Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close

Chapter 391: I Am Pursuing Ivy Sherwood

  • Next Chapter

Ivy Sherwood didn’t know why Elijah Hawthorne was looking for her, but she was free anyway. It was also a good chance to thank Mr. Hawthorne for taking her home last night.

Ivy Sherwood heated up the sobering-up soup and drank it. Her mind felt much clearer, but her stomach was in knots.

She hadn’t thrown up at all last night despite drinking so much, but now she felt nauseous. She rushed to the bathroom and threw up everything.

After quickly washing her face, Ivy Sherwood took a shower. Once she was sure she smelled fresh, she received a message from Elijah Hawthorne telling her to come downstairs.

Downstairs, Elijah Hawthorne’s car was parked right by the elevator entrance. He got out and straightened his clothes.

He had spent most of the night dealing with the trouble Quentin Blackwood had caused, so he’d barely slept. His eyes fixed on a car parked a short distance away, and a smirk played on his lips.

Sure enough, a few seconds later, the person in the car got out and walked up to him. "What are you doing here?"

Elijah Hawthorne wasn’t surprised to see Quentin Blackwood in the slightest. "Well, well. Her knight in shining armor hasn’t left yet?"

Quentin Blackwood’s brow furrowed deeply. Elijah Hawthorne continued, "I’m here to pick up Ivy Sherwood, of course. Just because you don’t have a chance doesn’t mean I don’t."

"Stay away from Ivy Sherwood!" Quentin Blackwood’s eyes were bloodshot, blazing with a warning.

The truth was, Quentin Blackwood had never left. He’d been waiting in his car ever since coming downstairs.

’He couldn’t believe Elijah Hawthorne still had the gall to show up!’

"And what if I don’t?" Elijah Hawthorne met Quentin’s gaze unflinchingly, his arrogance on full display.

"What are you trying to do?"

Elijah Hawthorne said, "Can’t you tell? I’m pursuing Ivy Sherwood, of course."

"What did you say?" Quentin Blackwood’s gaze was sharp, his eyes bone-chillingly cold.

But Elijah Hawthorne wasn’t scared. "If you can be with Ivy Sherwood, why can’t I? Heh, I’ll be honest with you. I don’t actually like her, but seeing how you want her and can’t have her... I’m starting to get interested. Besides, whoever marries Ivy Sherwood gets a massive fortune, right? And who’s going to turn their nose up at money?"

"How did you know about that?"

"What, are you the only one who’s allowed to know?"

"I’m warning you, don’t get any ideas about Ivy Sherwood. You won’t be able to handle the consequences."

But Elijah Hawthorne was precisely the type who couldn’t be threatened. "Sorry, but you don’t call the shots here."

Elijah Hawthorne glanced down at his watch. "Ivy Sherwood should be down any minute. Are you sure you want to be seen standing here talking to me?"

Elijah Hawthorne’s arrogance was off the charts; he was acting with complete impunity.

’Who would have thought... The great, untouchable holy prodigy, who looks down on everyone and everything, would one day be brought down from his pedestal.’

’He really thought Quentin Blackwood would be level-headed his entire life, that he’d never have a weakness. But in the end, his downfall was a woman.’

’But he, Elijah Hawthorne, was different. He had no weaknesses. He would never be like Quentin Blackwood.’

The elevator indicator showed it was about to arrive. As much as Quentin Blackwood hated it, he had no choice but to leave.

Seeing Quentin Blackwood look so defeated filled Elijah Hawthorne with an indescribable sense of satisfaction.

After all, there was nothing more satisfying in the world than seeing your arch-nemesis miserable.

Soon, the elevator arrived at the first basement level, and Ivy Sherwood stepped out. She was surprised to see Elijah Hawthorne waiting right by the doors.

"Mr. Hawthorne, thank you for taking me home last night, and for making the sobering-up soup."

Elijah Hawthorne smiled and deliberately leaned close to Ivy’s ear. "Don’t mention it."

