Chapter 395: Chapter 143: The Green Tea Female Side Character in a Period Novel (30)
"Don’t you two see what day it is? The relatives from both our families are all waiting for the banquet to begin."
Chi Yun’er smiled apologetically. "Mom, I’ve been really busy. You’ll understand later. It’s something that will definitely benefit everyone at my work unit."
Jiang Yihua, however, just laughed heartily and apologized to everyone, downing three cups as self-punishment, which earned him a round of cheers.
"Look at our groom-to-be! I’ve never seen him smile like this. He’s grinning from ear to ear..."
"Haha, who knows where the groom-to-be and bride-to-be wandered off to, holding hands. The groom-to-be drank three cups as punishment for being late, so what about the bride-to-be?"
Jiang Yihua smiled resignedly and downed another three cups. "My fiancée has never had alcohol before. I’ll drink in her place."
But the crowd wasn’t about to let him off that easily. It was so rare to see him smile; how could they not take the chance to mess with him a little?
Chi Yun’er’s heart ached for him. How could he drink on an empty stomach?
She quickly stuffed a steamed bun into his hand and whispered, "Brother Hua, eat something to line your stomach first. Don’t upset it..."
The young couple’s interaction made everyone laugh heartily. People commented that Chi Yun’er wasn’t even married yet, but she was already playing the part of the perfect, doting wife.
Chi Yun’er and Jiang Yihua decided to just lie low, letting everyone tease them as they wished. The two of them simply buried their heads in their food, and the moment they finished, they slipped away under the convenient excuse of important business at their work unit. You would have thought they were guests at someone else’s engagement party.
Both sets of parents could only sigh in resignation, knowing that young people today have their own minds. As long as the two of them were in love, that was all that mattered.
Besides, the relatives who came were all part of the parents’ social circle anyway. The "kids" would just be bored staying there, so they let them go.
Jiang Yihua had drunk a fair amount. For one thing, people rarely had the chance to ply him with alcohol. For another, he was truly so happy and didn’t know how to express his elation, so he just kept drinking one cup after another with a silly grin on his face.
A faint blush appeared on his cheeks. He leaned back against the seat of the van, his eyes lazily slanted toward Chi Yun’er. The look in them, as if he wanted to eat her alive, was completely undisguised.
Chi Yun’er’s heart was pounding. She handed him some water. "Brother Hua, you drank a lot. I made you some honey water. Drink some to sober up."
The corners of Jiang Yihua’s lips curved up. He drank the water straight from her hand and then resumed his silent, intense staring, as if he couldn’t bear to even blink.
Each time Chi Yun’er got out of the van to handle business, she would whisper reminders to him: if he felt unwell, he should tell the driver, and he could take a nap until she returned.
Jiang Yihua didn’t say a word. He would just nod, gesture for her to go ahead, and then close his eyes to rest.
This combination of obedient and adorably dazed behavior made Chi Yun’er scream internally. ’I so want to pounce on him!’
The afternoon’s work progressed smoothly. She estimated that one more day would be enough to sort out all the exchange deals.
She had been incredibly busy lately, so she planned to take tomorrow off and get back to work the day after.
When work was over, not a trace of drunkenness remained on Jiang Yihua’s face. Chi Yun’er thought it was a bit of a shame.
’I never realized men could crave women like that... and that women felt the same impulses toward men...’
’I guess most people have that base instinct to tease others, huh?’
Jiang Yihua walked Chi Yun’er home in a perfectly respectable manner. On the crowded street, with people coming and going, the two just stared at each other. They couldn’t say anything too intimate, much less do anything affectionate.
Jiang Yihua clenched his fists, managing only to whisper, "Sweetheart, leave the window open for me tonight..."
Chi Yun’er shivered. ’This is the start of a secret rendezvous! It’s so damn exciting.’
Her face flushed as she gave a small nod. "Eight-thirty."
Jiang Yihua murmured in agreement. He looked at her for several more moments before saying, with great reluctance, "You should hurry home."
