WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE
Chapter 98: ROUTE COLLAPSING
The cratered moon outside the window brightened, and the Arcline answered with a groan that ran through the floor into Sio’s teeth. The carriage was still pitched forward from Maelor’s last pull, loose restraints sliding toward the front wall while the freed children clung to rails, seats and each other. Sterling’s map hovered above Fern’s wrist in broken layers, every few seconds gaining another blinking marker from Broker’s network.
"Those are not all buyers anymore," Sterling said through static. "Three access points just opened inside the old transit network." Fern hooked one arm around a rail and looked toward the lower decks. "Can you identify them?" Sterling enlarged the map, but two markers dissolved into interference. "Not without guessing, and I would rather remain irritating than wrong."
A hard vibration rolled under Rhea’s palm. Her fingers spread against the floor, then snapped toward the rear of the carriage. "The structure is changing." The deep Arcline hum split beneath Sio’s boots, one note directly under him and another farther back, slightly out of time. The cheerful guide above the black core flickered, recovered and raised both hands while pale text unfolded beside it.
〈ROUTE STABILITY BELOW CIVILIAN THRESHOLD〉
〈EMERGENCY SEGMENTATION AVAILABLE〉
Sio stared at it. "Segmentation sounds like a word you should explain before doing it." The guide smiled. "Passenger safety remains our highest priority."
A metallic boom traveled from somewhere behind them, and the floor kicked under Sio’s boots. Fern’s expression tightened. "That was not reassuring."
Rhea pushed herself upright and kept one hand on the wall as they moved. "The rear section is separating from us." Sterling overlaid a rough internal diagram onto the corridor. Old passenger compartments appeared as pale blocks, but modern Organization walls cut across several of them. A cluster of prisoner markers sat three sections behind their position.
"Organization is moving people into the rear cars," Sterling said. "If the Arcline splits, that section can take a different branch." Sio looked at the map, then toward the corridor where red Organization lights were already flashing. "So the safety system is helping them kidnap people more efficiently." The guide bowed. "Route correction in progress." Sio pointed at it. "I was not asking you."
Fern moved first. "Caspian, with me. We keep Eclipse off the Index long enough for Sterling to pull what he can. Rhea, find the prisoners. Angle opens anything between her and them. Sio, get people across whatever breaks."
Sio touched the tender skin beneath his Scar. "That last one sounded suspiciously difficult." Fern was already moving. "Then complain while doing it."
The lower corridor had changed since they left it. Gravity pulled at a shallow angle now, enough that every step wanted to slide toward the outer wall. Rhea adjusted without looking down, fingertips grazing the panels while Angle stayed close enough to catch the children who followed them. Gumm wrapped around Sio’s shoulders and kept one hand stretched to the rail whenever the carriage lurched.
They reached the first prisoner section as an Organization guard slammed a modern barrier across the corridor. Angle’s palm hit the center before the lock finished engaging. Heat spread outward in a dull orange circle, and the guard jumped back when the metal bowed toward him. Rhea ducked through the warped opening first, drove her forearm into his chest and shoved him into the wall.
Two more guards waited behind a line of restrained prisoners. Sio’s Scar caught the clean paths between rifles and bodies, but the carriage tilted farther and ruined every simple angle. He opened a short portal against the floor beside the first guard and fixed its exit to the wall behind him. The man’s next step dropped through and came out sideways, throwing him shoulder-first into the panel. Pain pressed behind Sio’s eye, sharp but manageable. Same carriage. Same relation. Keep it small.
Angle ripped open the nearest restraint frame while Rhea pressed both hands to the floor. "More behind us. A lot more." Her ears shifted toward a tremor Sio could not separate from the machine. "And the rear section is moving away already."
Through the window, the other Arcline still held beside them in the neighboring channel. Maelor’s cratered moon hung against its outer platform for a few more seconds before the routes forked and a wall of ancient stone rose between the two transports, swallowing him from sight.
The corridor itself had not changed, but through the Scar the routes underneath it were drifting apart where the ancient coupling joined the sections. A pale seam in the floor widened by the width of a finger, then closed again with a heavy clunk as the guide appeared from the core at Sio’s hip.
〈SEGMENTATION SEQUENCE INITIATED〉
〈PASSENGERS PLEASE REMAIN WITHIN ASSIGNED SECTION〉
The prisoners nearest them began shouting when the doors at the far end closed. A woman slammed both palms against the glass and pointed beyond it. Children were packed into the next compartment with three Organization escorts trying to push them farther back.
Angle’s heat flared. "Open it." Sio looked at the sealed door, then at the drifting routes underneath them. "Working on the part where the floor is trying to leave."
