Chapter 1586: Becoming a candidate

With everything solved in the outer part of the Dao Sect, Lin Fan’s heart was settled as he headed back to the inner part of the Dao Sect.

He would leave things as they were in this outer part since it wasn’t his place to interfere any more than this. Especially since he had already basically emptied out the outer part of the Dao Sect of anything valuable.

Whatever they found now was nothing more than scraps from Lin Fan.

So he didn’t really care how they divided these things.

However, when Lin Fan arrived at the gate to the inner sect, he couldn’t help being surprised by what he saw.

When he came to this gate before, there was no reaction from it as it opened for him. Rather, he had even had to force it open because his authority wasn’t great enough to open it on his own.

This was something that he understood now after seeing the way that this gate opened for him.

In a way, it was almost as if it was welcoming an owner back.

"A gate used by the Dao Sect wouldn’t be a normal gate. It would be some kind of spiritual item that would have its own awareness." Lin Fan couldn’t help looking at the gate with an inquisitive look, almost as if he was seeing something that was completely new to him.

Other than the way that the gate opened, there was also a different sensation that came from the token that was in his hand.

From the way that it felt, it was almost as if there was some kind of connection that had been formed with the gate that hadn’t been there previously.

After making it through the gate, Lin Fan could feel that the pressure around him had also changed.

When he came to the inner part of the Dao Sect previously, it was as if there was some kind of invisible pressure that was on him. But now there was only a bit of pressure that seemed to come naturally from this place.

It was as if this inner part of the Dao Sect was no longer rejecting him like it had done before.

"If only I knew about this earlier, then I would have finished everything sooner."

There was a trace of regret that filled Lin Fan as he thought this to himself, but it wasn’t as if feeling regret would change anything. Since things had already reached this point, the only thing that he could do was keep going forward.

The first place that he went to was the cave of illusions.

It only took a single thought for him to enter and make his way to the fifth room, but he found that he was already late. When he entered the room, he found that Ye Qing Huan and Xiao Mu were just sitting there waiting for him with the array spirit.

When they saw him, they didn’t say anything.

However, the way that they looked at him was almost as if they were trying to figure out what had changed with him.

When the array spirit came over, he looked at him as if he was seeing him for the first time.

"It seems like you were able to gain the missing authority." That was all that the array spirit said in the end.

Lin Fan wasn’t the only one that looked at the array spirit with a strange look, it was also Ye Qing Huan and Xiao Mu that did the same thing. Though in Xiao Mu’s case, it was more surprising considering that Xiao Mu should have had information on the Dao Sect to begin with.

But with the way that Xiao Mu was acting, it was almost as if it didn’t have a single idea of what the array spirit was talking about.

"It’s not my place to tell you." The array spirit said with a sigh in the end.

Lin Fan couldn’t help narrowing his eyes to look at the array spirit before taking out the token to point it at him. The way that he did this was almost as if he wanted to use the token on the array spirit for something.

It was just that the array spirit shook his head before saying, "You’re still not there yet. Even if you’ve gained more authority, you’re still not at the level of being able to inherit this entire place."

Lin Fan couldn’t help knitting his brows at first, but then he realized that there was something about the way that the array spirit had phrased this.

"You’re saying that I can’t inherit the entire place, but that doesn’t stop me from..."

Even though he didn’t finish his words, Lin Fan had already made it quite clear what he was referring to. He didn’t even need the array spirit to give a slight nod to confirm this.

Since that was the case, then it didn’t seem like it was a problem.

Just inheriting a portion of these pavilions would still be something since it would allow him to improve the authority of the token. As long as the authority of the tokens continued to improve, then it was only a matter of time before he was able to inherit the entire Dao Sect.

Other than this, it confirmed what he had suspected all along.

"It really is like a scavenger hunt..."

Only when the authority is collected in the right order would he be able to inherit the Dao Sect. If they weren’t in the right order, then he would have to slowly gather bits of the authority until he was able to gather everything.

It would mean he would have to take detours until he was able to reach his goal.

At the same time, there were some pavilions that were just too dangerous for him to enter without the proper authority. So it might even put him in danger if he wasn’t able to choose the right order.

But as for asking the array spirit what the right order was...

The look on the array spirit’s face, or rather the way that it turned away after answering this question made it clear that it wasn’t able to say anything. Even if it wanted to, it wouldn’t be able to say much more than what it already knew.

So Lin Fan chose to ask someone else.

But before he could leave, the array spirit did add one thing.

"You’ve already inherited some authority."

It wasn’t clear what the array spirit was referring to, but Lin Fan could guess what it was saying. It was just that he didn’t know which one it had been that had given him this...

"The treasury."

That was the conclusion that he drew in the end.

After all, it was only after Lin Fan came back from that place that all of the spirits in the law enforcement pavilion started treating him differently. So something must have happened in the treasury that he wasn’t aware of.

Lin Fan looked back one last time at the array spirit to see if there was anything else that it would be able to tell him, but it didn’t seem like there was anything that it seemed to know.

Or rather, it was better to say that there was nothing else that it was permitted to tell him.

So in the end, Lin Fan turned to leave with Ye Qing Huan and Xiao Mu.

As he was leaving, he couldn’t help saying, "I’ll be back."

The array spirit looked up at Lin Fan for a moment before a smile appeared on his face.

After all, he knew that Lin Fan wasn’t talking about coming back just to take the authority of this place. Rather, Lin Fan was talking about coming back to take him with them.

It wasn’t as if the array spirit had completely opened his heart to Lin Fan, but it wasn’t as if his heart was completely closed either. That was just how it was when they made a partial contract like this.

When Lin Fan arrived back at the law enforcement pavilion, what he expected happened.

There were more and more spirits that gathered around him.

In fact, it seemed like there were even those that were higher than the elders that were here. This was shown by the clothes that they wore that seemed to be even more complicated than what the elders wore.

If Lin Fan had to guess, he would have guessed that they were most likely great elders of the former Dao Sect.

Even great elders allowed themselves to become a part of the law enforcement pavilion’s array. Or it was better to say that even great elders chose to become part of the array in the end.

From this, one could tell just how hard it was to ascend to become an immortal.

It was no wonder there had been no mention of anyone doing this for the longest time.

But still the great elders did mean something had changed.

They didn’t really interact with Lin Fan, but they did point at the token that he possessed before a stream of light entered it.

Once they were done, it seemed like they lost interest in him.

However, Lin Fan knew that the token had changed because of it.

He had received part of the authority of this law enforcement pavilion all because of them, which had even changed the appearance of the token itself.

When he asked Su Ling what it was, she said, "You have become a candidate for the position of sect master."
