WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Chapter 100: THE HIDDEN ROUTE

  • Next Chapter

The last platform panel sealed with a soft stone-on-stone scrape, and Safe Node Seven disappeared around them. Warm windows went black. The silver lines beneath Sio’s boots faded until the platform looked like ordinary rock, and water that had been running in neat channels spilled across two grooves in the floor, carrying grit over their edges. The change happened so quickly that Sio could still smell whatever had been simmering in the cooking pot outside, but when he looked back toward the terraces, there was no village left to see.

Mara moved through the dark without raising her voice. "Children below the second terrace. Injured with them. No lamps near the outer wall." A scaled medic folded his tray and vanished behind a panel that had looked like solid stone. The horned boy from the platform gathered the last blankets, then disappeared after him with one bundle dragging against the floor.

Sterling’s broken outline hovered above Fern’s wrist. "Whatever entered the branch is still moving. Small signature. Not another Arcline." Static cut his face in half before it joined again. "Could be a service vehicle. Could be a scout."

Sio shifted the black core in his palm. "Those options have very different levels of annoying." Fern looked toward Mara. "How long until it reaches us?" Mara pressed two fingers to the wall beside the sealed platform. The stone answered with a vibration too faint for Sio to feel. "Less than five minutes."

Rhea was already crouched near her, palm flat to the floor. Her ears angled toward the dark tunnel beyond the hidden wall. "One vehicle. Light. Four people inside, maybe five." She moved her hand a little farther left. "Fast." Mara looked at her once, said nothing about how she knew, and pointed toward a narrow passage between two terraces. "Outer gallery. If they find the platform, they find everyone. If they see nothing and leave, we stay hidden."

Angle rolled one shoulder, heat still faint around his fingers. "And if they don’t leave?" Mara’s eyes moved to him. "Then make sure they cannot report what they found."

The outer gallery smelled of wet stone and old roots. Sio followed Fern through a passage barely wide enough for two people, with Gumm wrapped around his shoulders and Caspian behind him. Rhea came last, keeping her fingertips against the wall. Every few steps, Mara stopped to pull a small lever hidden beneath roots or press a worn section of silver line, and panels shifted somewhere beyond them with muffled thuds.

They reached a slit overlooking the arrival tunnel, where Safe Node Seven looked dead. The Arcline platform had vanished behind a wall of pale rock. Water spilled over the place where the doors had been, roots hung across the old route lights in thick curtains, and broken benches had been rolled into view from hidden recesses. Sio had walked through the platform minutes ago and still had trouble finding it.

He leaned closer to the slit. "You keep fake ruins ready?" Mara kept her eyes on the tunnel. "We keep being alive ready."

A pale light appeared around the bend, and the vehicle that emerged was no larger than one of Sterling’s private cars, though it rode the Arcline channel without wheels. Modern Organization armor covered the front of an older white body underneath. A scanner mast unfolded from the roof as it slowed, sending a thin red line across the cavern walls. Angle’s heat rose beside Sio until Fern touched his forearm. "Not yet."

The service vehicle stopped where the hidden platform should have been. Its side door opened, and four Organization scouts stepped onto the dead-looking stone. None wore heavy armor. They carried compact rifles, lamps and flat black scanners that pulsed whenever they passed over the buried silver lines. Rhea’s fingers pressed harder into the wall. "One stayed inside." Mara whispered, "Driver."

One scout crouched near the water flowing across the old platform and pushed a scanner into it. Another aimed a lamp toward the terraces, but the beam found only collapsed rock and roots. The third walked beneath the gallery where Sio was hiding. His boots scraped grit over stone, close enough that Sio heard the fabric of his coat shift when he turned.

The fourth scout stopped when a soft electronic tone repeated in his hand. He moved toward the hidden platform seam, one slow step at a time, while the red line on the display narrowed. Fern raised two fingers. Caspian shifted his weight, Angle’s hands opened, and the skin beneath Sio’s Scar began to prickle.

The scout was not looking at the door itself. A thin black cable had worked loose beneath the false rubble, probably disturbed when the Arcline arrived. The scanner followed it straight toward the concealed settlement. Sio looked at Fern and pointed downward. She saw it as the scout touched his comm. "Trace found. Possible active..."