Gumm slid down his arm and planted himself beside the coupling seam. One small hand stuck to Sio’s side of the carriage while another stretched across the line and flattened against the separating section. His body thinned between them as the gap widened by another inch, and the connection lit inside Sio’s Scar as clearly as if Gumm had drawn it there.
He opened a portal beside the children and fixed the exit to the wall behind Rhea. The edge shook hard enough to spit purple sparks, and a warning flashed across his sight.
〈HOST CAPACITY STRAIN RISING〉
"Move!" Rhea shouted as the first child stumbled out beside her. Angle ducked through the opening in the opposite direction, and Rhea followed after shoving the child clear. Angle dragged another child away from an Organization escort and pushed him toward the portal. Sio’s Scar burned as the rear section shifted sideways into another channel, but Gumm’s stretched body gave him something simple to follow: this side, that side, still connected until it was not.
A rifle cracked behind the children. The shot struck beside the portal and sprayed sparks across its purple edge. Sio snapped the opening narrower before the next round could find the same angle. Angle crossed the compartment in two strides and drove his heated palm into the rifle housing. The weapon softened in the guard’s hands, and Rhea caught the man by the vest and threw him into a row of restraint frames.
The coupling boomed again, and cold air hissed through the widening seam beneath Gumm’s stretched body. "Ten seconds," Sterling said through Fern’s comm. Static swallowed whatever followed, then his voice returned sharper. "Maybe less."
Sio tasted blood. Warmth had started beneath his nose again, and the portal rim was pulling sideways across his vision. Three children remained on the rear section along with two adults chained to the floor.
Rhea dropped beside the nearest restraint and struck the locking plate, but it did not move. Angle crouched beside her, heat gathering between his fingers until the metal pin glowed and sagged. "Again." Rhea drove her palm into it, and the softened lock snapped.
The first adult crawled through. Rhea followed him and turned beside Sio, ready for whoever came next. The second adult shoved the three children ahead of him instead of taking the opening himself, and the rear carriage tore farther away while Gumm’s stretched arm snapped free from the far wall and whipped back around Sio’s chest. The portal twisted with it. Sio nearly lost the relation, but the far edge was still fixed to the rear doorway while the near edge clung to the wall beside him. That side. This side. Hold the connection.
The last child crossed as the adult reached the portal. Black tunnel opened between the separating sections. Sio reached through and caught the man’s wrist while Rhea locked both arms around Sio’s waist. Angle braced himself on the rear side, seized the man under the other arm and shoved him toward the opening. The portal hung between two sections no longer sharing the same route, and system text burned across Sio’s vision.
〈RELATIONAL PATH STABILITY FAILING〉
〈HOST CAPACITY EXCEEDED〉
"Push!" Sio shouted through clenched teeth. Angle drove the man through while Rhea dragged Sio backward, and the prisoner came out hard enough to knock Sio and Rhea into the wall. Angle dove after him as the opening buckled. Sio released the Claim. The portal collapsed with a purple snap, and the rear Arcline section vanished into a separate tunnel carrying Organization guards, sealed compartments and prisoners they had not reached.
Sio stayed against the wall with his eyes shut until the pain stopped trying to split his head. Gumm pressed himself against Sio’s cheek and made a low clicking sound. "I know," Sio muttered. "Bad idea."
Rhea was already counting the people around them, and her lips stopped moving halfway through. "We didn’t get everyone." The words sat beneath the Arcline hum while the rescued adult leaned against the wall with one child clinging to his sleeve.
Angle looked toward the black window where the severed rear section had disappeared. His hands were still glowing faintly, but he lowered them. "Then we find where that branch goes."
Fern’s voice cut through the comm, gunfire cracking behind her words. "Index is compromised. Sterling has a partial copy. Eclipse took something before we cut them off." Sterling pushed a file indicator onto the nearest wall display as her transmission broke into static.
LEGACY INDEX RECOVERY: 38%
Sio stared at the number. "That feels aggressively incomplete." Fern answered between two sharp impacts. "It is what we have."
Another tremor passed through the carriage, but this one came from ahead rather than below. The ancient lights changed from white to gold, and the guide reappeared with its smile restored.
〈EMERGENCY ROUTE SELECTED〉
〈NEXT STOP: CIVILIAN SAFE NODE〉
Sterling fell quiet long enough for Sio to notice. Sio wiped the blood from his upper lip and looked at the unfamiliar destination glowing over the corridor. "You know that place?"
"No," Sterling said, and outside the windows the tunnel divided into several illuminated branches. On his map, Broker’s incoming markers split with them, some following the lost rear section while others turned toward Sio’s Arcline. The guide pointed toward the gold-lit route ahead as the first distant lights of an unknown station appeared in the dark.
