WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Chapter 95: CHILDREN OF THE OLD WORLD

The new vibration reached Rhea through the wall before the Arcline guide finished speaking. Her fingers shifted against the pale surface, following something Sio could not feel until the carriage began to lean. A low tone moved through the floor, deeper than the normal hum, and the lights along the corridor changed from white to a soft blue that traveled ahead of them in sequence. The guide lifted one hand. "Next connection approaching."

Fern looked down the ramp they had just opened. "Then we have less time than I’d like." Below them, the lower level stretched beneath the passenger hall in two long rows of sealed doors. The air carried the dry chill of circulated air and the faint metal smell of restraints. Rhea started down first, one hand sliding along the wall while Caspian and Angle followed. Sio came behind them with Gumm curled across his shoulders and the black core warm in his palm.

The fixtures changed as they descended. Handrails ran lower along the walls, small seats folded out beneath wide windows, and shapes of animals and stars had been worked into the old panels at a child’s eye level. A faded projection flickered awake as they passed, filling the corridor with translucent children from species Sio had only recently learned were real. An Elven girl chased a furred boy between the seats while a human child tried to balance on the back of a bench. A small horned child sat cross-legged on the floor, building a tower from glowing blocks. A woman’s hand entered the edge of the recording to straighten the horned child’s collar before withdrawing again, and he immediately bent it crooked.

A modern steel door had been installed through the middle of the old play space. The Elven girl ran through it and vanished, then appeared again when the recording looped.

Rhea stopped beside the door. A narrow viewing slot had been added at adult eye level, and beyond it Sio saw children sitting against both walls with restraint bands around their wrists. Some looked human. Others did not. One had short fur across the cheeks. Another had ears that tapered sharply through tangled hair. A boy near the back kept his hood pulled low enough to hide whatever was underneath it.

Angle’s fingers curled around the edge of the slot. Heat shimmered faintly against the metal before Fern touched his wrist. "Quiet first." She crouched beside the modern lock while Caspian listened near the corridor bend. "We open every room we can, but if this section seals when we hit the connection, we need a route back up."

Sio glanced at the guide. "Any cheerful advice?" The little figure lifted one hand. "Young passengers should remain with their registered guardian during transfer." Sio looked through the slot again. "Yeah. We’re working on that."

Fern opened the panel. The lock gave with a soft click, and the children inside pulled tighter against the walls when the door moved. Rhea entered first with both hands visible and crouched several steps from them, palms open on her knees. A girl near the front stared at Rhea’s ears, then at her face, and the grip she had on the child beside her loosened slightly. "We’re getting you out," Rhea said. "Stay together."

Sio helped remove the first restraint band while Angle softened the locking pins on another. Gumm stretched a thin limb through the bars of a second restraint and pushed the release lever from the inside. The child wearing it blinked at him. Gumm blinked back, stole the loose metal clip and tucked it against Sio’s collar. "Not yours," Sio muttered as he pried it free. The child pressed both lips together, but a small laugh escaped anyway.

Sterling’s voice broke through Fern’s wrist display in a wash of static. "I found something in the Organization layer. Lower deck directory. It doesn’t call these prisoner rooms." His projection struggled into focus above her arm, text breaking whenever the Arcline’s walls thickened around them. "Legacy holding."

Fern glanced from the label to the children. "Legacy of what?" Sterling opened the directory, and several rows of categories appeared, each tied to room numbers and old lineage codes.

Some names Sio recognized from K-17. ELVEN. DWARVEN. BEASTKIN. Others were unfamiliar, represented only by fragments and abbreviated markers. Beside them, modern Organization notes had been added in a different font.

VIABLE TRAIT PRESERVATION

HEREDITARY RESPONSE POTENTIAL

CROSS-LINE COMPATIBILITY

FARER-LINKED INHERITANCE REVIEW

Rhea’s hand stopped on a restraint buckle. Angle looked toward the projection while the heat around his fingers faded. "They erased them from history and kept the bloodlines."

Sterling scrolled. Static hissed through the speaker while another old recording came alive in the corridor behind them. Children laughed as glowing blocks scattered across the floor, their recorded feet passing between the real prisoners now stepping out of the room. A second Organization file opened beneath the lineage categories, its modern lettering replacing the older codes.

