What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?
Chapter 993: Already After My Life
Great... I’ve barely even made myself a public figure and there was already an assassination attempt on me... What even gives?
If I’m not wrong, the only thing that I should be known for right now was saving this station from a Leviathan... What kind of person would want to kill someone who did that?
Was the fact that I could defeat a Leviathan somehow a threat to them? Was the Leviathan attack somehow arranged by this person who now bears a grudge against me for foiling their plans?
Who would even be capable of controlling or influencing a Leviathan to attack this station?
This assassination attempt really makes no sense... I can’t figure out a motive for this at all.
Like what kind of benefit would my death even bring to whoever planned this? This makes no sense at all.
The only other reason I could think of that could make someone attempt to take me out was just because they wanted the thrill of it.
Actually... Now that I think about it... That sounds quite possible now...
Knowing what kind of people live on this station, there could just be one crazy guy who thought it would be fun to try and kill me and then just go ahead to attempt it just because they can...
We were ushered into the administration tower itself, the speed of how we were brought in made me believe they were already used to these kinds of things happening so they already had an escape route like this prepared.
My only question would be why they didn’t have any protection prepared to prevent the assassination from happening to begin with?
As we were being guided through the corridor, a shadow suddenly leapt towards our group from the roof.
I only noticed them because of my Psionic senses registering a presence moving towards me from above and I looked up in time to see someone with blades jutting out of their arms descending towards me.
They were dressed completely in black to hide their face and they pulled their arm back in preparation to slash at me with that arm blade of theirs.
I did note that they seemed surprised to see me looking up but that did not stop them from carrying out this attempted murder.
I could just kill him with a thought of course but the problem could be easily solved without my powers...
I simply took out my pistol and raised it up to fire three shots at the assassin, nailing him in the chest twice and missing the third bullet since he somehow managed to change the trajectory of his fall midair.
The assassin landed on the floor with a heavy thud and to their credit, the security team did not hesitate as they turned their weapons and immediately fired their weapons, turning the assassin into swiss cheese before they could even try to stand up.
I peeked behind me to see my girls putting their weapons away discreetly.
Looks like if I didn’t shoot down the guy myself, my girls would have intervened instead... But they held back because they saw I was already prepared to shoot him down earlier.
Ok... With the appearance of this second assassin... I can safely rule out the possibility that this was just some random guy trying to kill me for fun.
This was definitely an organised attempt at my life specifically.
And it’s definitely organised by someone high up because they managed to plant someone within the administration tower itself... Could it actually be...
Justin, who was being escorted beside me, scowled at the dead assassin, "To think... He would even go this far..."
I turned to him, "What do you mean?"
He gestured at the assassin even as we started to move away into the deeper parts of the tower, "For someone to be arranged to wait inside as a backup plan in case the sniper did not succeed... There could only be one person I could think of that would be able to make such an arrangement in a short time..."
Well... I already kind of guessed who it might be but I wanted him to say it so I nodded at him to go ahead.
Justin sighed, "The damned overseer of ours... He’s probably hoping that if he could get you killed, the embarrassment of him running away from the fight and your glory of killing the Leviathan will be overshadowed by your death. He would then have an excuse to persecute the entire security team for failing to protect you and then eliminate us and in turn, remove the stain on his reputation as well..."
"You’re really sure it’s him and not just some other higher up?" I asked.
He shook his head, "It’s definitely him... No one else can make such arrangements in such a short amount of time... There was supposed to be a shield in front of the stage as well that should have activated and protected you from that sniper shot. The fact that it didn’t meant it had been sabotaged as well. So this was arranged by someone who would not only have access to the tower but also the equipment that we use without drawing attention... I have to offer my apologies once again for putting you in danger because of this... If you had not been able to avoid that bullet..."
"Let’s just focus on what’s happening now... Is it still a good idea to head to wherever we’re going?"
"What do you mean, Miss Tera?"
"I mean... I assume you guys are following some kind of protocol right now, right? Like... Guiding us to some secure danger room or something? If the person planning this is the overseer... Then they might also have trapped that place just in case all of this still fails, right?"
Justin stared at me for a moment before turning back to his men, "Everyone stop!"
The entire team skidded to a halt, all of us now standing in front of a long corridor that led to an armoured door which I assumed was some kind of safe room designed to protect someone from attacks after an attempted assassination around here.
Justin stared at the door ahead seriously before turning back to look at us, "Everyone, around the corner, move it."
The security team corralled us to the aforementioned corner, moving even the Guild representative with us as we hid around the bend.
Justin then pulled out his personal terminal which he seemed to be using to connect to the security network, before a big red error message appeared on the screen.
He cursed, "Of course... He also made sure to remove my authorisation from the system so I won’t be able to prevent it even if I found out about it..."
"What’s going on?" I asked.
He gritted his teeth, "I tried to access the door controls remotely but it seems I don’t even have access to this part of the security network anymore. No doubt it’s to force me to be there in person and make it seem like it was a server error or something that booted me from the network..."
"Should I try accessing the door controls?" I offered.
He turned to me in surprise, "Can you? Are you also proficient in hacking?"
I said nothing and pulled out my Codex, connecting it to the door’s security systems.
Of course, I made sure that no one else could see the screen where I hacked into the system to access it.
I also acted like I needed a minute longer than I actually did or else they would have realised I managed to hack into their security systems in just a few seconds, which I guess... Spending a minute doing it was also quite impressive too.
I looked up at him, "I’m in. Should I open it?"
He stared at me for a good few seconds as though needing some time to register that I actually managed to hack into their security so easily before he decided it was better not to question it.
He gestured for two of the guys in Power Armour to step in front of the group and they complied immediately, raising their arms to project an energy shield in front of them while facing the safe room.
Once they were in position, Justin turned back to nod at me, "Open it."
I tapped on my screen to remotely open the door.
All of us watched from around the corner as the door slowly unlatched itself before swinging outwards to open up, revealing an empty and secure interior that looked like a rather comfortable sitting room inside.
Huh... I guess I was wrong about them trapping that roo--
The entire room suddenly exploded and even the corridor outside had their walls explode outwards like bombs had been planted behind them.
The shockwave reached us but thankfully, the two Power Armour dudes tanked it for us and we weren’t even scratched.
Well... There’s really no doubt now... That overseer guy really was trying to kill us...
