Chapter 127: Chapter 126: The Apocalyptic Big Shot Arrives 3
Through the smart-home peephole, Ji Xiaosong saw three soldiers in dark blue uniforms standing outside her door. The man leading them stood ramrod straight, and the stars on his epaulets glinted coldly under the hallway light.
He had a pair of strikingly handsome almond-shaped eyes, but the slight upward curve at their corners was overshadowed by an inch-long scar on his brow bone, giving him a sharp, intimidating air.
"Gu Lin, leader of the Central Special Action Group."
As the man raised his hand to flash his credentials, the cuff of his sleeve slid back to reveal a dark silver mechanical watch. "The apocalypse warning your father reported has been verified by High Command. I now require Miss Ji’s cooperation for a detailed data-gathering session."
’Gu Lin?’
Ji Xiaosong took a second to process. ’Isn’t this the exact man I’m supposed to find in this lifetime?’
’In this life, I’m supposed to give birth to the reincarnated Medicine God, and the child’s father is Gu Lin.’
"Mr. Gu, please come in."
Ji Xiaosong opened the door and stepped aside.
A holographic 3D map of Chenming City floated in the living room.
Gu Lin tapped an encrypted frequency on the coffee table with a flick of his finger. Instantly, the entire villa was enveloped in an electromagnetic shield.
"Two hours ago, a weather satellite detected an abnormal ion cloud over the Pacific Ocean. Its composition is a perfect match for the acid rain you predicted."
He swiped his hand through the air, pulling up a stream of data. A blood-red countdown timer materialized above their heads.
"In fourteen hours and forty-seven minutes, we will witness the largest mass mutation event in human history. Right now, I need to confirm three things: the maximum capacity of your personal space, the trigger conditions for awakening a superpower, and..."
The man suddenly leaned in closer, and the scent of cool pine mixed with gunpowder washed over her.
"And how did you awaken *two* superpowers?"
"My personal space is approximately 6,000 square kilometers," Ji Xiaosong said, tracing the outline of Chenming City on the coffee table with her finger.
Gu Lin’s mechanical watch suddenly beeped. He pressed the watch face and frowned. "The vital signs monitor indicates you’re lying."
"That was just an estimate. The space is part of my soul, after all. How could I possibly know the exact measurement?"
Ji Xiaosong was still a little nervous. She wasn’t sure about the level of technology in this world, but from what she could see so far, it was quite advanced.
"Tell me more about the superpowers."
Gu Lin popped a floating, simulated acid rain bubble with his pen, deciding not to press her on whether she was telling the truth.
"You said that ordinary people have to run a fever for twenty-four hours after being caught in the rain before they awaken?"
"Yes. Back then, my whole family had a fever. As a soul body, I was practically counting down the seconds, waiting for a miracle."
"Last question. About your superpowers—what’s the story there?"
"The moment I was reborn, it felt like someone planted two seeds in my soul. That’s when I realized I had superpowers: Ice Element and Wood Element."
Everyone in the room immediately grew tense and curious.
Gu Lin was just as curious. "Could you demonstrate your superpowers?"
Ji Xiaosong lowered her gaze to her palm, and the halo from the crystal chandelier seemed to shatter into tiny ice fragments on her eyelashes.
The temperature in the living room plummeted. The white mist of Song Ya’s breath condensed into tiny, hexagonal Ice Crystals in midair.
"This is the Seventh Rank form of the Ice Element."
She lightly tapped the frost congealing on the coffee table. In an instant, the entire mahogany surface was covered in ice-blue veins. "Absolute zero."
Gu Lin’s mechanical watch suddenly flashed a blinding red light as its temperature reading plummeted to -273°C.
Frost bloomed on the collar of his uniform, but his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. "Continue."
The devil’s ivy by the window suddenly began to grow at a frantic pace, its vines twining around the crystal chandelier and lifting Ji Xiaosong into the air.
She floated in midair, Ice Crystal roses blooming from the tips of her hair. "Wood Element, Tenth Rank—Life In All Things."
