White Dragon Lord
Chapter 439: A Red Dragon's Battlefield Anecdotes
Red dragons were the largest of the Chromatic Dragons and possessed the most lethal Dragon Breath attacks, making them the undisputed leaders of their kind.
Pride was carved into the very bones of every red dragon. Their ancestors' glorious battle records were engraved within their dragon inheritance, and they knew that sooner or later, they would stand at the pinnacle of the world just like their forebears.
Sometimes, however, excess confidence was not a good thing. Once they encountered an obstacle or suffered a defeat, they would fall into self-doubt and feel as though the entire world had lost its color.
Dempsey was exactly that kind of proud red dragon, but on the battlefield between the dragons and the Titans, his pride was shattered.
A Titan had broken his body, while a white dragon had crushed his lifelong pride.
Dempsey gasped for breath. A terrifying, bloody hole gaped over his heart, spewing scorching dragon blood. This wound, left by a Spear of the Titans, had nearly pierced his heart and killed him.
At that critical juncture, a white dragon had descended from the sky and saved him, effortlessly crushing his enemy to death. The Titan's dying counterattack could not even breach the white dragon's scale defense. Dempsey was deeply shaken.
If the white dragon had been a High-Tier Legendary Dragon, Dempsey might have found some excuse to console himself. But judging by the dragon's horns, body length, and other physical traits, he could tell its Creature Level was absolutely no higher than twenty-five.
In other words, a white dragon with a Creature Level roughly equal to his own had effortlessly dispatched the enemy that had nearly killed him. His pride pulverized, Dempsey felt as though the sky were falling.
"Can you still fight?" a cold, majestic female voice called out from behind. Dempsey turned his head and saw another white dragon, this one cloaked in the rich, radiant glow of divine power. She was a priestess of the Five-Headed Dragon Queen, and of no low rank.
And she was beautiful.
Oh, those captivating curves, those slender dragon horns...
Felicia raised a brow as she watched the injured red dragon stare fixedly at her, though she was not angry. She had seen that look plenty of times; even many High-Tier Legendary Dragons had tried to court her, but she had rejected them all.
At first, she had thought some of those dragons were quite strong and pleasing to the eye. But the moment she thought of her elder brother's terrifying power and astonishing growth speed, every other dragon seemed pathetically weak, and she lost all interest.
Perhaps in the entire Dragon Race, only the three Dragon King majesties could secure a certain victory over her brother.
That was what Felicia believed. She channeled the divine power within her body.
Greater Healing Spell!
A surge of milky-white energy erupted from the Heart of Radiance and poured into the injured red dragon's wound. The flesh around the gaping hole rapidly regenerated at a visible speed.
Before Dempsey could react, he found that the severe wound that had nearly pierced his heart was already healed.
"You need to rest to fully recover. Leave the battlefield."
"Ah? Oh! Right!"
Dempsey looked up to thank her, only to find that the white dragon priestess was already gone.
Although he was deeply shaken, the situation left no time to sit in a daze. Dempsey looked at the sky. Dragon wings blotted out the sun, and the massive figures of the Titans cast sprawling, menacing shadows across the earth.
Dragon Breath, Spears of the Titans, dragon language magic, and Titan magic intertwined in the heavens. The fierce battle had cleared away the dense clouds that perennially blanketed this layer of the Abyss. Every few seconds, a dragon plummeted from the sky like a kite with a snapped string.
Just moments ago, Dempsey had been among those falling. He looked at his surroundings; the corpses of dragons and Titans were scattered across the earth, and blood pooled in the hollows of the ground. He could not help but recall the white dragon priestess's figure. He had to admit it—she had saved his life.
Dempsey glanced at the battlefield and felt out his own condition. Though his surface wound was healed, he remained incredibly weak.
The principle behind a Healing Spell was to stimulate a creature's innate vitality to rapidly mend wounds. The more severe the injury, the more vitality it consumed.
Therefore, just as Felicia had said, Dempsey needed to retreat from the battlefield and spend some time recovering.
Dempsey flapped his wings and flew at low altitude. He headed toward the rear of the Dragon Legion, an area overseen by an Abomination Rank dragon. There, he could replenish his food and rest in peace.
Slinking away from the battlefield certainly stung Dempsey's pride, but this was no time to act tough.
The journey back passed without incident, and Dempsey safely arrived at the dragons' temporary camp.
The temporary camp was built on a vast plain, its perimeter shielded by a Magic Barrier. This barrier also had a concealment function, making the interior look like a dense expanse of fog to anyone on the outside.
