Wasteland: I Awakened A Plant System

Chapter 416: New Types Of Zombies

  • Next Chapter

Beside Evelyn, Liora’s body rapidly shifted between sizes. One moment she stood no taller than a child, slipping beneath a sweeping claw. The next, she expanded into a towering giant, her fist crashing toward the zombie like a falling mountain.

BOOM!!

The evolved zombie didn’t retreat. Instead, its body expanded at the exact same moment, meeting her colossal fist head-on.

The instant Liora shrank to regain her speed, the zombie’s massive body compressed as well, matching her movement perfectly.

Every change in size... was answered by an identical adaptation.

Liora’s eyes narrowed.

"...It’s copying my rhythm."

Not far away, Queen Lyra melted into the shadows. Her figure vanished completely as dozens of shadow blades erupted toward the evolved zombie from every direction.

Slash! Slash! Slash!

Yet the zombie didn’t even try to defend itself.

Its six crimson eyes remained fixed upon the darkness itself.

The instant Lyra emerged from a nearby shadow, its claws were already waiting.

Clang!

Lyra’s pupils contracted as she barely blocked the strike.

She disappeared into the shadows once more.

But before she could launch another ambush, the zombie turned and slashed at an empty patch of darkness.

BOOM!

The shadow exploded apart.

Lyra was forced out of hiding, sliding backward across the ground.

Her expression turned solemn.

"...It can see through my shadows."

Not far away, Aurelia moved calmly through the battlefield. Every swing of Space Slash erased dozens of zombies, their bodies splitting apart long before they could reach her. Yet amid the collapsing horde, the enormous Plague Monarch continued advancing. Its bloated body burst open as countless poisonous sacs ruptured, releasing a crimson storm of toxic spikes that blanketed the battlefield.

Aurelia merely stepped through space. The barrage passed harmlessly behind her before another Space Slash severed one of the commander’s massive arms, along with hundreds of zombies gathered around it. The Plague Monarch’s flesh immediately writhed as a new arm regenerated from the torn stump, while fresh poisonous sacs swelled across its body.

Aurelia watched the regeneration without the slightest change in expression.

"...So regeneration is your answer."

Nearby, the Mist King drifted across the battlefield like living silver fog. Dozens of evolved zombies charged directly into the mist, their claws tearing through empty vapor without finding a target. Before they could react, the surrounding fog condensed around them. One after another, their bodies were silently sliced apart before collapsing to the ground.

More zombies rushed forward without hesitation, only to disappear into the ever-expanding mist. No matter how many entered, none ever emerged. Wherever the silver fog drifted, it became a domain where death arrived without warning.

On another side of the battlefield, the Sand King raised a single hand. A massive sandstorm erupted across the plain, swallowing elite zombies by the dozens. Towering hands of compressed sand emerged from the raging storm, crushing commanders and ordinary zombies alike before dragging them beneath the shifting dunes.

The zombies struggled desperately to escape, but the endless desert buried them completely. As the sandstorm swept across the battlefield, everything in its path was ground into dust beneath the Sand King’s overwhelming power.

Yet even they noticed something terrifying. For every zombie they destroyed... the Flesh Tree simply created another.

---

Vikram’s crimson eyes locked onto the newly regenerated Evolution King.

Yet his attention was quickly drawn elsewhere.

Across the battlefield, the united army was gradually being pushed back. The Flesh Tree continued giving birth to new zombies faster than the alliance could destroy them.

Kara remained locked in battle against the Iron Tyrant. Every swing of her gigantic hammer shook the earth, yet the commander’s fortress-like armor endured every blow before answering with overwhelming strength.

Carol’s expression had long since turned solemn. The Nightmare Beast ignored every illusion she created, its six crimson eyes relentlessly tracking her real body no matter where she hid.

Queen Lyra continued exchanging blows with the Blade Mimic. Every shadow ambush was met with a perfectly timed counter, forcing her to abandon one attack after another before she could gain any advantage.

Evelyn’s countless clones surrounded the Blood Reaver, but every assault was met by its blinding speed and razor-sharp claws. Each wound it inflicted restored its own body, preventing Evelyn from overwhelming it through numbers alone.

Liora remained trapped in a relentless struggle against the Bone Sovereign. Bone walls, towering spears, and forests of razor-sharp spikes continuously reshaped the battlefield, forcing her to change size again and again just to keep moving.

However, the Mist King remained untouchable. His body dissolved into endless silver mist as every zombie that entered the fog vanished without a trace.

The Sand King swept across the battlefield like a living desert, burying entire hordes beneath endless waves of sand before crushing them into dust.

Aurelia advanced calmly through the chaos. Every swing of Space Slash erased countless zombies, while even the Plague Monarch’s terrifying regeneration could not withstand her relentless attacks. With a final slash, the enormous commander was severed completely, its body collapsing before it could regenerate again.

Seeing the three of them steadily advancing, Vikram felt a slight sense of relief.

’As long as they’re holding the line... the situation hasn’t been lost.’

At that very moment, the Evolution King observed the battlefield after noticing the satisfaction in Vikram’s eyes.