From the flower buds blooming at the tips of the vines, a pale green liquid condensed.
Ji Youshu suddenly grabbed a compound bow and fired an arrow at one of the buds. The instant the arrowhead touched the liquid, it disintegrated into dust.
"It’s a botanical acid that can corrode alloys."
With a light wave of her finger, the vines gently coiled around the fragments of a bone china cup that Song Ya had accidentally broken earlier.
Ice Crystals enveloped the porcelain shards, reassembling them, while a wood grain pattern seeped into the cracks, mending the cup until it was as good as new.
Gu Lin’s pen suddenly burst into flames on his notepad.
He stared at the flame, which had been frozen solid by an Ice Crystal. "Your energy fluctuations are off the charts. You..."
Before he could finish, Ji Xiaosong suddenly teleported behind him.
An ice blade pressed against his throat as vines simultaneously coiled around the sidearms of the two technicians. "Believe me now?"
The fabric of his uniform collar turned brittle in the extreme cold, shattering like ice.
"Retract!"
With a soft cry from Ji Xiaosong, all the phenomena vanished in an instant.
Thinking it looked a bit plain, she left a few ice chips behind.
As she sank back onto the sofa, a Parasol Leaf from outside the window drifted down, landing perfectly inside the restored teacup.
"Miss Ji, we would be honored to have a patriot like you cooperate with us. Time is short. Would you and your family be willing to relocate to a newly established government base?"
Gu Lin’s expression was grave, having just witnessed Ji Xiaosong’s display of power.
Hearing his invitation, Ji Xiaosong didn’t answer right away. Instead, she looked toward Ji Chengguang and the others.
"Mom, Dad, Brother, do you want to go with me?"
Ji Youshu was already bursting with anticipation. He had wanted to join the army since he was a boy, but his family had never allowed it—after all, there was a fortune to inherit.
’Now, thanks to my sister, I’m getting into a government base. How far can my dream of becoming a soldier be now?’
"I’m in! I’ll go with you, sis. Brother Gu, do you think you guys could let me enlist?"
’It’s the apocalypse. There’s no family fortune to inherit anymore. Mom and Dad can’t possibly stop me from chasing my dream now, can they?’
Ji Chengguang glanced at Song Ya. Seeing no objection from her, he nodded as well.
"A family needs to stick together. Mr. Gu, we agree to go to the government base."
Gu Lin breathed a sigh of relief when they all agreed.
He was on a mission, after all. He had to get them to the base and under protection. A talent like her couldn’t be allowed to slip away.
"Our helicopter is waiting outside. The official name of the installation is Yongfeng Base. It’s located just south of the Chenming City suburbs."
Ji Xiaosong nodded to show she understood.
"You all go on ahead to the helicopter and wait for me. I’m going to put everything in the house into my personal space."
Gu Lin’s head snapped up. ’Absolutely not.’ He couldn’t let Ji Xiaosong out of his sight.
His combat boots crunched over the lingering Ice Crystals on the floor. "According to Article Seventeen of the Special Talent Protection Act..."
He stopped mid-sentence. Right before his eyes, Ji Xiaosong made an entire wine cabinet vanish into her space. The rosewood frame still bore the frost from his own breath a moment ago.
"Why not just say you’re afraid I’ll run, Mr. Gu?"
Her fingertip brushed over an ice chip on his epaulet, and the metal star on his shoulder vanished in an instant.
The man suddenly seized her wrist. A pulse monitor under his tactical glove lit up with a blue glow. "Article Seventeen stipulates that essential personnel may not proceed unaccompanied."
"I never said I was going to run. It’s just that my dad just bought an RV, and my brother bought some weapons for self-defense. I need to take them with us."
Ji Xiaosong sighed in resignation. ’The future father of my child is a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, isn’t he?’
The things she and Song Ya had bought were already tucked away in her space, and the plants among them were already growing.
"Oh. In that case, be quick. I’ll follow you."
Gu Lin had no intention of backing down. He had to keep her within his line of sight.
