Chapter 320: Legally Wed, Technically Dead

Seventy-one dominoes. The chain had burned through princes, portals, and sacred demon breeding hymns. There were only a few left before the grand finale.

Some dominoes kill kings. This one created a queen.

DOMINO 72: THE GOAT TAKES A VICTORY LAP

GREYHALL CROSSING — SHADOWFELL MEETING ROOM — 8:00 AM

Damon Tavian slid a document across the table.

Nicholas picked it up and read. His eyes traveled down the page with the speed of a man whose literacy was being personally tested by the audacity of every subsequent sentence.

Reed leaned over to skim it alongside him.

Nicholas looked at the signature on the bottom of the document. "Renwick Lunaris signed this."

"Yes."

"Willingly."

"Willingly is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence."

Nicholas set the document down like it was a live explosive. "Walk me through it."

"I took thine hand and kiss’d thy ring." Damon allowed himself one breath. Victory laps deserved oxygen. "She disobeyed an Alpha command and marked you. He needed that to go away. So I brought up Lex Relictae. The Law of the Bonded Widow. A fated mate to the Alpha retains full standing, full protection, and full immunity from prosecution by any foreign pack for actions taken in defense of, or in grief for, her king."

"He accepted that?" Nicholas asked, one eyebrow raised.

"You had already publicly claimed her multiple times in front of every Alpha on the continent. Every Beta, captain, and officer present. So I let him know that. He saw you dead on the floor. This was what you would have wanted. To protect her. If he signed, we stayed silent about the whole incident. Everyone wins."

"Everyone wins," Reed repeated. "By that you mean you bent Renwick over a barrel and he thanked you for the lube."

"Barrel implies force. I simply showed him the barrel, described the view, and he climbed on top of it on his own."

Nicholas sat back in his chair with the posture of a man whose Beta had just done his homework, aced the exam, and somehow also fucked the teacher.

"It grants her full standing as Luna of Shadowfell."

"Correct."

"Full immunity from prosecution."

"Also correct."

"Permanent recognition as the Alpha’s bonded mate." Nicholas listed the terms the way a man reads the side effects on medication he’s already swallowed.

"Yes."

"That is a marriage contract, Damon."

"It’s a marriage contract that Renwick thinks is a widow’s clause. The beauty is in the framing."

Nicholas looked at the ceiling. The ceiling offered zero counsel.

"You married our Alpha," Reed stated. "Just want to make sure we’re all hearing this."

"Semantics."

"Not only that. You married our Alpha while he was a corpse on a corridor floor."

"I prefer the term ’strategically leveraged a legal framework during a narrow window of opportunity.’ But yes. Same thing."

"You tricked Renwick Lunaris into giving us his daughter."

Damon blinked once with the calm of a man who had set the building on fire and brought marshmallows. "Tricked is a strong word. If you mean, I strategically guided Renwick Lunaris into protecting his daughter from treason charges, then yes."

Reed looked at Damon like a man discovering his best friend had been a serial killer the entire time and the bodies were all people Reed also wanted dead.

"Oh, I forgot to mention. This cost us nothing. And we are third in line if Drakencrest backs out. Assuming Landon Solveil is second. We are the contingency."

Reed looked at Nicholas. Nicholas looked at Reed. A silent, two-man conversation occurred in the span of half a second that roughly translated to: this motherfucker right here is my guy.

"Damon."

"Alpha."

"If I had actually died."

"You didn’t."

"If I had."

"Then the contract would have protected her as your widow with full Luna standing, permanent immunity, and a seat at the Shadowfell table that Renwick could never revoke. She would have been untouchable. That was the point."

Damon’s throat moved once. Underneath the composure, underneath the legal language and the strategic framing, was a man who had knelt beside a king with no pulse and decided in that moment that grief was a luxury he would earn later and the only thing that mattered was making sure the woman Nicholas loved couldn’t be touched.

The room absorbed that the way a congregation absorbs a sermon delivered by a priest who also happens to be the arsonist.

Nicholas picked up the document. Read it one more time. Set it down.

"You did good, Damon."

Four words. The Alpha equivalent of a standing ovation, a medal ceremony, and a tearful father-of-the-bride speech compressed into a single sentence delivered at room temperature.

Damon gave a single nod.

Reed cleared his throat. "Quick question."

"Go ahead."

"When exactly were you going to tell me about this?"

"I told you in the corridor. You asked what I had done and I said ’I’ve said too much.’"

"That is the opposite of telling me."

"I gave you the emotional experience of the information without the informational burden. You’re welcome."

Both men went silent.

"Damon. How did you get him to sign it within the hour?"

"I drafted it in twelve minutes. I let him read it for forty-five. Men who feel rushed catch things. Men who feel patient miss them. He found three things to change. I let him change two. The third one, I pushed back on, lost the argument on purpose, and conceded. He left the table believing he had won the negotiation on granular terms while missing the macro entirely."

Nicholas grinned and shook his head. "You outplayed Renwick Lunaris."

The praise landed on Damon like a piss-taking, pride-fueling, power-validating pat on the back from the man he’d just posthumously married.

"Don’t forget I did it while you were dead, which I think adds a certain flair."

"I have never been more terrified and more proud."

"I’d be concerned if you weren’t both."

Chess has kings. Poker has aces. Shadowfell has their Beta.
