Chapter 760: You Thought It Couldn't Get Even More Weird?
For him to be at two very different places at different times is still possible because of his teleportation ability.
But to be at two different places at the same time? That’s something that is not possible unless there’s more than one of them.
The first Mercenary raised his hand, “Hold on… I think I know what’s going on… You said he used Umbramancy didn’t you?”
I nodded, “Yes he did. Oh! Could he be using a Shadow Summon to attack different places at the same time?”
I mean, that’s possible since I literally saw him kind of switch places with one so there’s a chance that he could be teleporting his summons to different places while he’s somewhere else.
The others seem to be warming up to my suggestion as well.
“He could also teleport around couldn’t he? That’s possible.”
“But that would mean he’s a really proficient mage too, why would he be a bandit?”
“Who knows?”
Hmm… Wait a minute…
The last time I used [Screened] on him… I remember Umbramancy in his magic skill list… But was there an Astromancy in there? Because I don’t think I recalled seeing an Astromancy in there…
“Perhaps… He has enchanted artefacts?” I suggested.
“A bandit with expensive artefacts that go around beating other people up and barely taking anything after beating them up… Why would someone even do this?” The Dungeoneer party leader wondered aloud.
I could theorise a few reasons why he was doing this such as the fact that he was an Off-Worlder who was just trying to cause as much trouble as he could for one.
But I could not tell them that, obviously.
Perhaps I should just go and see what Linette’s contact has for me? They might be able to point out potential suspects for me to investigate.
Just as I thought of that, a portal opened up in the air and someone fell through it.
I immediately rushed towards the person, thinking it might be the Off-Worlder and wanted to subdue him before he could do anything.
Just as I was about to grab whoever fell through the portal, I realised that it wasn’t the Off-Worlder.
The only reason I recognised that it wasn’t the Off-Worlder was because the person that fell through the portal was a female Mahun with… Well… Very sizable assets. And that she wasn’t wearing a cloak nor a mask of course.
She looked around, as though trying to figure out where she was until she saw me standing in front of her.
“Umm… May I know where this is?”
“The Guild branch in Sands Border Town,” I answered her.
Her eyes widened, “You need to help us! There’s some weird person who suddenly teleported to us and attacked us!”
I blinked at her, “Is he wearing a mask and cloak?”
“Yes! Wait… How did you know?”
“Where is he?”
“Just north of the town! Outside the gates! Please help my party! He’s going to kill everyone!”
Ok, that’s new…
I didn’t wait for anyone else and rushed outside of the Guild before leaping into the air to start flying in the direction that she had told me.
I’m hoping that he wasn’t going to kill them and it was just an exaggeration on her part… Because if he really was trying to kill people, I dare say he only became this aggressive because I defeated him.
I kept my eye out for anything below that resembled a fight, flying past the edge of the town as a blur in the sky.
It did not take me long to find a fight happening just a short distance away from the town and it definitely did not look like the people involved were holding back.
Angling myself, I changed my direction to dive towards the fight, aiming for the single person that everyone else seemed to be fighting.
As I got closer, I realised that there were at least twenty to thirty people on one side and a good half of them had already been beaten while at least a quarter of the remaining people were barely hanging on.
I quickly spotted my target as he was the only one wearing a cloak and a mask, allowing me to single him out and adjust my dive towards him.
He seemed to notice a shadow below him getting bigger but by the time he realised there was something falling towards him, I had crashed down on top of him, smashing him into the sand.
This time, I made sure to grab hold of him instead of letting go.
I don’t know if this would prevent him from switching places with his Shadow Summon but I had checked with [Screened] earlier to make sure that it was really him.
While he was beneath me, I reached up and pulled off the mask, intending to reveal his face just in case I had to look for him again.
My fingers latched onto the edge of the mask and I was just about to pull it off when a hand grabbed my wrist to stop me.
I tried to power through it anyway but frowned when I realised the hand was actually preventing me from moving.
His strength stats shouldn’t be the same as mine, right? How is he able to hold me?
I heard a chuckle from behind the mask, “Oh snap! Lookie here! It’s the same ol’ face poppin’ up like a glitchy ad on my feed! What’s with your orbit-a-sphere around my personal bio-sphere? Are you vibin’ in stealth mode or just my shadow-buddy?”
I raised my other arm to smash my elbow down on his wrist, forcing him to let go and allowing me to pull at his mask.
But instead of coming off like I thought, the mask remained stuck on his face and refused to move.
“Haha! You think this is gonna slip like some grasped-up noodle in a zero-gravity loop? Nice try chica!”
I quickly deduced that there must be an enchantment on it that prevented it from being taken off.
Without hesitation, I lifted both my arms over head and clasped them together before smashing them down on the mask.
My fists connected with the mask with a loud bang which was followed by a loud crack before the mask split into half and fell apart.
I got a good look at the guy’s face and I found a relatively normal looking guy looking back at me in surprise, as though he was wondering why I was even there.
“Who… Who are you? What are you doing?” The guy asked.
I was just about to point out that I should be the one asking him that question when I noticed something…
He’s speaking normally.
I frowned at him, “Who are you?”
He furrowed his brow, “No, who are you?! Why are you on top of me? Are you trying to rape me?!”
“You were attacking a group of travellers.”
“Ha? What are you talking about? I’m just minding my own business making my dinner here! How did you even get into my house?!”
Huh? Wait…
I stood up, “Does this place look like your house to you?”
He sat up, “What are you talking about? Of course this is my… Wait… Where am I?”
The guy scanned his surroundings and his confusion was evident on his face.
A few of the people he had been attacking came over to me, their weapons still drawn.
“Thank you for the help, miss. We will take it from here.”
I raised my hand, “Hold on. I have some questions I need to ask him.”
The cloaked guy was looking more and more distressed at the moment so I tried to distract him by asking, “Where are you from?”
He turned to me, “What… What’s going on? Are you kidnapping me?”
“Answer the question. I’m trying to help you right now.”
“I… I’m from Sands Border Town.”
“What was the last thing you remembered? Before you saw me on top of you.”
He blinked for a moment, “I… I believe I was cooking some stew… In my house… I heard a noise from behind and when I turned back to see what it was, I was here.”
“What noise did you hear?”
“I’m not sure… Like something was being torn I guess? I don’t know how to describe it.”
“And you don’t remember anything else after that?”
“No… It’s like I blinked and the next thing I see was you trying to strangle me.”
I checked him with [Screened] and I realised that the stats being displayed were completely different now. It wasn’t that Razzle Dazzle idiot but some other guy’s name being reflected on it instead.
My gaze quickly switched to the mask which was undoubtedly the cause of this but even as I did so, I saw the remnants of the mask disintegrating away and leaving nothing behind.
I tried to grab it but almost as if it was an illusion, my fingers slipped through them like they weren’t even there.
It then disappeared into nothingness right before my eyes.
Well fuck… Things just got even more complicated now…