Though the interior could not be seen, Dempsey knew the barrier's edge was guarded by a legion of the Five-Headed Dragon Queen's petitioners. Furthermore, an ancient blue dragon presided over the center of the camp. Any intruder would immediately face a devastating counterattack.
Do not ask how he knew this—he had originally deployed from inside this very barrier.
Dempsey plunged headlong into the fog-like barrier. Finding several petitioners—transformed from draconic souls—watching him, he felt a twinge of embarrassment. He lowered his head to avoid their gazes and flew deeper into the enclosure.
One could not expect free-spirited dragons to transform into disciplined, professional soldiers in a short time. Across the vast, protected plain, dragons lay scattered in a chaotic mess on the ground. They were mostly dragons like Dempsey: wounded, yet unwilling to withdraw from the war.
They still wanted to exact their revenge on the Titans, though a small minority were simply lingering to freeload off the camp's food and drink...
Dempsey flew toward the western side of the camp. That area housed the dependents brought by the dragon lords—servants of the Dragon Race who handled food and logistical supplies for the dragons.
The dependent chief in charge of logistics was a brutal two-headed ogre at the High-Tier Legendary Level. On its very first day, it had beaten three troublemaking High-Tier Legendary Dragons to the ground. After that, the dragons never dared to put on airs or cause any more trouble.
Although these dependents were fierce and did not treat the dragons like masters, the food they provided was genuinely delicious and incredibly varied. Therefore, the dragons harbored a mix of love and hate for these insubordinate servants.
Dempsey landed in front of an ogre wearing a white chef's hat. "Get me a serving of that... that thing! It's red! It has two giant pincers! What's it called again?"
The ogre chef paused, matching the red dragon's description to the food. "Crab, or lobster?"
"Oh! I think it was called some kind of crab!" A red dragon that lived in volcanic regions simply did not understand deep-sea food.
"What variety do you want? We have deep-sea swimming crabs, freshwater brown crabs, Moroccan king crabs..."
Seeing the blank look on the red dragon's face, the ogre realized he had wasted his breath.
"Hold on."
A short while later, the ogre chef brought out samples. The many different crabs left Dempsey dazzled.
These commercial crab breeds, farmed by the murlocs of the Yafeiawei Empire, were not only massive and delicious, but their shells also crunched perfectly when bitten. They suited draconic tastes perfectly, earning the dragons' deep affection; they were wildly fought over the second they came out of the pot.
Truth be told, had he not returned to the camp early due to his injury, Dempsey would not have felt confident about snatching a plate of crabs from the horde's competition, let alone having his pick of them now.
Looking at the food available for selection, he felt for the first time that getting injured might not be a bad thing. Dempsey ordered a little bit of everything.
The ogre chef brought out a massive dining plate several meters in diameter. This plate had been custom-forged by the Afiaiv Kingdom specifically for dragons. The plates, ingredients, and other supplies were all sent to support the battlefield under the name of the White Dragon Lord.
After Dempsey gorged himself, he felt a warm current surge through his body. His weak body recovered slightly.
This was no illusion. Dragons possessed incredibly robust digestive abilities. Their stomach acid could rapidly digest food and convert it into nutrients to replenish bodily drain; the more elemental energy the food contained, the more nutrients it yielded.
And every single food supply from the Yafeiawei Empire was a highly nutritious delicacy, beneficial for a wounded dragon's recovery.
Do not underestimate the power of food. A bountiful meal not only kept the soldiers in high spirits, it also boosted morale and accelerated the recovery speed of the wounded, thereby securing a certain advantage on the battlefield.
On an individual dragon, this advantage was not yet obvious, but added up across thousands upon thousands of dragons, it became a powerful advantage sufficient to change the tide of war.
The Afiaiv Kingdom's provision of logistical supplies for the war was one of the agreements between the White Dragon Lord and the Five-Headed Dragon Queen. As a return on the White Dragon Lord's investment, Tiamat would do her best to guarantee the safety of the three dragons.
Getting drowsy after a full meal was a common biological trait. Dempsey yawned and flew toward the camp's resting area. In truth, no one would stop him even if he slept in the dining area, but when the battle ended and the dragons returned, a stampede accident could easily occur.
Being trampled by ten thousand dragons was not a pleasant feeling, so it was better to obey the rules.
Dempsey found an empty patch of ground in the resting area and sprawled out. Using his wings to cover his head and block the sun, he began to doubt his dragon existence.
