.
Shen Hao was curious what the Profound Sea Realm battlefield looked like. Subconsciously, he glanced at the watchtower in the camp. Earlier, Cheng Jinhou had nearly been assaulted—supposedly to protect Inspector Xu Jie, but the reality was Cheng Jinhou got his arm injured.
That meant the Barbarians had experts capable of reaching Cheng Jinhou.
What if Cheng Jinhou suddenly died? At minimum, the camp’s morale would face catastrophic collapse—total disintegration was likely.
Yet, despite this crisis, Wu Yuan still departed, which showed Yuan Qingyun needed backup. That left Cheng Jinhou exposed. If the Barbarians launched another sudden attack, could Cheng Jinhou be in danger?
Just as that worry crossed Shen Hao’s mind, he was forced to focus again—a fresh wave of Barbarians climbing the wall pulled his attention back. If Cheng Jinhou alone in the watchtower was possibly endangered, right now the wall was about to get smashed through.
No matter how fierce Shen Hao was, he didn’t have spare energy to help the ordinary soldiers. Killing nonstop, every time he glanced around, a familiar face was sprawled dead in a pool of blood.
Take Wu Kai, for example.
The guy was rescued by Shen Hao again, but this time he was much worse off—a spear skewered clean through his belly, nearly pinning him to the ground. Blood bubbling from his mouth, twisted in what looked like a grin.
Shen Hao could only help seal off Wu Kai’s blood vessels to staunch the bleeding, then snapped and pulled out the spear, fed him a pill, and stuffed his guts back in, wrapping the wound tight.
“If you don’t die, remember you owe me two middle-grade pills. If you do, I’ll consider them sent for your funeral.”
Wu Kai was so full of bloody bubbles he couldn’t speak, just managed to nod weakly at Shen Hao.
Shen Hao was about to say something else when he caught a sudden terror in Wu Kai’s eyes. Shen Hao’s heart clenched; he quickly looked up and saw that, unknown to all, a stretch of wall on the east side had cleared out—within several yards, every soldier had been hacked in two, and a member of the Wolf Race wielding a massive blade stood amidst the remains…
