Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 127: The Truth Nyra Keeps
The Perimeter Ward had touched Severin’s awareness before Nyra ever reached the upper floor.
Someone had crossed inward through the south gate without a matching key. South side. Inbound. Nothing more.
Severin stopped outside Nyra’s door.
Alicia halted behind his right shoulder. Her silver ears turned toward the stairs, then toward the closed door.
Severin knocked.
The latch moved almost at once.
Nyra stood there in her charcoal road cloak with her shoulder bag still hanging from her shoulder. Her smoke-black hair had picked up a few loose strands from the road, but her balance was steady and her amber-brown eyes were clear.
Her gaze slid past him.
"You brought Alicia."
"To the landing."
Alicia’s tail made a slow sweep behind her calf.
Severin glanced back. "Watch the stairs and the upper landing. Nobody comes up unless I call for them."
"Yes, Master."
Her answer was immediate. The tiny dip of her ears wasn’t.
Nyra’s eyes flicked to the small dip of Alicia’s ears.
The corner of her mouth threatened to move.
Severin looked at her.
"Don’t."
"I didn’t say anything."
"Keep it that way."
That almost made the smile worse. Almost.
Nyra stepped aside.
Severin entered. She shut the door behind him, and the latch caught with a quiet click. The key stayed where it was.
The room hadn’t changed since the last time he’d been inside it. A narrow table stood beneath the west window. The bed filled most of the south wall. The rest was bare floor and the kind of order that came from owning little enough to know where all of it was.
Nyra crossed to the table, slipped the shoulder bag free, and set it beneath the nearest leg. Her utility knife remained sheathed at her waist.
Severin stayed between the door and the bed.
"Tell me what you found."
Nyra turned back to him. "The tannery swells around the 3rd bell after dusk."
"Swells how?"
"Late carts come in before the last crews are gone. More men than the day work needs. Food goes in. Water. Oil." Her tail shifted behind her. "Bedding sometimes."
"You saw it?"
"My source did. Repeatedly."
"Where do the loads go?"
Nyra’s answer came without decoration. "They don’t know."
Severin watched her for another heartbeat.
Her right ear angled outward. "Don’t make that face."
"What face?"
"The one that says you’re waiting for the useful half of the answer."
"I am."
"Then ask the useful question."
Severin ignored the dry edge. "Do they see anyone take the loads below?"
"No. They see the tannery get crowded. They see the extra carts and the support loads. They don’t see a hidden stair, a trapdoor, or a man politely holding open the way down."
That was cleaner.
"Lower receiving?"
Nyra exhaled through her nose. "That’s ours, not theirs. Marienne found food, water, lamp oil, stable costs, the things the tannery shouldn’t need in those amounts. My source gives us the hour when the place is busiest. Put them together and lower receiving makes sense." She paused. "Makes sense isn’t the same as saw it happen."
Good.
Severin had no use for a guess wearing better clothes.
"How many extra men?"
"Enough to notice. Not enough that I’ll give you a number and pretend it’s solid."
"Captives?"
Nyra shook her head. "No count."
"Entrance?"
"Unknown."
"The visible entrance is wrong?"
Her tail stopped.
"I can’t give you that."
"Can’t or won’t?"
Nyra held his gaze. "Can’t. Not yet."
No hesitation. No attempt to make the answer prettier.
The hour mattered, but tonight’s 3rd bell had already passed. Whatever rhythm her source had seen, the next comparable window belonged to tomorrow.
Severin let the silence sit between them.
Nyra’s ears eased back by a fraction.
"Name," he said.
Her eyes narrowed a little. "I’d rather keep it."
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the answer before you turn the question into an order."
Severin didn’t move.
Nyra didn’t look away either, but the line of her shoulders had gone tighter.
"Tell me why I shouldn’t," he said.
That changed something in her face. Not relief. Work.
"Because right now the name buys you nothing." She tapped a finger against her thigh. "You still don’t get a door. You still don’t get a captive count. You still don’t get a man you can point at and say, there, he’s the one running it. What you do get is another person who can be exposed if the wrong mouth hears the name."
"Mine isn’t the wrong mouth."
"No." Her voice lowered. "But you’re the only person here who doesn’t need me to pretend you can’t take it anyway."
Severin waited.
Nyra rubbed her tongue against the inside of her cheek, then went on.
"My sources keep talking because I don’t carry their names farther than I have to. If this one had seen something that changed who you kill, where you send Alicia, whether we pull people out of the manor, or whether waiting until tomorrow gets somebody killed, you’d already know. I wouldn’t bargain with that."
