Chapter 449 - 250: Racial Knight
’She doesn’t want me involved, but she also doesn’t want me to raise him... Is she treating me like some stereotypical deadbeat dad?’
Even in a situation like this, Baron the Racial Knight was still thinking in stereotypes.
Finally, he shook his head and said, "I’m sorry, but I can’t agree with the idea of you using your own child as a tool. If you want to report me, go ahead, madam."
Despite Baron’s refusal, Barbara’s expression didn’t change in the slightest.
She was still smiling, a smile like the Mona Lisa from Da Vinci’s painting.
"In that case, I won’t insist," Barbara said. "But one day, I’ll make you fall for my value."
’Girls from the Old Blood Clan don’t seem mentally sound,’ Baron thought silently. He now understood that Barbara was indeed interested in him, though it was a purely carnal attraction.
A sudden commotion rippled through the crowd, and both of their gazes were unconsciously drawn to it.
It turned out that Catherine, from before, had returned. Still drunk, she clutched a wine glass brimming with red wine, stumbling and bumping her way past the men.
Baron saw her husband, Hamilton, grab her hand, his expression a silent mix of pleading and despair.
The people around them watched with cold eyes, covering their mouths to whisper to one another. One didn’t need to listen closely to know their words were full of ridicule.
’If only there were fewer simps in the world...’ Baron sighed. In truth, he felt more sympathy than anger toward the powerless husband.
He once had a college buddy in a long-distance relationship who was just like that. He and his girlfriend had a fight, so she deliberately found a senior at her school to make him jealous.
Baron and his roommates repeatedly argued that this wasn’t "making him jealous," it was "cheating."
But the buddy stubbornly insisted it was just his girlfriend’s prank. He scrimped and saved for a month to buy a plane ticket, flew over, and bought her a huge bouquet of flowers.
The ending was beautiful—they got back together. But in the end, his return ticket was paid for with money borrowed from Baron and his roommates.
Just as Baron and his roommates predicted, the two were constantly breaking up and getting back together. The girlfriend would incessantly send their friend photos of herself with other men, and he would repeat the cycle of living on instant noodles to save up for another plane ticket. Their entire college career passed in this muddled, dramatic mess.
On graduation day, during a sentimental farewell in the dorm, the girlfriend texted him, proposing they move to a warm, southern city together after graduation—and asking him to reimburse her for plastic surgery.
Of course, the buddy had no money. The cost of her cosmetic procedures wasn’t just a few thousand; it was far beyond what a poor student could ever afford.
According to his explanation, the girl had severe anxiety about her appearance—even though, in his words, she was already gorgeous.
But according to his friends, if she had anxiety about her looks, she could just be anxious. Did she even know he’d been starving himself all through college?
The friends unleashed years of pent-up frustration on him, but he still defended his girlfriend, saying things like, "You guys don’t understand, she’s actually a good person, just too shy," and "She’s actually a very gentle girl who loves me a lot, she just doesn’t know how to show it..."
He would turn red in the face as he argued, "It wasn’t cheating, it was a test! She only got with that senior to make me angry!" "She’s not secondhand goods, she’s my girlfriend! We went to the same high school, from the same hometown... we’ve even met each other’s parents!" "Even though she didn’t want the cat anymore, I kept it and am still raising it..."
For a moment, the dorm room was filled with cheerful laughter.
In the end, it was the dorm’s resident sharp-tongued roommate who delivered the killing blow with a single sentence: "You’ve spent so much money on her. Just tell us, are you still a virgin or not?"
Not long before Baron transmigrated, he received an engagement invitation from that same buddy. The girl in the photo was as beautiful and outstanding as his friend had always said, fair-skinned and pure. Her next to his ordinary-looking friend gave off the vibe of the celestial Weaver Girl choosing the mortal Niu Lang.
(P.S. This is a true story, not fabricated in any way. The real-life counterpart of this friend broke up and got back together with her over seventy times. The latest update is that his wife was suspected of cheating after their marriage, and they eventually had an amicable divorce. He was left with their two daughters.)
’All one can say is that deep affection has always been betrayed by the heartless, and simps are always hooked by teases,’ Baron lamented internally.
Then, Baron saw Catherine push her husband away and walk toward him, her smile cold yet alluring. Behind her, Hamilton stared at Baron with cold, hateful eyes, as if Baron were some cuckolder who had stolen his wife right in front of him.
Although it might have looked that way at the moment, Baron still felt deeply wronged. He had absolutely no intention of seducing a married woman; after all, he wasn’t some kind of homewrecker.
’Hey, my man Hamilton,’ Baron thought, ’I’m not interested in your wife, or anyone else’s wife for that matter. You don’t have to look at me like that. I can understand how you feel, but I think you’d better man up and stop your wife right now.’
Barbara said teasingly, "Have you heard of the Nile crocodiles that live in sub-Saharan Africa? Once they bite their prey, they never let go until they’ve torn off a piece of flesh."
"I know her. Catherine has her sights on you. She won’t stop her assault until she’s stripped you bare."
She added, "But I imagine you’ll reject her quite harshly, since you rejected me as well."
She was still smiling, but this time her smile held the anticipation of watching a great drama unfold. It was still, nonetheless, breathtaking.
Sure enough, just as Barbara had said, Catherine approached Baron and, with a coquettish air, said:
