Chapter 208: Chapter 138: Resource Allocation! Ning Yu’s Request! The Wasteland’s Harvest
Besides snakes and lizards, the Fighting Club also raised plenty of other creatures, like frogs and mountain rats.
A quick glance revealed a considerable number; they had clearly been catching them for a long time to amass such a collection.
While these creatures couldn’t compare to pheasants, wild ducks, or wild rabbits, they were still a stable source of food and protein in these resource-scarce times.
Just then, Xu Jun approached. His eyes swept over the animals penned in the fences and iron cages, and an odd look appeared on his face.
He knew full well that in this day and age, you couldn’t be picky about food. You should be thanking your lucky stars just to have a full stomach.
But honestly, these creatures were rather unappetizing.
Whether it was the snakes and lizards in the iron cages or the heap of frogs, most people wouldn’t have the guts to take a bite.
It was just like the catch from the traps by the creek; aside from Jia Wen, who was brave enough to eat the frogs, no one else would even touch them.
And don’t even get started on the mountain rats. Just looking at them was enough to give you the creeps.
Except for their shorter tails, smaller bodies, and darker fur, they were practically indistinguishable from sewer rats.
"You guys from the Fighting Club are pretty hardcore," Xu Jun said. "Even with other food around, you still raised these things most people wouldn’t dare to eat. Didn’t you ever think about catching some pheasants or wild rabbits to raise?"
Hearing this, a troubled look crossed Sansan’s face.
"We wanted to raise pheasants and wild rabbits, but those critters are just too hard to catch!"
"We managed to catch a few with traps and arrows by a stroke of luck, but they were either dead on the spot or half-dead. By the time we got them back, all we could do was toss them straight in the pot."
"On the other hand, these snakes, lizards, frogs, and mountain rats are not only easy to catch, but they also reproduce very quickly."
Xu Jun nodded slightly, his gaze landing back on the coiled snakes in the iron cage. "Speaking of which, there must be quite a few venomous ones in there, right? You just grab them like that? Aren’t you afraid of being bitten?"
Sansan smiled and said, "Actually, we didn’t dare touch snakes at first, either. But our old boss once drew a D-Class Recruitment Card and got a snake catcher."
"The guy didn’t have any other skills, but he was an expert at catching snakes and even knew a few things about raising them. It was only under his guidance that we dared to mess with these creatures."
"It’s a shame he died in an accident. Otherwise, our club could have caught a lot more snakes to raise."
"To be honest, even when we first started catching them, we didn’t dare to eat them. We only tried because we got desperate later on. To our surprise, they actually tasted pretty good!"
As he spoke, Sansan turned to Chen Chong, his tone turning slightly fawning.
"Oh, Brother Chong, would you like to try some? I can have someone kill a couple right now and make a soup. It’s delicious!"
"That won’t be necessary." Chen Chong quickly waved a hand to stop him.
It wasn’t that he was against raising snakes and lizards as a reserve food supply. After all, their current situation didn’t allow them to be picky; every food resource had to be utilized.
’But just because we utilize them doesn’t mean I have to eat them.’
They still hadn’t finished the Fear Wolf, Moose, and wild boar meat stockpiled at home. There was no reason to touch these things that made his skin crawl.
He wouldn’t take a single bite unless they were truly at the end of their rope.
’The other members, though, they can eat it if they aren’t afraid...’
Then, with Sansan leading the way, Chen Chong and his group headed upstairs.
If the downstairs of the gymnasium served as the Fighting Club’s livestock and workshop areas, then the upstairs was their supply warehouse.
In a corner, cardboard boxes were stacked in neat piles.
Inside, aside from instant noodles, bread, drinks, and various snacks, there were also piles of daily necessities that couldn’t be produced in the current environment, like laundry detergent, body wash, soap, and paper towels.
The total quantity was substantial—dozens of boxes in all.
Apparently, Fan Kai had the same idea as Chen Chong; knowing how precious these supplies were, he had stockpiled a considerable amount ahead of time.
"Not bad. It’s almost as much as we have piled in our cellar. They even have more of certain things, like these paper towels and laundry detergent. We’ll take some back with us later."
"You got it, Brother Chong..."
After a thorough inventory, all of the Fighting Club’s resources were quickly tallied.
Zhong Fang strode into the lounge, a list clutched in his hand.
"Chen Chong, it’s all tallied. Including the fences, there are thirty-one structures downstairs. The iron cages for the snakes were built by them, so I didn’t include those in the count."
"Among these structures are six D-Class Farmlands, one C-Class Salt Well, two D-Class Fences, two C-Class Wooden Houses, one C-Class Iron Furnace, and one C-Class Craftsman’s Bench..."
"Besides the structures, I’ve also tallied the livestock."
"There are over thirty lizards, large and small. There were too many frogs to count individually, but I’d estimate it’s over a hundred pounds worth. We’ve got more than fifty mountain rats, and about seventy or eighty pounds of fish in the pond."
"As for the snakes, according to the Fighting Club members, there are at least a hundred of them, with dozens of eggs incubating. And you already saw the crops in the farmland for yourself."
"The rest is the supply reserve: over thirty boxes of instant noodles, twenty boxes of bread, more than ten boxes of various drinks and snacks, and fifteen boxes of miscellaneous daily necessities like body wash, paper towels, soap, drying racks, and toothbrushes."
Chen Chong nodded to himself as Zhong Fang read off the items one by one.
The number of resources was far greater than he had anticipated. This trip to the gymnasium had been a huge haul.
Chen Chong already had a rough plan in mind for what to do with all these resources.
More and more people were joining the team, and their numbers were already approaching one hundred.
