White Dragon Lord
Chapter 404: Amos Winter's Breath
After several rotations, it was finally the White Dragon Lord's turn to lead the Seventh Army Group onto the battlefield. Under the command of Group Commander Chelmo, the soldiers relieved the previous garrison and took over the defense of the City Wall.
Transformed into his dragon-kin form, the White Dragon Lord walked through the chaotic battlefield. Every demon that dared to attack him instantly turned into an ice sculpture. As casually as if he were strolling through the rear gardens of White Castle, the White Dragon Lord made his way to the top of an arrow tower. Rising a section higher than the City Wall, these towers were equipped with ballistae meant for hunting demonic powerhouses. The soldiers manning the ballistae looked slightly startled to see him come up.
"Lord Overseer."
"At ease. Focus on the enemy."
After stopping the soldiers from turning to salute, the White Dragon Lord conjured an ice chair and sat down beside them. Birmorg, the legendary brigade captain, stood behind him as they observed the Demon Army together.
The sounds of slaughter rang out all around them, mixing the agonizing roars of demons with the pained screams of wounded guards. However, neither the White Dragon Lord nor the legendary powerhouses showed any intention of intervening. It was an ironclad rule of the battlefield: High-Tier combatants did not waste their stamina on low-tier fodder.
Of course, if some blind demon actively sought death, the White Dragon Lord did not mind sending it on its way. Seeing those ice sculptures casually tossed off the ramparts caused the morale of the surrounding soldiers to surge. With the overseer personally holding the line at this section of the City Wall, they at least didn't have to worry about sneak attacks from enemy powerhouses.
But these chaotic, evil demons could not be judged by common sense. A Blade-Arm Demon at the Legendary Rank Level leaped onto the City Wall not far from the White Dragon Lord. Before it could even begin its slaughter, a streak of black Magical Energy struck it. Birmorg, the legendary brigade captain, had made his move.
The White Dragon Lord glanced at the Blade-Arm Demon under Birmorg's assault and realized it was the very same one that had escaped last time. Watching the demon's blade-arms slice through the solid stone battlements like tofu, the White Dragon Lord felt a stir of interest.
However, the Blade-Arm Demon was a fair distance away. Birmorg was already engaging it, and two other legendary powerhouses were rushing over to help. The White Dragon Lord couldn't bring himself to steal his subordinate's prey; after all, whoever made the kill claimed the spoils.Keeping a fraction of his attention on the Blade-Arm Demon's fight, the White Dragon Lord continued to observe the main battlefield. These demons seemed truly endless, surging forward wave after wave. The earth below the City Wall was soaked through with blood, and the slope of corpses had almost piled high enough to form flat ground.
Fortunately, the blood moon had already begun to sink in the west. It would not be long before its crimson energy weakened. Once that happened, the demons would lose some of their frenzy, and their commanders, failing to breach the defenses, would eventually order a retreat.
A sudden change occurred in the battle the White Dragon Lord was watching. Besieged by three legendary powerhouses, the Blade-Arm Demon sensed fatal danger and attempted to break out. The creature was genuinely skilled, managing to smash right through the encirclement of the three legendary powerhouses.
Just as the Blade-Arm Demon was about to successfully leap off the City Wall, the White Dragon Lord, who had been watching all along, struck instantly. A highly condensed arrow of elemental ice energy shot forward.
Master-Tier Magic—Ice Spirit Arrow.
The White Dragon Lord's timing was flawless. In the exact fraction of a second when the Blade-Arm Demon reached the apex of its jump and was about to fall, the Ice Spirit Arrow pierced through its side. The shot struck right in the heart, and the icy power detonated directly inside the demon's body, freezing its internal organs.
The Blade-Arm Demon's joy at escaping was forever frozen in that moment. Its stiffened body began to free-fall. Reacting quickly, Birmorg instantly cast a magical rope to snare the plummeting demon corpse, hauling it back up. The legendary powerhouses who had been besieging the beast exchanged glances, then ran back to their original posts.
Birmorg brought the Blade-Arm Demon's corpse over and set it down in front of the White Dragon Lord.
"Lord Overseer, your spoils."
The White Dragon Lord nodded. From his Dimensional Bag, he pulled a scimitar—seized earlier from an Eight-Armed Snake Demon. Using it, he cleanly severed one of the Blade-Arm Demon's arms and tucked the blade-like limb into his Dimensional Bag.
Pleased to have acquired a nice collectible, the White Dragon Lord lifted his chin toward the rest of the demon's corpse.
"The rest is yours."
Birmorg paused in surprise, then thought about it and stowed the remaining carcass away. After all, three legendary powerhouses had also contributed to slaying this Blade-Arm Demon.