Caspian moved his fingers, and the scanner ripped sideways out of the scout’s hand and struck the wall hard enough to crack its screen. The man drew breath to shout, but Sio opened a small portal beside his ankle and fixed the exit against the rock behind him. His next step vanished through one side and came out sideways, folding him onto the ground.

Angle dropped from the gallery and landed between two scouts. He caught the nearest rifle as it rose, heat spreading through the housing just enough for the internal parts to click and seize. Rhea came down behind him and drove her shoulder into the second scout’s ribs while Fern struck the first with the butt of her weapon.

The fourth scout ran for the vehicle, and Mara hissed, "Do not let him reach the driver." Sio’s Scar caught the clean line between the man and the open door. He opened a portal in front of the scout and put the exit against the ruined wall beside Caspian. The man crossed without understanding what had happened and slammed shoulder-first into stone. Caspian caught the rifle as it left his hands and redirected it into the water channel.

Inside the service vehicle, the driver reached for the controls. Rhea slapped both palms against the floor, her head turning toward the vehicle as its hum climbed. "He’s starting it."

Angle crossed the distance at a run and planted one palm against the outer panel. A narrow line of heat sank into the seam beneath the scanner mast until the metal softened. Caspian twisted his hand from across the platform, and the mast tore free and dropped into the water with a burst of sparks. The vehicle lurched forward anyway.

Sio started to widen a portal across the channel, felt the ache sharpen beneath his Scar and stopped. Gumm slid down his arm, tapped twice against Sio’s wrist and pointed toward the vehicle’s side window. Sio followed the gesture. The driver’s hand was moving across a modern control bank mounted over the ancient dashboard.

"Small," Sio muttered. "I can do small."

He opened a portal no wider than Gumm’s shoulders beside the control bank and placed its twin against the wall in front of them. Gumm squeezed through, stretched one thin arm across the dashboard and ripped a glowing control cartridge from its slot. Warning lights flooded the cab. The vehicle coasted several meters before its hum collapsed and it settled crookedly against the side of the channel.

Gumm came back through clutching the cartridge to his chest. Sio took it from him. "You are not keeping the kidnapping-car key." Gumm wrapped both arms around it. Sio pulled once, got nowhere and looked at Fern. "We can negotiate custody later."

The driver shoved his door open and found Rhea waiting. She caught his wrist, turned him into the side of the vehicle and pinned him there while Fern moved among the other scouts, kicking weapons away and binding wrists with the Organization’s own restraints. One man twisted toward his comm, but Mara stepped on it and ground the device beneath her heel.

"Did they transmit?" Fern asked. Sterling’s voice crackled weakly from her wrist. "Not from inside. I’m barely getting through myself." His projection tried to form, failed, then returned as a mouth and one eye. "Their vehicle sent one automatic route-confirmation burst at the branch mouth, before the node swallowed the signal."

Mara’s expression hardened. "Meaning?" Sterling paused as static crawled over his face. "Meaning somebody knows a scout entered this route. They do not know what it found."

The captured scout nearest Fern laughed once through a split lip. "They’ll come looking." Mara crouched in front of him. "People have been saying that here for a very long time."

The man’s smile faded when the false wall behind Mara opened and revealed no settlement, only another narrow stone passage. Residents emerged silently, took the prisoners and disappeared again without showing where they were going. Sio watched the wall close over them until even its seam vanished beneath damp roots.

Mara turned to Fern. "You cannot stay on the outer terraces tonight." Fern’s eyes narrowed. "You think more scouts are coming?" Mara looked toward Sio, then Rhea and Angle. "I think your arrival turned a hidden route into a question. Questions attract people."

Sio rubbed beneath his Scar. "We have noticed." Mara pointed deeper into the cavern, toward a stairway that had not existed when they arrived. Warm light appeared behind it one strip at a time. "Then come see what we hide when hiding the door is no longer enough."

Mara started down first. Behind her, the scaled medic lifted one rescued child, the horned boy took another by the hand, and families disappeared into the terraces in practiced lines while false walls closed over them. Far below the platform, a slow ring of metal against metal answered the opening passage, and the ruins sealed behind Sio beneath stone, roots and darkness.