His gaze swept over the Mist King, the Sand King, and finally Aurelia. He understood why Vikram felt relieved. Those three were steadily reclaiming the battlefield.

A faint smile formed on his lips.

’It’s time to unveil my new toys.’

Vikram’s pupils contracted. His instincts screamed. Something was wrong. Very wrong.

He immediately lowered his stance. "What are you planning...?"

The Evolution King’s smile deepened. "You’ll see."

He raised a hand toward the Crimson Flesh Tree. The massive tree pulsed violently.

THUMP!!

Three enormous flesh cocoons hanging from its highest branches began trembling. Every werewolf instinctively turned toward them. Even the Mist King, the Sand King, and Aurelia felt an unfamiliar pressure.

---

CRACK...

The first cocoon split apart. A tall, slender zombie stepped onto the battlefield. Black mist drifted around its body as flesh shifted between solid and vapor. Its crimson eyes settled upon the Mist King.

Then the Mist King dissolved into endless white mist and surged forward. The zombie merely opened its mouth. A black vortex appeared, violently drawing in the surrounding mist.

The Mist King’s body immediately became unstable. For the first time, his mist form was being torn apart. His pupils narrowed.

The Evolution King’s voice echoed softly. "Every predator is born for a purpose. This one hunts mist."

---

The second cocoon burst open. A gigantic zombie landed with enough force to shake the earth. Compressed black crystal covered its massive frame.

The Sand King grinned. "So... you wish to challenge me?"

His body transformed into a raging sandstorm. The zombie answered with a single stomp.

BOOM!!

A terrifying gravitational force erupted. The swirling sands collapsed inward, compressed into a single point. The Sand King’s flowing body was forced back together. Even his greatest defense had been disrupted.

The Evolution King’s voice rang out again. "I created an evolution to anchor what cannot be held."

---

The final cocoon unfolded. A graceful zombie emerged. It looked almost human. Six translucent crimson blades floated silently around its body.

Aurelia’s expression hardened. Without hesitation, she swung her sword.

Space Slash!

The invisible blade cut across the battlefield. Yet the zombie remained untouched. It shifted ever so slightly, as though slipping between the fractured layers of space.

Aurelia’s eyes widened. It hadn’t blocked the attack. It hadn’t overpowered it. It had simply moved at the exact instant space itself fractured.

The Evolution King turned toward her. "Space itself is merely another obstacle to overcome."

---

Silence swept across the battlefield.

The Mist King, the Sand King, and Aurelia each now faced an opponent born specifically to challenge their greatest strength.

The Evolution King looked back at Vikram. "I never intended to create stronger zombies. I evolved them to counter yours. Every battle you fought... every victory you claimed... became the foundation for these new evolutions."

He extended his hand toward the battlefield. "Now... show me... whether the Werewolf Kings can overcome their own weaknesses."

The three newly evolved zombies moved simultaneously. The Mist King’s silver fog collided with the black vortex. The Sand King’s storm crashed against overwhelming gravity. Aurelia’s shimmering blade met an opponent that danced along the very edge of space.

---

Vikram’s silver eyes swept across the battlefield.

Everywhere he looked, the war had reached a stalemate.

The Mist King had been forced onto the defensive against the zombie that devoured mist. The Sand King could no longer overwhelm the gravity-evolved zombie that restrained his sandstorm. Even Aurelia had been slowed by the space-evolved zombie capable of slipping through the fractured layers of space.

Behind them, more zombies continued emerging from the Crimson Flesh Tree, one after another, without end.

Vikram’s expression grew solemn.

’This cannot continue...’

Even if the united army managed to destroy one zombie, the Flesh Tree would simply create another. Victory through attrition was impossible.

His gaze slowly shifted toward the Crimson Flesh Tree. The gigantic tree continued pulsing like the heart of the entire battlefield, its countless veins stretching across the crater. With every heartbeat, more evolved zombies were born.

From the very beginning, that tree had been his primary objective. But the Evolution King had never given him the opportunity to approach it, forcing him into a relentless battle instead.

Vikram understood that the Evolution King had never been the true obstacle.

The Crimson Flesh Tree was.

As long as it remained standing, the Evolution King would continue to revive, while the zombie army would grow without end. This battle would never end.

At that moment, Vikram made his decision.

Instead of wasting another moment on the Evolution King, he would destroy the source of everything.

The Evolution King noticed the change in Vikram’s eyes. A faint smile appeared on his face.

"So... you’ve finally realized."

Vikram didn’t reply.

Instead, a brilliant emerald light erupted around his body.

"Sync."

"Warrior Treekin."

Countless emerald vines wrapped around both of his arms as two ancient wooden swords condensed within his grasp, their edges gleaming with a metallic silver radiance.

Without another word, Vikram vanished.

The Evolution King immediately noticed the direction of Vikram’s charge. A faint smile lingered on his face, but Vikram never looked back. His silver eyes remained locked on a single target, the Crimson Flesh Tree. Tightening his grip around the twin wooden swords, he accelerated without the slightest hesitation.

Destroying the Evolution King was meaningless. As long as the Flesh Tree stood, he would continue to revive, and the zombie army would never stop growing.

The only way to end this battle... was to destroy the Flesh Tree.
