Chapter 221. True Love

Cailin froze. She had never imagined that she held such an important place in Chu Feng’s heart.

Tears shimmered in Cailin’s eyes, and her lips trembled slightly. She clearly had many things she wanted to say, yet not a single word came out.

Chu Feng did not force her in any way. He simply waited at an unhurried pace for Cailin’s answer, his gaze remaining gentle as he looked at her.

However, after waiting for quite some time, he still did not hear Cailin say anything. In the end, Chu Feng truly had no way to deal with her and could only sigh helplessly.

Taking Cailin’s wrist again, Chu Feng continued, “I understand what you mean now. So all this time, you have been worrying about these things, haven’t you?

“But have you ever considered that all of this is only your own wishful thinking? It is your idea alone. Have you ever asked me? You never even asked, yet you made the decision for me? Besides, do you think I am truly that shallow? If I wanted novelty, why would I ever lack women? Why would I insist on tying myself to you alone?”

This was not Chu Feng boasting. Therefore, as he said these words, he could not help raising his head and letting out a soft, proud snort. The corner of his mouth curved into an arrogant arc, carrying a trace of pride, a trace of satisfaction, and a trace of certainty that put others at ease.

That was because Chu Feng felt that this was simply laughable.

What was his status?

If he wanted to find a beautiful woman, that would not be a problem at all.

“To be honest with you, I have lived for so many years, yet I have never cared this much about anyone before. You have always felt that your identity is an obstacle, but I have treated you with special care precisely because of that identity.

“I have experienced many things. I am different from ordinary people. To me, there is nothing wrong with your identity at all. On the contrary, it makes you a special existence.

So I will not mind you in the slightest because of your identity. Also, you said earlier that perhaps others would change in the future, but I will not, because I have the strength to ensure it. No matter what you become, I will still be able to suppress you.

Moreover, do you truly think just anyone can make me stay awake in the middle of the night, crouching in the shadows to keep watch? Do you think I would leave a perfectly good bed unused, give up sleep, and stand here talking to you about these useless grand principles? Are you perhaps thinking of everything too simply?”

Chu Feng spoke slowly and calmly, explaining everything to Cailin word by word.

Throughout the entire process, Chu Feng maintained an indifferent manner. He did not show the slightest impatience, nor did he urge her in any way. He simply laid out these principles as though they were having an ordinary conversation.

Cailin’s eyes suddenly widened, filled with shock.

“You mean... you were watching over me all along? Why?” Cailin’s lips parted slightly, and she could not conceal her astonishment.

Chu Feng did not answer, but his silence was already enough to prove everything.

Cailin’s heart skipped a beat, then began pounding wildly, so fast that it seemed as if it might leap out of her throat.

He had been watching over her all along.

From the moment she left the Palace Chambers, he had been watching from the shadows?

At that thought, Cailin could not help feeling an unmistakable shyness rise to the surface.

In order not to wake the servants, Cailin had been barefoot all this time. She had walked barefoot through the Corridor, stood in the Passage and looked back, walked step by step toward the Palace Gate, leaned against the wall and wept...

Had Chu Feng actually seen her in such a wretched state?

But since Chu Feng had already discovered that she intended to sneak out of the palace, why had he not stepped out sooner?

Why had he waited until she was about to leave through the Palace Gate before...

Cailin’s mind once again became a tangled mess. Not only did she fail to understand what Chu Feng truly felt for her, she also failed to understand his intention in doing this.

“If I had not been watching you there, would you still be able to remain here now? In truth, I simply did not want you to make a decision you would regret. There are many ways to solve problems in this world. The only thing that cannot be solved is regret.

When the time came, if you regretted it, what would you use to recover what you had lost? What would you do with the rest of your life? Have you ever seriously thought about these things?

To be honest, you have always remained among the Ancient Royal Clan as the leader of your Heaven-Devouring Python Clan. But perhaps it is precisely because of that status that you have always been confined to that position and that environment. You have no idea how absurd the outside world can be. Once you leave me and also leave the Ancient Royal Clan, then in every direction, there will not be a single place worthy of your trust.

That would be one thing, but the key is that you may also have to face enemies from all sides. When the time comes, do you truly think you will be able to handle them?

Even if you can handle them, are you willing to live every day in such endless fighting and killing? If you can endure even that, why can’t you simply stay by my side and enjoy everything I give you?”

This was another new perspective. Men and women saw things differently, and their views on problems were not the same.

After hearing Chu Feng put it this way, Cailin truly felt as though the darkness before her eyes had given way to light.

Seeing that Cailin remained silent, yet that a slight wavering had appeared in her eyes, Chu Feng had already seen through her heart.

His voice became gentler and gentler, without the slightest hint of reproach. There was only the tenderness of an old father as he explained to Cailin the consequences that every possible choice might bring.

“Now, I have already said everything that should be said, as well as everything that perhaps should not have been said. I have also told you, more or less, what consequences your choice may bring. You must believe me. The life I described just now will certainly be largely similar to the life that awaits you after you make your choice. So now, think it over carefully again. Do you truly want to leave me and leave this place? I can personally promise you here that if, after thinking it through clearly, you still insist on leaving, I will not make any further attempt to stop you.”

The gentleness on Chu Feng’s face vanished in an instant. Replacing it was the sternness he used when facing the court officials.

It was clear that this time, Chu Feng had truly hardened his heart.

It was also clear that this time, Chu Feng truly did not want to waste any more time on this matter.

On one hand, Chu Feng had never been someone who obsessed over such things. On the other hand, Chu Feng had also never been someone who liked forcing others.

Since everything had already been made clear, he had always preferred to respect the choices of others.

Seeing Chu Feng’s stern face and hearing his solemn words, Cailin’s heart tightened. In that instant, it was as if her heart had been seized fiercely by something.

Even her breathing grew hurried.

Cailin could not help glancing at Chu Feng subconsciously. Although she could not clearly see Chu Feng’s eyes, from the side profile of his chiseled, handsome face, she could still tell that Chu Feng was truly angry at this moment.

So if Cailin insisted on leaving now, Chu Feng definitely would not stop her.

But Chu Feng had clearly been watching from the shadows all along. He could clearly have come out earlier to stop her, yet he had insisted on waiting until the very last moment!