The scene of the Spear of the Titans striking the white dragon's scales surfaced in his mind. Sparks flew, yet the white dragon did not even spare the Spear of the Titans a glance, charging right up in an unreasonable posture and plunging its dragon claws into the Titan's chest. A Legendary Rank Level Titan had perished just like that.
It was simply too ferocious for words.
Dempsey racked his brains but could not understand it. Why would a white dragon, a species innately much weaker than a red dragon, be so much stronger than him?
Then he remembered the beautiful Dragon Queen priestess...
Amid his wandering thoughts, Dempsey fell into a half-asleep state, and his body accelerated its recovery.
In his haze, Dempsey heard the roars of the dragons. It was the sound of the battle ending and the dragons returning. He heard excitement in the dragon roars; it seemed the Dragon Race had won today's battle.
The triumphant dragons excitedly rushed into the barrier and swarmed toward the dining area. They scrambled to line up in front of the rows of chefs, ordering dishes and eating, and incidentally eating their plates once they finished.
Yes, these dining plates were disposable. Only the Yafeiawei Empire, with its immense national strength and deep pockets, could sustain such staggering consumption.
Felicia, Elena, and Willy were also among the returning dragons. However, as empire royalty, they had dedicated chefs prepare their food and dined in the High-Tier Legendary Dragon dining area.
As the mainstays of the war, the High-Tier Legendary Dragons charged into the most dangerous battlefields and undertook the most important tasks. Upon returning, the High-Tier Legendary Dragons could also enjoy certain privileges, such as dedicated chefs and a dining area, which avoided the annoyance of waiting in line.
At first, the dragons thought Felicia and Willy were simply well-connected to enter the High-Tier Legendary dining area, but their performance on the battlefield these past few days had made the dragons look at them in a new light.
They surprisingly discovered that even though these two white dragons had not crossed the threshold of an Ancient Dragon, they possessed combat prowess rivaling one—and not even just a newly advanced Ancient Dragon at that.
If Felicia and Willy left the dragons surprised, Elena left them shocked. With the power to reverse life and death, she could step forward to injure enemies or step back to heal her allies. She was simply an all-around Warrior.
Fighting solo, the three dragons rivaled Ancient Dragons; joining forces, they could even turn the tide of a battlefield. Because their lineup was balanced and their cooperation intimate and seamless, they could exert an effect where one plus one was greater than two.
All this left the other dragons full of curiosity about the trio's origins. Upon learning the relationship between the three dragons and that Abomination white dragon renowned across the multiverse, all the unreasonableness became perfectly natural.
Elena finished her food and was about to pull out a magical item enchanted with the Magnificent Mansion spell to rest, when she suddenly received a telepathic message from the Abomination blue dragon overseeing the camp—Wrath of the Firmament.
"Elena, there are quite a few injured kin these days. Could you cast another large-scale life replenishment?"
Wrath of the Firmament's phrasing was very polite. Elena knew this was an acknowledgment of her strength, and also out of respect for her elder brother.
The dragons all knew this war had broken out because the Five-Headed Dragon Queen sneak-attacked the God of the Dark Titans' sanctuary, but very few dragons knew how the Five-Headed Dragon Queen had found the opportunity.
The Abomination Rank blue dragon, Wrath of the Firmament, was one of the insiders. Yet it did not know much either, only knowing that four Abomination Titans had failed to besiege and kill that comet-like, rising Abomination white dragon, and had paid the price of one heavily injured and one crippled.
When this news spread, it shocked the entire Dragon Race. That the White Dragon Lord had such a battle record so soon after stepping into the Abomination Rank truly astonished the dragons.
Most crucially, Wrath of the Firmament knew that the Abomination Rank white dragon and the three dragons in its camp were biological siblings, which meant that white dragon was no older than five hundred years.
This conclusion did not give Wrath of the Firmament shock, but fright, which also made Wrath of the Firmament place more importance on the three dragons.
After all, with such a monstrous brother, the three dragons' genetics could not be too bad. The facts indeed proved this; the three dragons had become the finale trump card of this battlefield, turning the tide of battle several times.
Invited by the Abomination Rank blue dragon, Elena came to the center of the camp. Under the Abomination Rank blue dragon's guard, she rapidly chanted an incantation. Dense life force erupted in all directions with the camp center as the origin, pouring into the injured dragons' bodies to replenish the vitality consumed by healing.
The dragons awakened from their slumber, feeling the weakness in their bodies largely fade. It would not be long before they fully recovered and plunged into battle once again. They looked toward the source of the life force, paying silent tribute to express their respect.