"And if I decide the name matters?"
"You tell me it’s an order." Her ears lowered another fraction. "I answer."
There it was.
Not a refusal. A cost placed in front of him before he chose to pay it.
’Does the name buy me anything tonight?’
Decision Lattice opened in his mind.
The question lost its blur.
Take the name now, and he gained a person whose identity didn’t reveal the hidden route, didn’t change the passed timing window, and didn’t improve tomorrow’s approach. He would also spend part of the reason Nyra’s people kept speaking to her.
Leave it with Nyra, and he kept the hour, the channel, and the right to take the name the instant it became material.
The choice settled.
A brief dip in his CE closed from deeper within before it affected his breathing.
Nyra had been watching him the whole time.
"Well?"
"Keep the name."
Her shoulders loosened. Barely.
Severin stepped closer.
"For now. The moment that name changes someone’s safety, who we hit, or how we move, you tell me before I have to ask."
"I will."
"And if I ask again as an order?"
Nyra’s answer came softer than the others. "I answer."
"Good."
Her tail moved again.
Severin let the name stay where it was.
"The hour."
"3rd bell after dusk." Nyra leaned her hip against the table now, some of the tension leaving her stance. "Under the current schedule, that’s the ugly part. Late carts are still coming in, the last crews haven’t cleared out, and the extra men are already there. Too much movement for a stranger to stand out."
"Tomorrow."
"Tomorrow."
"Anything else you’d put Alicia on?"
Nyra let the question sit before answering.
That mattered more than speed.
"No." She shook her head. "I’ve got other scraps. None I’d risk your people on yet."
Severin gave a short nod. "Then work’s done."
Nyra stared at him.
For the first time since he’d entered, the sharp little line between her brows disappeared.
Her ears tipped forward.
"Finally."
She pushed away from the table and unbuckled the belt at her waist. The sheathed utility knife went onto the tabletop with a dull tap.
Severin’s gaze followed it, then returned to her.
Nyra walked toward him.
"I spent most of today listening to people lie badly," she said. "Then lie better. Then tell me half a truth and hope I’d thank them for the half."
She stopped close enough that the hem of her cloak brushed his boot.
"I don’t want another clever conversation tonight."
"Then stop talking."
Her mouth curved.
"There you are."
Severin drew her in by the waist and kissed her.
Nyra’s breath jumped against his mouth.
"Mmh..."
Then she grabbed the front of his coat and kissed him back with all the restraint she’d spent on the last conversation nowhere to be found.
Severin drew her against him. Her breasts pressed into his chest through the travel shirt; her tail swept behind her legs, quick now.
"Hnh... Severin..."
He pulled back just long enough to drag her cloak from her shoulders. The charcoal cloth landed on the upper west side of the bed.
His mouth went to her jaw.
Nyra tilted her head before he told her to.
"Ah..."
He kissed down her throat, slower than the first kiss, teeth grazing briefly before his lips softened over the place.
Her fingers worked open his coat.
"You told me to stop talking," she murmured.
"You failed."
"Mm... then do something about it."
Severin caught her breast through the shirt and squeezed.
Nyra’s next breath broke in her throat.
"Hah..."
He held her there while she stripped his coat away. It joined his shirt on the dry east side of the bed a moment later.
Then Severin pulled her dark-slate shirt over her head.
Cool room air touched pale cream-ivory skin. Her nipples tightened before his hands reached them.
Her breasts were full and soft enough to fill his palms, heavy on her smaller frame. Severin kneaded them slowly, thumbs passing over the hardening points while her breathing turned uneven under his hands.
"Mmm..."
"What?"
"You know what."
"Say it."
Nyra’s amber-brown eyes stayed on his. "I like your hands on me."
"Better."
His tongue found her left nipple first. He circled it, then drew the stiff point into his mouth.
"Ah... yes..."
Severin rolled it under his tongue, sucked, then drew back just enough to feel the wet point drag against his lower lip. His hand kept working the other breast, squeezing the soft weight until her hips shifted against him.
"Nnh... Severin..."
He moved to the right breast and sucked harder.
"Ah!"
His palm cracked against the full underside of her left breast.
SLAP!
Nyra jolted against him.
"Hah!"
Her eyes flashed down.
Severin lifted his head. "Problem?"
Her breath came faster now. She swallowed.
"No."
"Good."
He cut off whatever she might have added with another kiss.
Nyra melted into the kiss for half a heartbeat, then answered harder, tongue meeting his. Her hands moved over his shoulders and down his chest, impatient now.
"Mmh... hnh..."