PUBLIC STATUS: EXTINCT

CIVILIAN REFERENCE: MYTHIC / UNVERIFIED

INTERNAL LINEAGE RETENTION: REQUIRED

USEFUL EXPRESSION: PRESERVE

Fern’s thumb stopped against the display. "They didn’t preserve people. They preserved traits." One of the freed children stepped into the corridor and stared through a projection as the horned child ran past him. His hand rose halfway toward the image before dropping again.

On the display, PUBLIC STATUS: EXTINCT sat only a few lines above USEFUL EXPRESSION: PRESERVE. Behind those words, the recorded horned child rebuilt his glowing tower after the loop reset, while a modern restraint band lay open on the floor at Sio’s feet.

The Arcline shifted beneath them. Everyone braced as a stronger vibration rolled from the front of the vehicle toward the rear. Rhea’s head turned sharply. "Something is matching our speed."

The guide brightened in Sio’s hand. "Connection alignment in progress." Sterling’s projection flickered beside it. "I’m seeing a handshake between the Arcline core and the Organization overlay. That may be how they update transfers between vehicles or stations." A burst of static swallowed half his next sentence before he came back. "And it just noticed activity in this section."

Modern lights above the sealed doors changed from white to red. A lock engaged somewhere behind them with a heavy clack, then another answered farther down the corridor.

Fern stood. "Get the children moving." Caspian took the front while Angle and Rhea guided the freed group toward the ramp. Sio stayed beside Fern as she pulled more data from the directory, and a new window opened by itself over Sterling’s projection.

Unlike the modern files, its border was silver and thin, built from the same visual language as the ancient guide. Symbols ran around the edge before translating into familiar words, and Sio’s Scar prickled beneath his eye as the first line formed.

LEGACY INDEX SYNCHRONIZATION

LOCAL RESPONSES DETECTED

COMPARING REGISTERED INHERITANCE PATTERNS

Rhea stopped three steps up the ramp. The floor under her palm vibrated once, enough for dust caught in the seam beside her fingers to jump.

EARTHFARER RESPONSE: ACTIVE

STATUS: UNCONTAINED

Rhea’s eyes lifted to the display while her hand remained against the floor. "It knows."

Angle stepped closer, and a pulse of heat rolled from his hand into the rail he was gripping. The silver interface reacted before he could let go.

SUNFARER CANDIDATE: ACTIVE

STATUS: UNCONTAINED

Angle’s hand came off the rail. The patch of metal beneath his palm remained warm enough to blur the light above it. Sterling’s voice returned through static. "Those labels aren’t in the Organization files. Something older is supplying them. Their overlay is only receiving the result."

Fern looked from the silver classification to the modern red lights above the corridor. "And their system can hear it." Angle stared at SUNFARER CANDIDATE. "So now it knows we’re here."

A hard metallic thud traveled through the Arcline from somewhere ahead. The freed children flinched together. Rhea immediately moved between them and the corridor, then pressed her palm to the wall. The black marks from her earlier surge did not return. "Another structure beside us," she said. "Close."

The guide raised both hands with the same pleasant smile it had worn since the station. "Connection established." Darkness beyond the lower-deck windows gave way to pale light, and another immense Arcline transport slid alongside them, its windows holding position instead of flashing past.

The gap between the two machines narrowed until Sio could make out an illuminated passage unfolding between them. Through the opposite windows stood rows of Organization personnel beside empty restraint frames. One officer lifted a modern tablet and watched its screen turn from red to green.

Fern shut the Legacy Index window and pointed toward the ramp. "Move." Sio followed the children upward while the two ancient transports ran side by side through the buried dark. Behind him, the silver interface reopened by itself, and the classifications remained fixed over the Organization directory.

EARTHFARER RESPONSE: ACTIVE / UNCONTAINED

SUNFARER CANDIDATE: ACTIVE / UNCONTAINED

The first connecting door began to open while modern locks engaged behind them one after another. Across the illuminated passage, the Organization officers began moving toward them.
