Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 122: Teeth in the Archive
Severin moved his fingers toward the next handling page.
A hard scuff sounded from the corridor to his right.
Alicia’s ears turned before the tannery clerk did. The clerk was closer to the doorway. He leaned out, head and left shoulder crossing the frame.
Something scraped. Cloth tore.
The clerk jerked backward with a strangled curse. Blood spread along the outer side of his left arm. He stumbled north of the doorway, hit the east wall with his shoulder, and slid down it while his right hand clamped over the cut.
Alicia had already shifted her weight.
"Stay down," Severin said to the clerk.
The man at least had enough sense to obey.
A figure crossed the doorway with a short knife tight in the right hand.
Threat Vector caught the committed line in a heartbeat. The blade wasn’t aimed at Severin. The attacker was driving west toward the exposed table, where Marienne still had the contracts and tannery books under her hands.
Severin moved east.
His right hand closed above the attacker’s wrist. His left forearm hit the upper arm before the knife could open away from the attacker’s body. Forward force met Severin and vanished into nothing useful.
He pulled the shoulder south, turned the knife arm away from the table, and folded the attacker with it.
The attacker’s fingers opened under the turn. The knife skittered across the floor below the table edge.
Severin put the attacker face-down on the floor just below the table edge, the right arm folded behind the lower back. His left palm settled below the shoulder and kept the body there.
Footsteps hit the corridor again.
Another figure came through the east doorway.
Severin fixed his intent and opened Command Relay without releasing the attacker under his hands.
’Marienne. Keep the accepted packets and the 2 tannery books clear of the knives. Tressa. Clerk conscious. Knife cut, outer left arm. Care needed.’
Marienne drew the papers closer to her side of the table immediately.
A brief acknowledgment from Tressa came back through the link.
The newcomer closed on Alicia with a compact shape Severin had seen before: right-hand blade, elbow tight, short entry, arm kept closed until the distance disappeared.
"Alicia. Alive."
"Yes, Master."
Her response changed before the attacker reached her.
Severin recognized the immediate tightening. Battle Pulse brought her balance, guard, and timing together.
Then something deeper adjusted. Her stance didn’t copy the attacker. It changed around what she’d already survived. Her ears fixed on the short line, and her weight settled differently over her hips. The response was new even though the knife work wasn’t.
Adaptive Warbody.
Alicia stepped diagonally east before the attacker could cross behind Severin. Her left forearm met the knife wrist and knocked the arm away from the table. Her right hand locked the upper arm, keeping the elbow compressed against the attacker’s own movement.
The attacker tried to force through.
Alicia pivoted and hooked the attacker’s lead leg from the outside.
The wrist turned under her leverage. The attacker’s fingers broke open.
The short knife struck the floor.
CLACK!
Alicia kept the arm while the attacker’s balance vanished. The attacker’s right side hit the clear floor beside her.
THUD!
She dropped her left knee beside the attacker’s upper arm and anchored the shoulder with her right hand. The blade lay closer to the east wall, well outside reach.
"Don’t," she said when the attacker tried to twist. Her breathing was still even. "Master said alive."
The attacker stopped testing the joint.
Across the table, Marienne had pulled the 2 accepted packets back from the knife path without mixing either with the tannery books. She checked the clerk, then returned to the paper under her hand.
Nyra hadn’t drawn her utility knife. The folded scrap was still in her hand, and she’d moved clear of the bodies and blades.
Severin looked down at the attacker under his hands.
"Where were you supposed to fall back if this failed?"
The attacker sucked in a breath through clenched teeth, cheek pressed against the floor.
"Stable loft."
Severin waited.
The attacker gave him nothing else.
"That’s the fallback," the attacker added at last.
Severin looked at Nyra. "Test that answer."
Nyra’s attention narrowed onto the captive.
A moment later, her mouth tightened.
"There’s deliberate deception in it."
"Which part?"
"Can’t tell you."
Severin kept his pressure on the attacker’s upper back.
"We don’t move on the loft."
Nyra nodded. "Works for me."
The other captive said nothing from under Alicia’s control.
Dense black mist rose from beneath his left palm.
It spread over the pinned attacker’s back, swallowed the clothes with the body, and rolled down to the floor around the captive. The captive strained against the hold. Severin didn’t shift.
The mist closed over the captive completely.
[Void Devour successful.]
’Store.’
The black mist remained dense around the captive. The body vanished inside it.
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The mist withdrew from empty floor.
Severin stood and crossed to Alicia’s side.
She still had the other attacker’s right arm pinned. Severin took the free left wrist with his right hand, folded it behind the lower back, and set his left palm against the upper back.
Alicia kept control of the knife arm until Severin had the body locked.
Dense black mist poured from his contact again.
It covered the captive and the clothes in a continuous layer. Alicia released only as the captive disappeared from her grip.
[Void Devour successful.]
The mist stayed closed around the captive until the last outline disappeared.
[Stored in Void Vault.]
Severin returned to the knife below the table edge and closed his right hand around the hilt.
Dense black mist wrapped the short blade.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Absorbed: Short knife]
He kept the mist tight to the blade until the knife disappeared.
[Stored in Void Vault.]
He crossed the clear floor beside Alicia and lifted the remaining knife by its hilt.
Dense black mist covered steel and hilt.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Absorbed: Short knife]
The mist tightened around the weapon and swallowed it whole.
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The records room smelled of tannin, dust, and fresh blood again.
The clerk was pale but conscious. His right hand still pressed the cut. He looked at Severin, then at the places where the 2 attackers had vanished.
"What the hell were they after?"
"I don’t know yet," Severin said.
The clerk swallowed and looked away.
Marienne went back to the records before the smell of blood had left the room. She checked the 2 accepted packets, then matched the daybook against the handling book without changing their order. Nyra kept her folded scrap apart from the tannery papers. Alicia’s ears stayed on the corridor.
Marienne leaned from the west side and turned a handling page toward Severin. "This line is still intact. Nothing shifted across it."
Alicia stayed where she was. 2 fingertips touched the back of Severin’s right forearm for a brief beat.
Marienne’s eyes dropped to the contact.
Alicia withdrew her hand and kept watching the corridor.
Marienne looked back at the page. "The contracts are clean too."
Severin glanced between the entries, then toward the clerk. The bleeding had slowed under direct pressure. He left the wound alone and kept his attention on the room.
By the time 6 full minutes had passed since the last knife vanished, Alicia and Nyra were moving at their normal ease again. Severin was back at the table’s southern edge. Marienne slid the handling book toward him from the west while Nyra faced him across the table with her scrap. Alicia settled exactly 1 step behind his right shoulder, ears still turned toward the east corridor. The clerk hadn’t moved from the east wall north of the doorway; his right hand still pressed the cut.
Severin looked at the open handling book, then at Nyra.
"Nobody goes to that loft."
Nyra’s ears tipped toward him. "Until we know what part of that answer was crooked?"
"Until we know what they actually know."
Marienne left the 2 books open.
"Keep them that way," Severin said.
He turned back to the handling entries.