At the same time, Birmorg gained a better understanding of the White Dragon Lord's personality. Although this new overseer was a dragon, he lacked the greedy "I want it all" nature typical of the Dragon Race. He clearly understood the principles of loot distribution and was perfectly willing to abide by them.
The two arms of a Blade-Arm Demon accounted for roughly eighty percent of the corpse's total value. By taking one arm, the White Dragon Lord—who dealt the killing blow—claimed forty percent of the spoils, leaving sixty percent for the remaining three legendary powerhouses. This fell perfectly in line with the principles of loot distribution.
Suddenly, Birmorg pointed at the bulging ground in the distance. Small mounds were swelling up across the blood-soaked earth, as if something was tunneling forward at high speed just beneath the surface.
"Lord Overseer! Burrowing Demons!"
The White Dragon Lord had also spotted the disturbance and instantly went on high alert. Burrowing Demons were incredibly rare High-Tier Demons. They possessed spindle-shaped bodies and razor-sharp claws, allowing them to carve through the earth at high speeds, posing a massive threat to the foundation of the City Wall. Because they hid underground and possessed highly resistant scales, ordinary methods could rarely harm them.
The appearance of so many Burrowing Demons meant the enemy commander was finally making a move against the City Wall. Aisa, the commander of the Mage Corps, hurriedly organized the Mage Corps to begin chanting.
Frost Spell!
A Frost Spell struck the ground in front of the City Wall, freezing the earth solid. This effectively slowed the Burrowing Demons' progress beneath the soil, buying the Mage Corps more time to chant their spells.
The Mage Corps unleashed various magical attacks to slaughter the underground Burrowing Demons. Soon, their numbers dropped drastically. However, a particularly prominent individual suddenly emerged. The mounds of earth this demon pushed up were several times larger than the rest, and the magically frozen soil did not slow its advance in the slightest. It was a Legendary Burrowing Demon.
The White Dragon Lord stood up from his ice chair. While not wasting stamina on low-tier fodder was an ironclad rule of the battlefield, there were always exceptions. A Legendary Burrowing Demon threatened the City Wall too much; on a strategic level, it was entirely worth the White Dragon Lord intervening personally.
Soul Sight!
The White Dragon Lord's gaze pierced the earth, locating the Legendary Burrowing Demon tunneling below. Demonic souls were vastly different from ordinary ones; they were an ominous pale red. The stronger the demon, the brighter the crimson hue. Past powerhouses had studied this and concluded it was related to corruption from the Abyss's demonic energy.
Having found his target, a bizarre spiritual chime echoed out. Soul Magic, which bypassed physical defenses, struck out. The Legendary Burrowing Demon tunneling beneath the earth instantly became a corpse. The White Dragon Lord sat back down. The entire process had taken less than ten seconds.
In the exact moment the Soul Magic activated, Birmorg merely felt a faint chill. Immediately after, he noticed the Legendary Burrowing Demon tunneling beneath the ground had stopped moving.
Glancing at the White Dragon Lord who had just sat back down, a fine layer of cold sweat beaded on Birmorg's forehead. The dragon was right next to him, yet he had not perceived how the White Dragon Lord struck. This meant the White Dragon Lord could kill him effortlessly. After the shock came gladness; serving under a mighty overseer meant that the lives of legendary powerhouses like themselves were far more secure.
The White Dragon Lord continued to hold his post on the City Wall, watching the garrison and the demons slaughter each other.
"Amos! Twelve hundred meters to the left! There is a demonic powerhouse hiding among the ordinary demons!"
Suddenly receiving Osiris Giant of Light's warning, the White Dragon Lord shot to his feet and flew toward the left. But he was a step too late. The High-Tier Legendary Demon hiding among the ordinary demons smashed its fist into the City Wall.
Boom!
An explosive crash rang out as a massive hole was instantly blown through the City Wall. The masonry around the gap immediately began to collapse. Screaming guards tumbled down alongside falling bricks and rubble.
For the first time, a breach appeared in the Alliance garrison's defensive line. The premeditated Demon Army excitedly surged toward the gap.
Damn it!
Roar!
A furious dragon's roar detonated in the sky. Instantly shedding his dragon-kin form, the White Dragon Lord reverted to his true body. The terrifying behemoth flapped his massive wings, crossing a thousand meters in the blink of an eye. The gale-force winds generated by his wings sent both guards and demons on the City Wall stumbling sideways.
The gigantic White Dragon Lord slammed down right at the breach, crushing the demons that had leaped past the defensive line into paste, and successfully plugged the gap in the City Wall.
"You've angered me!"
Seeing the ice-blue Dragon Breath surging toward its face, the High-Tier Legendary Demon hastily triggered Greater Teleportation and vanished from its spot. The demons following beside the High-Tier Legendary Demon commander were entirely out of luck. The terrifying Dragon Breath swept over their bodies, and in the blink of an eye, the living demons were reduced to frozen statues hung with icicles.
