Chapter 1421: Chapter 604: Alfred’s Report (Part 2)
At this moment, Alfred was already sweating all over, but he knew, he must not show any hesitation or thoughtfulness; otherwise, it would leave Archbishop Vicma with an extremely bad impression.
This is not the Freya Ancient Church District of the Musillon Duchy in Brittania Kingdom, this is the Justice Cathedral!
Vicma could handle Alfred as easily as crushing a small chick!
Fortunately, the first question wasn’t difficult to answer. Alfred pretended to ponder for two seconds before quickly responding: "From what I know, Laine hasn’t planned to support anyone, not from the beginning to the end."
"Really?" Vicma gripped the Command Staff tightly and casually pursued, "Don’t try to brush me off! Our Lord distinguishes truth from falsehood, and you have been in the Church for over twenty years, you know what to do, don’t you?"
"It’s true." Alfred nodded, the blond-haired, blue-eyed Temple Knight Commander spoke earnestly, "Laine is actually not very familiar with these three candidates. If there’s anyone he is most familiar with, it’s the Great Alchemist Geld, but they’ve only met a few times, and during his last visit to Brunswick, he met Bright Academy’s Supreme Dean Odo, which was a mere encounter. As for him and German, they’ve never even met. He came to Brunswick this time solely at the invitation of the Emperor."
"So he is familiar with Geld, then why wouldn’t he support Geld?" the Knight Order Grand Master Hans-Retdorf asked.
"He only intersects with Geld due to the Emperor’s ordinances." Alfred explained briefly, "Laine has been busy; he’s been preparing to reclaim Musillon since the previous year, starting with the Flash Peak Palace in February last year, and it took most of the year to completely reclaim Musillon. Upon returning to his territory, he’s been busy with reforms, then the birth of his firstborn, followed by negotiations to reclaim the Southern Leonais Old Musillon Territory. So where does he have the energy to keep in touch with Geld? This time, he came mainly as a spectator and to enjoy the Winter Festival holiday, though he has a good personal rapport with His Majesty Emperor Carl Franz."
These words made both Vicma and Retdorf nod involuntarily. Indeed, Laine being busy is something they are aware of, and Alfred’s speech was logical and convincing.
Don’t look at the Justice Church having a stance on the Royal Chief Grand Wizard position, but the Justice Church instead wishes to see Laine and Carl having a good rapport, because Vicma also doesn’t want a war to erupt between two human countries. Hence, on this issue, they support Laine being friends with Emperor Carl Franz.
"We understand." Vicma nodded, "Since he’s not planning to get involved in this matter, it is also a good thing."
Alfred breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he had passed this round.
Thinking of this, Alfred couldn’t help feeling deep admiration, marveling at what an incredible character Laine was, because the second question had been rehearsed entirely that day when Laine and himself were in the hot spring together. Now, when facing the Archbishop’s questions, the Temple Knight Commander had his thoughts prepared.
Meanwhile, Alfred was gradually developing new insights.
"I believe many of Luther Hus’ views and opinions are not wrong!" The Temple Knight Commander’s expression was resolute, and he spoke shockingly, "From some perspectives, my thoughts align with his!"
The Grand Tutor Retdorf’s mouth dropped open, this kid! Is he courting death?!
Luther Hus had ranted during the Justice Church Council meeting and was nearly expelled from the Church membership, it was Archbishop Vicma who spared his life! Do you think the Archbishop will spare you again?
"Oh?" Archbishop Vicma’s tone became peculiar, as he reached out to grip the Command Staff, "Some perspectives? Then in other perspectives, your views differ from his?"
"Yes, I think he’s simply too anxious. His idea is to achieve everything in one go, I believe the Church indeed has some issues that we need to address, but we must not proceed as he suggests. According to Hus’ theories, we’d have to expel thousands of clergy members at once, affecting tens of thousands of church personnel, with an impact so broad, it covers my Empire’s four free cities and ten provinces; this is simply absurd..." Alfred slowly conveyed the opinions Laine had previously expressed to him, "So I think Luther Hus’ suggestions have some merit, but we absolutely cannot implement them as he recommends!"
Listening to Alfred’s impassioned remarks made both Vicma and Retdorf’s expressions change.
The Archbishop slowly nodded, for he had privately asked many people about this issue.
Some kept kowtowing, repeatedly pleading, and said nothing.
Some furiously cursed Hus, slandering him as a heretic, believing he had fallen into Chaos.
Others staunchly supported Hus, in turn accusing the Church Council led by Archbishop Vicma, considering themselves the embodiment of justice.
"So, you think our Church always has problems?" Vicma supplemented and asked.
The atmosphere within the Holy Relic Hall instantly became tense once more, as two pairs of eyes were fixed on Alfred.
The atmosphere was exceedingly quiet for a moment.
"There’s no way that can sustain and operate indefinitely." Alfred said seriously, "We must confront problems but not exaggerate them, Luther Hus’ views are indeed radical, yet we cannot assume there are no problems within the Church!"
