Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 480: Backbiting
"What about me? I’m more worried you’ll fall for me!"
With that, Nina Scott let go of him, a look of disgust on her face.
"Don’t you even think about trying anything. And whatever you do, don’t dream about me tonight. Knowing how conceited you are, I’d have to beat you up in the dream, too!"
Nina Scott even shook her fist at him before finally heading upstairs.
As Nina Scott left, Miles Mercer scoffed. ’Like her? Dream about her? This woman sure has a wild imagination.’
Miles Mercer sent a message to Ivy Sherwood, letting her know he had dropped Nina off safely, and then headed home.
In the middle of the night, Miles Mercer jolted awake from a dream. Her words had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. He had actually... dreamt of that woman!
...
After Yara Scott returned home, she saw the family’s cook still in the kitchen simmering soup and quickly went to help.
"This must be for my brother, right? Let me take over."
Seeing this, the cook couldn’t help but praise her, "You’re so thoughtful, Miss."
Mrs. Scott, who overheard from nearby, also felt a surge of pride. Yara Scott had always been so obedient.
After giving the pot a stir, Yara Scott came out of the kitchen. Seeing Mrs. Scott, she walked over and hugged her from behind.
"Mom, look how busy Brother is. He’s not even back at this hour. He’s working so hard."
"Your brother only took over the company a year ago. It’s in a growth phase right now, so of course he’s busy."
"I know. It’s all my fault I can’t help Brother. If only I were a boy, I could be a proper support for him."
Mrs. Scott held Yara Scott’s hand. "You’re my sweet, considerate girl. Just having you by my side makes me happy."
"Mom, I also heard Brother wants to compete for a project, but he’s lacking the right connections. I actually had dinner with Cheryl Yates today. You know, she’s about to marry the mayor’s son. I was wondering if she could help a little, though it’s probably a long shot. While we were there, I ran into Nina. I just wanted to say hello, but she was so hostile to me."
"Our Yara is still the best. You know how to care for your brother and your family, and you even try to find ways to help. Unlike that Nina Scott, who doesn’t even show a shred of concern!"
Just the mention of Nina Scott was enough to sour Mrs. Scott’s mood.
She had tried to like her, but Nina Scott was too blunt and rebellious, always defying her. She simply couldn’t bring herself to like this daughter.
"Mom, Cheryl did mention that her fiancé has a friend who is also very powerful—even higher-ranking than the mayor. He might be able to help Brother."
"Really?"
Mrs. Scott knew that Seth Scott had indeed been at his wit’s end over a project recently.
If someone could really help him, that would be wonderful.
Yara Scott nodded and continued, "But this man is over thirty and has a son. I heard he’s looking to marry someone soon to take care of his child. Mom, I really want to help Brother, but... I also want to stay by your side."
Mrs. Scott asked, "This man is very powerful?"
Yara Scott nodded. "Yes. Even higher-ranking than Cheryl Yates’s fiancé."
"I understand," Mrs. Scott said. "Nina Scott’s broke boyfriend is useless anyway. If this can really help Seth, I’ll try to get in touch."
"Mom, isn’t it wrong to send Nina? If Brother finds out, he’ll definitely be angry."
"You’re just as soft-hearted as your brother. That Nina Scott is one of the Scotts too. She was born to obey me. I’ve let her run wild for over twenty years; it’s time she settled down and got married!" Mrs. Scott’s face was cold.
"But Mom..."
"Don’t you worry about this. I’ll handle it."
"Okay, Mom." Yara Scott smiled secretly. This was exactly the outcome she had been hoping for.
...
Nina Scott had been incredibly busy the past two days, but then she got an unexpected call from Mrs. Scott.
Mrs. Scott claimed she was sick and in the hospital, asking Nina Scott to come visit her.
Nina Scott wasn’t sure if it was true. How could she have suddenly fallen ill?
She called Seth Scott and found out that Mrs. Scott really was sick.
Only then did Nina Scott put her work aside and rush to the hospital.
Even though she disliked Mrs. Scott, she was still her mother, and a flicker of familial duty remained.
When Nina Scott arrived at the hospital, she found that someone else was there as well.
"I’ll come back later, then." Nina Scott started to leave with the fruit and flowers she had brought.
"No, get in here!" Mrs. Scott’s face was ruddy and full of color; she didn’t look very sick at all.
"This is Mr. Walker. He came especially to see me." Mrs. Scott then introduced Nina, "This is my daughter. She’s quite the career woman—runs her own studio."
Nina Scott felt uncomfortable listening to this introduction. "What are you doing? Setting me up on a blind date?"
Mrs. Scott was momentarily speechless. This Mr. Walker, Cameron Walker, was the man Yara Scott had told her about.
The smile on Mrs. Scott’s face stiffened for a moment before she forced it back on. "Mr. Walker is a guest. You will hold your tongue."
Cameron Walker was preparing to leave, but Mrs. Scott said, "Quick, see him out for me. It’s not convenient for me to get up."
Nina Scott found the whole thing ridiculous. ’As if I can’t see what Mom is trying to do.’
Nina Scott started walking out. "I’ll see you out."
Cameron Walker nodded and walked out with Nina Scott. "Miss Scott, you’re much more beautiful than in your photos. I think we should get to know each other."
His words were more than direct. Nina Scott replied, "I’m sorry, but I had no idea about any of this. I have no plans to get married at the moment, so I’m afraid you’ve wasted a trip, Mr. Walker."
Cameron Walker was clearly displeased. What was the Scott Family playing at? He had taken time out of his busy schedule to come here, only to be made a fool of!
"It’s fine. We can start by getting to know each other," he said. "My circumstances are quite good, and I’m very satisfied with how you are in person." His family background and career were his main selling points.
As he spoke, Cameron Walker gave a brief introduction of himself before continuing, "Although I’m divorced, I’m sure I’d treat my wife very well. Once we’re married, you wouldn’t have to work. You’d just need to help me take care of my son. And as for your brother’s project, I can help you take care of that, too."
Nina Scott couldn’t believe it. ’So the Scotts found me a job as a nanny.’
"I’m sorry, I’m not interested in raising someone else’s child."
"My child is very well-behaved. And I can give you a generous allowance every month."
"I can earn my own money, so why would I need to spend someone else’s? We’re truly not a good match. Besides, I’m sure my mother didn’t tell you... I have a boyfriend."
"What?" Cameron Walker was taken aback. He hadn’t heard anything about that.
Just then, Nina Scott’s phone rang.
Nina Scott glanced at the screen. It was Miles Mercer.
"Hey, honey."
Miles Mercer: "..."
’This woman called him honey again!’
"Nina Scott, you left something in my car." Miles Mercer was calling because he’d found a bracelet in his car, which he figured she must have left behind the other day.
"I’ll be home soon, don’t worry. What? You want to come pick me up? No, no, that’s not necessary. I know you can’t stand to be away from me, but you don’t have to be this clingy."
Miles Mercer: "?"
’This woman has to be doing this on purpose. She’s probably going to claim she was just acting again!’
’How could it always be such a perfect coincidence? Is she always just acting?’