As he spoke, he raised a hand and firmly brushed his fingers across Ivy’s cheek.

Watching from afar, Quentin Blackwood’s fists clenched. ’That Elijah Hawthorne... It seems the trouble I made for him last night wasn’t nearly enough.’

Elijah Hawthorne glanced toward the other car out of the corner of his eye, a smile touching his lips.

He glanced down at his hand. Sure enough, it was coated with a dark substance.

He knew a thing or two about cosmetics. ’Most women use foundations that are a bit on the lighter side. Why is Ivy Sherwood’s so dark?’

A flicker of something crossed his eyes, but his expression remained unchanged. "Come on, get in the car. I’m taking you somewhere."

Ivy Sherwood had no idea where he was taking her. "Mr. Hawthorne, is there something you need?"

"You’ll find out when we get there," Elijah Hawthorne said, deliberately being cryptic.

Ivy started to walk forward, but Elijah deliberately stuck out his foot, tripping her. She didn’t see it and stumbled. Elijah immediately steadied her, his hand landing naturally on her waist.

From his car, Quentin Blackwood saw red. "!!"

If looks could kill, Elijah Hawthorne would have died several times over.

Quentin Blackwood grabbed his phone and called Zane Linton. "Get rid of Elijah Hawthorne. Now!"

"I’m sorry." Ivy thought she had tripped because she wasn’t watching where she was going.

"It’s nothing," Elijah Hawthorne said, still holding her. But as soon as Ivy regained her balance, she quickly took a step back, putting some distance between them.

Elijah Hawthorne sensed that Ivy’s face held a secret. His original plan was to take her to breakfast and stage a little drama to see what she looked like underneath all that makeup.

And the contact just now had confirmed his suspicions.

Elijah Hawthorne and Ivy Sherwood got into the car. As it pulled away, Quentin Blackwood immediately followed.

Elijah Hawthorne took Ivy to a restaurant. She was surprised he was just taking her out for a meal.

Elijah Hawthorne said, "You probably haven’t eaten breakfast yet, have you? I haven’t either, so why don’t we grab a bite together."

With that, he led her inside.

The breakfast rush was mostly over, so the restaurant wasn’t too crowded. Off to the side, a young couple seemed to be arguing.

Elijah led Ivy over, and she followed a step behind him.

The young couple was still arguing. The woman held a glass of water in her hand. "You do nothing but lie to me! We’re through! Go find your little mistress!"

With that, she hurled the water at him.

The man dodged, and the water splashed directly onto Ivy’s face.

"Oh my god, I’m so sorry!" the woman quickly apologized.

Ivy: "..."

’Why does this water have a strange smell?’

Nearby, Elijah Hawthorne shot the arguing couple a look, and they scurried away. He quickly pulled out a silk pocket square and handed it to Ivy. "Here, wipe your face. Your makeup is a mess."

’Is he serious?’ Ivy blinked.

’To prevent this exact situation, she always used waterproof foundation and setting powder. How could a single glass of water make it run?’

What she didn’t know was that this had all been orchestrated by Elijah Hawthorne. That wasn’t just water in the glass; it was makeup remover.

Ivy wiped her face with her hand and saw that her entire palm was now dark.

Her face was a streaky mess, as if she’d just crawled out of a chimney. Elijah Hawthorne couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

Ivy frantically pulled a small mirror from her purse. When she saw her reflection, she nearly gasped in horror.

"Mr. Hawthorne, please wait a moment. I’m going to the restroom to clean myself up."

Elijah stopped her. "No need. I brought you here, so I share some of the responsibility. How about this: I’ll have someone deliver a change of clean clothes, and I’ll call a makeup artist to come do your makeup personally. I guarantee they’ll make you look absolutely beautiful, Miss Sherwood."

Ivy met Elijah Hawthorne’s deep, knowing gaze. ’Does he know something?’

’When he brought me home last night... did he see my real face?’
