Chapter 1384 -589: Kakasong Duchy (Part 3)
“…” Fugen thought that this fable had taken a darker turn and an abrupt twist here, but as wise as he was, he immediately heard the many messages hidden in it.
First, the fable showed that the entire duchy had been under attack from various forces all year round, causing all its inhabitants to live in a state of high alert.
Second, it showed that the duchy had formed a layered defense system with Shepherds as the first line, Peasant Villages as the second, and nearby castles as the third line of defense; this clearly was not something built in a short time.
Lastly, judging from the knights’ tone, the entire duchy was under high-pressure rule and speech control.
Thinking this through, Fugen had a good grasp of things. He slightly curled his lips, his expression solemn: “Angerong, where is Carcassonne Castle located?”
“Once we cross the plateau ahead, we’ll reach Carcassonne Castle. That castle is huge, divided into inner and outer walls and a Main Castle, with a population of around thirty thousand. It was a castle built by the High Elves during their colonization of the Old World, located on the southern side of the Brittania colony, mainly to defend against all possible incursions around the entire Black Mountain Range. After the Elves withdrew, the Brittania people took over here. Ever since the Knight Kingdom was founded, this place has been regarded as the gateway to southern Brittania and a strategic stronghold.” Angerong continued his introduction.
“For a thousand years, this duchy has blocked endless offensives. The people here have forever endured never-ending war, and they take pride in the fact that they can spare Brittania from constant harassment by Green Skins. This duchy rarely takes part in the Knight Kingdom’s Internal Affairs; in general, the Knight Kings believe that as long as the Kakasong people can hold off the threats from the south, they have already fulfilled their duty.” Angerong went on: “So in this duchy, from Knights down to Peasants, almost everyone has received military training, because when faced with large-scale invasions by Green Skins and Beastmen, or even Tiriel people, all inhabitants will take up arms and fight to defend the Kingdom’s frontier.”
“Life for the people here must be very hard.” Fugen mused.
“Things have been much better in recent years. First, Laine’s territory has become prosperous, and along with it the nearby Winford Duchy and Boldro Duchy have grown wealthy too, so the nearby Knights are more inclined to come to Kakasong and guard the frontier together. Besides that, the sheep here have finally found buyers, because the Free People have money to eat mutton, giving Kakasong’s livestock-rich meat industry a vast market.” Angerong bellowed, “Of course, I still prefer eating the mutton I raise myself, it tastes better.”
“Heh~” Fugen thought, so that’s about the limit of your ambitions. The Primarch of the Emperor’s Sons did not say anything more. He signaled the army to speed up, to cross the mountains and try to lodge at Carcassonne Castle tonight.
Glancing at the map, Fugen thought that Carcassonne Castle was indeed very close to the Black Mountain Range. It seemed that no matter how one attacked, they would have to take this castle first before continuing north to threaten all of Brittania.
So that’s how it is—Dukes guarding the kingdom’s gate, is it?
The army accelerated and crossed the Black Mountain Range. Finally, they entered Brittania’s national border. On the boundless alpine meadows, Fugen rode his Pure-blooded Elf Warhorse, while Angerong was mounted on his Horned Eagle Beast.
If nothing unexpected happened, they would soon reach Carcassonne Castle.
But as they gradually descended from the mountain flank of the alpine meadows, approaching the road leading to the castle, they sensed something wrong.
At the foot of the mountain, dense smoke rolled above the treetops from a burning village. The scent of roasted meat and grain drifted over, and the river waters shone red with the blood of the dead.
Hundreds upon hundreds of Beastmen were rampaging across human lands. A group of Minotaurs were using axes to slaughter the villagers; the bodies of a woman and two children were torn apart by Sharp Fangs and claws, and the remaining villagers had taken refuge in the Lake Fairy Temple in the village, preparing for their final resistance.
Crying, screams, and roars echoed without end.
“Beastmen!” Fugen’s face changed slightly. He raised his sword, anger tinging his voice: “Prepare for battle, my soldiers! Let us tear apart these twisted Chaos Mutants!”
“Yes!”
An encounter battle was on the very brink of erupting.
