Chapter 270: Chapter 119: 2012, Create the Future
Zhang Shutong was once again riding through the snowy night.
The front of his bike sliced through the frigid wind.
A straight beam of light illuminated the road before him.
He now had a new objective.
His windbreaker was zipped to the top, the visor of his helmet was pulled all the way down, and his tactical gloves were creased from his tight grip on the throttle.
His phone, wedged between his helmet and his cheek, cast a faint glow in the darkness.
"Song passed out again?"
He was on the phone with Du Kang.
"Yeah. He just had me send Gu Qiuyan a picture—the one of you standing next to your motorcycle."
"Just a picture?"
"Just one. I did what he said. You know me, I’m always obedient." Du Kang was the very model of discretion. "Oh, right, Song also said for you to go..."
"Go where?"
"That’s when he passed out."
"I get it."
"Can you guess where he wanted you to go?"
"I can’t guess that, but I know where I need to go now."
"What do you mean? It’s really windy over there, you’re out on the road again... wait, don’t tell me you’re going to find Gu Qiuyan?" Du Kang said in surprise.
"Yeah."
"But doesn’t her family have bodyguards...?"
"Remember the footprints we saw?" Zhang Shutong analyzed rapidly. "That person cased the place at least twice. I used to think bodyguards were enough, but the safest method is actually to get Gu Qiuyan out of the villa. That way, if someone is lying in wait at the villa..."
"...Someone else has prepared a few escape routes outside?" Du Kang had a flash of insight.
"Something like that." Zhang Shutong had already left the city limits. He turned onto a small path, forced to slow down. "The target is ’Gu Qiuyan in the villa.’ The villa, and Gu Qiuyan. Both keywords are essential. But conversely, if one of them is missing, the initiative shifts to our side."
"Oh, so hide her, right? You saying that reminds me of something else. Song said he was wrong!"
"Wrong?"
"Yeah! The first thing he said when he opened his eyes was ’I was wrong.’ I thought he was just apologizing for causing everyone trouble..."
As Du Kang’s familiar chatter continued in his ear, Zhang Shutong reflexively recalled what Song had said that day—that he shouldn’t worry and should just leave the rest to the bodyguards.
’So is that what he meant by ’wrong’?’
"What time is it?" Zhang Shutong asked again.
"A little after ten-ten."
"Okay, I’m almost there. I’ll figure something out when I arrive."
"The problem is, Shutong, you can’t do anything even if you go. Will Gu Qiuyan even agree?"
"She called. She said she wants to come with me."
"Badass!" Du Kang was stunned. "No wonder you’re willing to risk your life for her, Shutong. Running off with you in the middle of the night... that’s one hundred percent—no, one thousand percent trust! A beauty’s favor is a heavy one. Don’t let her down!"
He then asked worriedly, "But even if she trusts you, will her dad?"
"Probably not."
"Then what’s the plan?"
"Do it anyway."
"You’re badass too," Du Kang swore again. "So, does this mean it’s all part of Song’s plan, even though the old man fainted before he could finish?"
"Maybe," Zhang Shutong said in a low voice.
Perhaps it wasn’t just a simple traffic accident. But what the homeroom teacher had figured out before it happened remained a mystery.
"Well, good luck to you two. I’m prepared to pull an all-nighter anyway. I won’t leave his side. The second Song wakes up, I’ll call you. I promise you won’t even miss a cough."
Just then, Zhang Shutong saw a large pothole.
He squeezed the brakes, and the motorcycle instantly slowed down.
"You’re going to go through all this with me?" he asked, surprised.
"What kind of thing is that to say?" Du Kang laughed. "Damn, bro, we’re already in this deep. Who cares if it works or not? What’s there to be afraid of? If I wasn’t stuck here, I’d be right there with you, breaking Gu Qiuyan out myself."
"Okay," Zhang Shutong laughed as well.
The two then hung up.
He didn’t have time to put his phone away. Three more minutes had passed since Du Kang had told him the time.
Five minutes ago, Du Kang had called.
He’d relayed their homeroom teacher’s instructions.
Ten minutes ago, Gu Qiuyan had called.
She’d said she wanted to go with him.
Zhang Shutong had just said on the phone that he would figure something out when he got there.
In truth, he already had a plan.
And it was Gu Qiuyan who had proposed it.
Her resolve was even more intense than his own—
The girl was planning to jump from her window.
Yes, to jump straight down from the second-floor terrace outside her room.
The living room was full of people, so she had no way of getting out through the front door.
Zhang Shutong had been stunned at the time. He had assumed Gu Qiuyan was calling to demand why he was making such a fuss. He’d expected her to be emotional, to yell at him and order him to go home with his tail between his legs. But instead, she said directly:
"I want to go with you!"
Zhang Shutong had asked:
"What will you tell your dad?"
But she had shot back forcefully:
"That’s none of your business!"
So, Zhang Shutong stopped worrying about it. He swerved around the large pothole, twisted the throttle again, and accelerated to full speed.
In that moment, the night wind howled, and the motorcycle’s engine roared to match. He leaned low, his mind racing with how to get Gu Qiuyan out.
It would be difficult for her to jump from the second floor on her own.
’So I have to sneak in first.’
And according to the information the girl had provided, the security outside the villa was weak tonight.
Aside from two bodyguards on night watch in a car, everyone else was inside the villa.
And those two had gone out to buy a late-night snack; it wasn’t time for the shift change yet.
In other words, he was once again racing against time.
He had to take advantage of the window before they returned and get Gu Qiuyan away.
Otherwise, once that car returned, it would be too late—unless he could fly.
Zhang Shutong kept one eye on the time and the other on his remaining fuel.
