Chapter 832 – Taming the Fifth Year – Weird Rainbow – 3
The transformation of the terrain was so extensive it seemed like a beast of far superior rank had executed the technique instead of a creature still at Silver 3. It was a demonstration of exactly what it meant to have elemental control twice as refined as Ren’s other beasts, and ten times more than a specialized wolverine of the same rank. The ability to manipulate the environment at a scale that vastly exceeded what the rank would suggest.
Was that really just double the power?
And in the next instant a huge part of the ground turned “inside out”, the molten earth got buried and a new stone stake emerged… The wolverine emerged from the tip of the spike now closest to the wisp, rising from the shadow cast by the structure as if darkness itself were a door it could traverse at will.
It had used the field it created not only as defense but as a transportation network that gave it instant access to any shadow in the area. Every stake was a potential exit point. Every shadow a doorway.
The wisp had no time to react.
One moment it was recovering from its explosive mana expenditure, the next the wolverine was simply there, its compact yet massive form materializing from the shadows with its short range elemental control already in motion.
The wisp tried to escape.
But it was too late.
The wolverine had timed its emergence perfectly, exploiting the moment when the wisp had exhausted its readily usable energy, maintaining intangibility was the max it could do now.
And even spiritual energy had limits. Even wisp couldn’t remain incorporeal indefinitely, nor while channeling other techniques.
The wolverine sprayed the wisp with what some called “blessed water”, a combination of water elemental energy and light that was particularly effective against spirits touched by miasma or demonic energy.
The wisp shrieked, a sound that had no physical source but nonetheless rang through the arena, as the blessed water contacted its form. Steam erupted where water met fire, but the spiritual beast used its last resource and became intangible once again.
And before the spirit could escape, the wolverine enclosed it in a black sphere that materialized around both the wisp and the water like a perfect cage.
It was a combination of earth and darkness, physical structure reinforced with shadow manipulation that sealed light escapes in all directions. The sphere was opaque, absorbing rather than reflecting illumination. From the outside, it appeared as a perfect void hovering above the ground, roughly three meters in diameter.

The sphere was opaque, absorbing rather than reflecting illumination. From the outside, it appeared as a perfect void hovering above the ground, roughly three meters in diameter.
Inside, the wisp was trapped with the blessed water still clinging to its untouchable form, yet unable to teleport or phase through the barrier.
A very weak barrier…
But Ren smiled, he knew the wisp couldn’t remain intangible for more than a few moments, perhaps three or four seconds maximum before its spiritual energy began to disperse dangerously.
And if it remained intangible too long, it would damage itself as the cohesion maintaining its form eroded, eventually disintegrating if pushed beyond the safety limit. It was a fundamental limitation of spiritual beings, their flexibility came at the cost of stability. Push the incorporeal state too far and they simply ceased to be.
It could break the barrier with almost any attack, but as soon as it materialised trying that the water would kill it…
So for a moment, nothing happened visibly externally.
The black sphere containing the wisp remained motionless on the field while everyone watched, waiting for a resolution. The wolverine maintained a vigilant position but didn’t actively attack, simply ensuring the seal remained intact.
It stood guard like a sentinel, eyes fixed on the sphere with unwavering focus.
One second passed.
The crowd held its breath.
Two seconds.
Some spectators leaned forward, trying to discern what was happening inside the opaque barrier.
Three seconds.
Three seconds exactly.
And Liora doubled over in pain.
The bond with the wisp severed abruptly.
Not a controlled retreat but a forced rupture when the spirit couldn’t maintain cohesive form any longer inside the sphere that blocked all its escape methods. The wisp had dispersed completely, spiritual essence fragmenting into particles that could no longer sustain unified consciousness.
It was gone for now. Simply ceased to be.
Ren apologized internally as he watched Liora fall to one knee, her hand pressing against her chest where the pain of the broken bond resonated. The sensation was like having a piece of yourself torn away, a phantom limb that ached with absence. Not physical damage but spiritual trauma that would take hours or a full day to fully recover from.
But he knew Liora was incredibly stubborn. She never surrendered easily even when the situation seemed desperate, never raised the white flag until absolutely forced. It was both her greatest strength and her most annoying flaw…
If he didn’t eliminate her at 100% with a decisive victory, she’d search for any possible way to damage him further or force him to spend more energy in prolonged exchanges that would eventually favor her next beast even if it hurt her more in the process. She’d trade her own pain for tactical advantage without hesitation.
Liora never gave up until absolutely no option remained. It was a characteristic Ren admired but also one that made her somewhat difficult to handle. It necessitated finishing battles against her in ways that left no room for continuation, no opening for her to exploit with sheer determination alone.
Professor Zhao raised his hand after verifying the wisp wouldn’t reconstitute itself. The spiritual particles were too dispersed, lacking the coherent core needed to reform. “Victory: Ren Patinder.”
No applause followed the announcement.
Everyone remained fixated on Ren’s wolverine, their attention captured by something beyond simple victory. The beast stood motionless amidst the forest of earthen stakes it had created, radiating a presence that demanded contemplation.
The Question continued…
The power of the beast seemed to be much more than simply double what the hydra had demonstrated, even considering the rank difference.
It was an observation several more astute spectators were making in low voices while watching the feats the beast had executed with apparent ease. Murmurs rippled through the stands as people tried to reconcile what they’d witnessed with what they understood about beast capabilities.
“That shouldn’t be possible at Silver 3,” one professor muttered.
