Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King
Chapter 328: The First King Of Wolves
The dam broke the way dams always break. One crack. Then everything.
Thornback stood. The man who had switched sides twice in two days and would do it again if the wind changed had apparently found a direction he intended to keep.
"Thornback stands with Shadowfell."
Grimscar didn’t stand. He uncovered his face from his hands for the first time in two sessions, which for Grimscar was the equivalent of a standing ovation and a twenty-one-gun salute.
"Grimscar seconds. Obviously."
The small packs went next. One by one. No speeches. No performances. Just names and nods delivered by men who had spent their entire careers being too small to matter and had just been offered portal anchors, wards, and a defense network funded by the man in the chair. The math was simple and they were done pretending it wasn’t.
"Redclaw Reach backs Shadowfell."
Reed leaned back in the upper stands like a proud parent at a recital where his kid just nailed the solo.
Reed: Count?
Damon: Thirty-one. Thirty-two. Thirty-three with Frosthollow.
Reed: That’s majority.
Damon: That was majority at twenty-four. Everything after is just the universe rubbing it in.
Brennan was gripping the armrest of his seat with both hands. His eyes were wide and wet and fixed on watching the only person who had ever believed in him become King of Wolves.
Damon’s hand found his shoulder. One squeeze. Brennan’s jaw trembled once, then set.
Ironmaw was still in his chair. His token was still in the slot. He hadn’t touched it since the incident and was treating it the way a man treats an ex he’s been forced to sit next to at a wedding.
"Ironmaw seconds."
Every Alpha had voted yes outside of one.
All eyes hit Renwick Lunaris, whose stone-mask face had terrified kings, crushed rebellions, and still somehow looked bored about both.
Renwick let the silence soak. He wasn’t thinking. He’d already voted in his head before Redmoon wrapped the motion. He was just enjoying the faces. This was how he relaxed.
"Lunaris backs Shadowfell."
Nicholas rose from his seat.
"Accepted. This council just did something that has never been done in the history of Nyros. Forty-nine Alphas agreed on something. Let that sink in for a moment because it may never happen again."
The room laughed. The tension cracked.
"What we built tonight is bigger than any one pack. Bigger than any one Alpha. Every wolf on this continent just gained the protection of every other wolf on this continent. That is what this table means. I intend to honor it."
He paused, looking down at the map.
"The crown goes where the work goes. Right now the work is keeping every wolf on this continent alive. Investigations begin within the week. The war council convenes in thirty days at Shadowfell. Every Alpha is expected to send a delegate or attend personally."
He sat.
In the stands, Gavyn exhaled through his nose. Door Kid was staring at the white map with the face of a boy who had joined a wolf pack four days ago and was now watching his princess’s mate become King of Wolves and processing that information with the same brain that was still recovering from multiple traumatic events that would require years of therapy.
Gavyn put his hand on Door Kid’s shoulder. No words. The hand said everything.
Grimscar stood first. The man who had spent two sessions with his face in his hands rose like something had physically lifted him.
"To the King of Wolves."
Four words. The chamber detonated.
Ashfang was next. Fist to chest. "To the King of Wolves."
Redmoon. Standing. The diplomat who measured every syllable he ever spoke didn’t measure this one. "To the King of Wolves."
Ironmaw hit his fist against the table so hard his token jumped. "KING OF WOLVES."
Then it spread like wildfire. Fists hit chests. Chairs scraped back. Voices stacked on voices until the chamber was a wall of sound that shook the torches in their brackets.
"KING OF WOLVES."
"KING OF WOLVES."
"KING OF WOLVES."
The Blackmoor twins stood at the exact same second, said it at the exact same volume, and for the first time in recorded history, agreed on something without arguing about it afterward.
Every Beta in the upper stands was on their feet. Every Gamma. Every officer. Every wolf who had walked into this building thinking they served one Alpha walked out serving two, and the second one had just been crowned by a room full of kings who had never knelt for anyone.
They weren’t kneeling now either. They were standing. Every last one of them. Because the King of Wolves didn’t want men on their knees. He wanted them on their feet. Most kings demanded knees. Nicholas demanded spines. The distinction was the whole goddamn point and every wolf in that chamber felt it.
Renwick stood. Collected his token. Tucked it into his jacket beside the report Gavyn had written at three in the morning.
He looked at Nicholas one final time.
The look lasted two seconds and communicated a library’s worth of information. Respect. Warning. The quiet acknowledgment of a man who had just watched this king graduate to a board Renwick could never play and the complicated pride of a predator recognizing a bigger predator and accepting, for the first time in his life, that the food chain had a new top.
He left without a word.
His eight wolves followed. Gavyn at the right. Door Kid at the left. The formation was tight. Clean. The best goddamn flock in the building.
The door closed behind them.
If someone had told these forty-nine Alphas two days ago that they would unanimously crown a High King of Nyros, every one of them would have laughed. Tonight, every one of them stood. The difference between those two moments was Nicholas Shadowfell and the woman who broke his map.
In the upper stands, Damon Tavian leaned back in his chair and let out a breath he had been holding since his king’s heart stopped beating on a corridor floor.
Damon: We did it, Nick.
Nicholas didn’t respond through the mindlink. He responded the old-fashioned way. He looked up at his Beta from the table and gave a single nod.
The nod was the last domino. The real one. It fell between two men in a chamber full of wolves who would argue about this summit for generations, and none of them would ever know about the nod because it wasn’t for them.
It was for a Beta who had held the line when Nicholas couldn’t. It was the respect a king gives his second in command who has more than earned it. It was the nod of a king who knew his days of working with Damon were limited because he was fully planning on crowning Damon Tavian as the Alpha King of Stonehowl, and Damon had no idea.
The thought sat in his chest like a stone he wasn’t ready to carry because Damon Tavian had been his right hand since the day Nicholas became Alpha.
But that is a story for another day.
Thank you for watching The Real Alphas of Nyros. The season finale is over. The Gods are flipping back to the dragons because somebody left two brothers and a wife unsupervised and the building may already be on fire.
