Chapter 1383: Chapter 89: Kakasong Duchy (2)
"Master, I’m creating an opportunity for you!" Ollica said triumphantly, lowering her voice. "That Head Maid already knows too many secrets. You absolutely can’t let her go, you have to take her down. The secrets of this castle must not be known to outsiders."
"Mm." Laine had no objections to this; indeed, Sylvia knew far too many secrets.
"Master~ failing to take down that Head Maid must’ve built up quite a lot, right?" The Dark Elf spun around and slipped into Laine’s arms, her smile wickedly seductive. "Want me to help you?"
"You little rascal!" Laine lifted his personal Maid and set her on his lap, giving her a light kiss. "Don’t even think about turning the tables on your master!"
...I absolutely have to take her down, dividing line...
Old World, Brittania, Kakasong Duchy.
After spending a lot of time in Tiriel recruiting a new army, Fugen felt the time was about right. He left one company commander of the Ash Legion, Pedro Alvarado, and Lady Kislev Felix behind in Tiriel to continue recruiting, while he himself led a compact elite force of over three hundred men—some of the Ash Legion’s picked Great Swordsmen and Walking Knights, a small detachment of Kislev Winged Cavalry, and a squad of Arabi Guard from the Golden Mage—preparing to head for Brittania.
Traveling with them were the Female Norsca Ingrid, the cheerful Half-Elf Habi, and Fugen’s brother Angerong.
Seeing how bad things were in Tiriel, the Female Barbarian gave up on finding work there. Out of that instinctive Barbarian reverence for the strong, Ingrid took the initiative to ask Fugen if he needed to hire her. Fugen’s attitude was indifferent, so he simply took this Female Barbarian on as a mercenary.
Their group didn’t look large, and they were escorting a lot of goods as well, which attracted more than a few bandits’ covetous gazes along the way. They chose to go straight over the Black Mountain Range, a route infested by Green Skins, Beastmen, and all manner of human bandits, and one that could hardly be called safe—especially since the Broken Nose Tribe had been rampaging all over the western section of the Black Mountain Range lately. When Fugen decided to take the shortcut through the Black Mountain Range, Half-Elf Habi strongly advised against it; the situation along that stretch of mountain road was far too complicated, and he was really sweating over Fugen’s decision.
Yet after this army crossed the Black Mountain Range, not only had their cargo not decreased, it had actually increased by more than a dozen wagons.
The crossing of the Black Mountain Range hadn’t caused any material losses at all; on the contrary, it had raised even more military funds for the Ash Legion.
"Almost there. Once we crest this ridge, the border of Brittania is right on the other side." A five-meter-tall Giant Demon crashed to the ground, its head cleaved in two, its body sliced cleanly into several sections from top to bottom. It uttered the last sound of its life and tumbled off the cliff, sending countless birds screeching into the sky.
Angerong stowed away his beloved pair of Divine Artifacts, the vibranium battleaxes, on his back. He pointed to a stone marker not far away. "Fugen, look—there’s the border stone. Beyond it is Kakasong Duchy."
It was summer; the weather was hot, the sun blazed high, and the clear sky held not a single cloud. Standing on the rugged mountain path of the Black Mountain Range, Fugen gazed ahead. Once they crested this ridge, the other side would be Kakasong Duchy. With the eyesight of a Genetic Primarch, he could even see a flock of sheep grazing on an alpine meadow under the herding of a Shepherd.
"Looks like we’re almost there. There’s a Shepherd down there—is that the Kakasong Shepherd you mentioned on the road?" Fugen’s silver hair streamed in the mountain breeze. Leaning on the power sword Glory, he looked into the distance, and endless heroic fervor rose in his heart.
Everything lost over these ten thousand years, he would recover piece by piece.
"Right, the Kakasong Shepherds." Angerong laughed heartily. "These Shepherds are the first line of warning Kakasong Duchy has against all kinds of incursions. When they encounter an invasion, they immediately report to the Knights in the nearest castle, especially Carcassonne Castle. Duke Hubert sits there in command. Brother, I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the story ’The Green Skins Are Coming’? It’s a very famous parable in Kakasong." 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂
"Let’s hear it." Fugen asked with interest.
"Long ago, there was a young Shepherd, ordered to graze his flock on the high plateau. The days were terribly dull, so he loved to give false reports. One day, bored out of his mind, he shouted from the mountain, ’The Green Skins are coming! The Green Skins are coming!’"
"The nearby Peasants immediately grabbed their weapons and hurried breathlessly to the front, only to find not even a shadow of a Green Skin. The Shepherd lied that he’d mistaken what he saw, and the Peasants could only leave, fuming."
"The second time, the young Shepherd shouted again that the Green Skins were coming. The kind-hearted Peasants once more rushed up to the plateau to fight the Green Skins, only to find again that there were none. The Shepherd lied that the Green Skins had run off, and the Peasants were furious."
"A few days later, the Green Skins really did come. They swarmed over the land, diving into the flock and tearing into the mutton, slaughtering everywhere. The Shepherd was terrified. He shouted with all his might toward the nearby villages, ’The Green Skins are coming! The Green Skins are coming! The Green Skins really are coming!’"
Fugen, a little speechless, picked up the tale: "And this time no one believed him, right?"
"No. This time the Master Knights came. The Knights of Kakasong Duchy formed a Cavalry Lance Array and rushed over, annihilating this roving band of Green Skins to the last." Angerong continued, "And they summarily executed the Shepherd on the spot. The reason was that his random shouting and rumor-mongering had already been reported up to the Duke. Kakasong does not allow anyone to fabricate or spread rumors, and under no circumstances will they ever relax their vigilance."