The White Dragon Lord maintained his sweeping breath attack. With the City Wall breach as the focal point, a fan-shaped domain of death formed. Every demon within that fan-shaped area was transformed into an ice sculpture radiating frigid mist.
The morale that had plummeted due to the breach skyrocketed immediately. The guards on the City Wall suddenly felt as though their bodies were surging with renewed strength.
Sustaining his breath, the White Dragon Lord turned the Demon Army's intended breakthrough point into a slaughterhouse. His ice-blue Dragon Breath reaped the Demon Army's lives like the grim reaper's scythe; even Legendary Demons could not escape the fate of becoming ice sculptures if they were struck.
Up in the sky, the High-Tier Legendary Demon cast a fearful glance at the white dragon still unleashing his breath below. Instinct told it this breath was not simple; even if it were hit itself, it would likely suffer the same fate. Without looking back, the High-Tier Legendary Demon retreated into the distance.
But the White Dragon Lord had no intention of letting it go so easily. Flapping his wings, he blasted a mouthful of Dragon Breath directly at the City Wall's breach. In the blink of an eye, solid ice sealed the gap, rising even higher than the original City Wall.
Flapping his wings, the White Dragon Lord took to the sky, giving chase to the fleeing High-Tier Legendary Demon.
Even a clay figurine has a temper, let alone a High-Tier Legendary Demon. The High-Tier Legendary Demon turned back and began fighting the White Dragon Lord, but it quickly regretted it. This white dragon's ice magic possessed absurdly destructive power, and his combat awareness was on a crushing level, always able to predict the demon's next move.
Incantations spilled rapidly from the White Dragon Lord's mouth, launching a relentless barrage of magic at his enemy. If not for the extreme agility of the demon's Greater Teleportation, the demon would have been injured long ago.
Suppressed to the point where it could not even raise its head, the High-Tier Legendary Demon decided to retreat, fighting a running battle as the White Dragon Lord relentlessly hunted it down.
Suddenly, the White Dragon Lord sensed the auras of multiple High-Tier Legendary Demons and abruptly halted. The battered High-Tier Legendary Demon used this chance to escape.
Flapping his wings to hover in the sky, the White Dragon Lord stared at a distant group of demonic powerhouses. Without exception, these demons were all at the High-Tier Legend level. Among them were two familiar faces: the former lord of Incineration City, the fire demon Rabmodo Modi, and the former Six-Armed Snake Demon, now an Eight-Armed Snake Demon, Udina.
Aside from his acquaintances, there was the Demonic Flame Tyrant he had just seen yesterday, along with several other renowned demons. The demons hovered in the sky, watching the White Dragon Lord.
The White Dragon Lord glared back at the demons without showing a hint of weakness. Naturally, without the aid of the White Tower, it was absolutely impossible for a single dragon to take on so many demons of the same tier. His confidence came from the numerous companions behind him. The high-tier legendary squad joined by Mage Alan and Odom Mad Axe stood behind the White Dragon Lord, facing down the High-Tier Legendary Demons together.
Ultimately, the two groups of powerhouses failed to break into a fight.
The White Dragon Lord and his companions fell back to the City Wall. By now, the blood moon had almost entirely sunk beneath the horizon, and the demons' frenzy was fading. Many crazed middle and High-Tier Demons regained their sanity and retreated alongside the Master-Tier Demons.
Only a few deeply maddened demons continued to launch suicidal attacks at the City Wall, but they failed to stir up any real trouble. Eventually, the final demon collapsed under the garrison's blades.
In this battle, the Alliance garrison successfully held the line and secured victory.
"Victory!"
Standing atop mountains of corpses, the surviving guards cheered. It was a cry to welcome victory, as well as a way to vent the pent-up emotions in their hearts.
The White Dragon Lord returned to the overseer's main tent of the Seventh Army Group and lay down to rest.
In this battle, oceans of demon fodder died, and their main forces suffered devastating casualties. The Demon Army would not be able to organize a similar offensive in the short term. The war's front lines welcomed a brief period of peace.
Over the next few days, the keen-eared White Dragon Lord kept hearing a certain phrase among the soldiers—Winter's Breath.
It was a nickname coined by busybodies after the White Dragon Lord used his Dragon Breath to plug the breach. The moniker signified that his breath was like the arrival of harsh winter, bringing death and destruction to the enemy.
Hearing it, the White Dragon Lord chuckled and gladly accepted this new nickname. He had already lost count of how many nicknames he had: Lord of the Thousand Islands, Collector, Common Lord of the Murlocs, King of Dragons, Giant Slayer, Titan Ender... Creator of the Frozen Land, World Destroyer, and so on. But Winter's Breath was the most to the White Dragon Lord's liking so far.
"Amos Winter's Breath. Hmm... Sounds pretty good."
