Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 114: The Knife under the Invitation
The tollhouse looked too small to deserve this much trouble.
It sat west of the road in a patch of old stone and dead grass, low beneath a sagging roof with a dark loft window above the southern end. The public road ran past its eastern wall. A narrow path bent around the northeast corner and followed the north face to a partly open doorway.
Severin stopped well south of that corner.
Alicia stopped with him.
Her silver ears turned toward the tollhouse first, then the scrub beyond its western side. Nothing moved there. No horse. No lantern. No helpful idiot standing outside with a sign saying murderer.
Severin glanced at her. "Stay here."
"Yes, Master."
He went alone.
Not down the narrow path. He stayed on the public road and walked far enough north to see the approach from another angle. The north doorway remained partly open. The stone edge covered its western side. South of the building, the old yard lay packed flat around another door. A shallow drainage ditch ran along the west side toward thicker scrub. The broken remains of a toll barrier crouched near the southwest corner.
Still no one showed himself.
Good.
Severin returned to Alicia without pretending the empty windows had told him more than they had.
Route Lattice settled over the ground he had actually seen. The north path opened ahead; the south yard and west ditch remained reachable around the building, with the broken barrier holding the southwest corner.
Enough.
Alicia watched his face. "Where does Master want Alicia?"
"Southwest. Keep the south door and the ditch in sight. If the first thing you hear is a shot, hold your ground."
Her ears tipped forward.
"Master wants the person, not whatever they throw away."
"Exactly."
Alicia smiled. "Yes, Master."
She slipped south, using the wall and scrub instead of crossing the north approach. A flash of silver hair vanished behind old stone. Her tail was the last thing Severin saw.
The 2nd bell after dusk had not sounded yet.
He waited.
Wind moved through the grass. Somewhere farther down the road, a cart axle complained and faded south. The tollhouse stayed dark.
Then the bell carried from Greycross.
The first note faded.
A pause.
The 2nd followed.
Severin moved to the road pocket just south of the northeast corner. The tollhouse wall stood between his right hand and anyone watching the north doorway.
He opened that hand.
Dense black mist poured over his fingers.
It swallowed the shape of his palm, thickened, then peeled back around the dark knife from the invitation. The blade settled bare in his right hand. The board and paper stayed where they belonged in the Void Vault.
The mist vanished.
Severin stepped around the corner.
He walked west along the north path alone.
The knife remained visible in his right hand.
He kept an even pace.
The doorway grew larger. Beyond it lay a dark room of old timber and stone.
He crossed on the eastern side of the threshold.
Metal shifted above and south.
A crossbow silhouette rose behind the loft rail.
Threat Vector caught the bolt line before the trigger finished moving.
A short step west was enough.
Severin took it.
TWANG!
The bolt tore through the space his chest had occupied and buried itself in the eastern wooden jamb.
THUNK!
The crossbow vanished from the rail.
Severin was already moving.
Dense black mist rolled over his right hand and swallowed the dark knife before he took his next stride.
A boot struck wood inside the tollhouse.
Then another.
The shooter was running for the south side.
Severin wanted him alive.
Pursuit Drive closed around that want.
The rest of the room lost importance.
He crossed the room fast, but not blindly enough to throw himself through an unknown doorway. A narrow stair dropped beside the southeast wall. The man ahead had reached it first.
The man wore a dark coat over a lean build. Severin didn’t know the face.
That was all he had.
The man hit the lower floor and threw himself through the south door.
Severin followed.
Cold air struck his face as he entered the yard.
The fugitive had several strides on him and was angling southwest, toward the broken barrier and the ditch beyond it.
Then his left hand went inside his coat.
Not for a weapon.
A small folded packet wrapped in oilskin came out with it.
He hurled it west.
"Leave it!" Severin called.
Alicia did.
She came out from the southwest cover on the man’s line instead.
The packet bounced near the drainage ditch.
A black boot came down on the packet before it could slide into the mud.
Severin’s attention cut west.
Smoke-black hair and silver-black wolf ears rose above a charcoal cloak.
Nyra.
She looked down at the packet beneath her boot, then at Severin.
She bent and picked it up by the dry edge.
The fugitive’s head snapped toward her.
The glance cost him another stride.
His right hand snapped to his hip.
A short knife came free.
He didn’t extend it wide. His elbow stayed close, the blade tucked near his body as he used a short entry step before opening the knife arm.
Severin knew the shape, nothing more. The same compact habit from the road fight with the buyer’s men.
Alicia’s stance tightened so cleanly that the playful softness vanished from it. Her right foot slid back, weight centered, eyes fixed on the man’s knife side.
He rushed her.
Alicia stepped diagonally east.
Her left forearm caught his right arm near the elbow and drove it outward. Her right hand seized the back of his coat high at the shoulder.
His own momentum carried past her.
Alicia turned with it.
The man left his feet.
WHUMP!
He hit the packed dirt chest-first.
The short knife jumped from his hand and skidded east.
Alicia went down beside his right shoulder. Her left hand pinned his wrist palm-down. Her right controlled his upper arm before he could roll.
"Hngh—!"
"Stay down." Her ears flattened for a heartbeat as he strained. "Master wants you breathing."
Severin reached them.
The man was conscious. Angry too, judging by the way his left hand clawed at the dirt. Dirt streaked his coat, and a red mark was already rising along his right forearm.
Good.
Severin put his left boot beside the man’s left hip and dropped his right knee into the dirt beside the left shoulder. His right hand took the free left wrist and folded it behind the man’s lower back.
Alicia still had the right. Severin reached across with his left hand and took that wrist from her while she kept control of the upper arm.
"Release."
"Yes, Master."
She let go and shifted to his right.
Severin drew the wrists together behind the man’s back, shifted both into his right hand, and planted his left palm high between shoulder blade and upper back.
The fugitive bucked hard.
He got nowhere.
Dense black mist spilled from beneath Severin’s palm.
The man jerked harder when it touched him.
"What the fuck—"
The mist climbed his shoulders, poured down his sides, and swallowed his clothes with him. It thickened over the body until not a patch of skin or cloth remained visible.
The strain under Severin’s hands vanished with the man.
[Void Devour successful.]
’Store.’
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The black mist thinned across empty dirt.
Severin released Pursuit Drive.
Alicia looked at the place where the man had been, then at the knife lying east of them.
"Master got him."
"I noticed."
Her mouth twitched. "Yes, Master."
Nyra approached from the west with the folded oilskin packet held by a dry corner.
She stopped a few steps away. Her gaze went to the empty dirt between Severin’s hands.
"So it was a kill setup," she said. "Nice of them to settle that part for us."
She held out the packet.
Severin took it without opening it.
Alicia’s right ear tilted toward Nyra.
Severin almost smiled.
Dense black mist curled around the packet in his hand and swallowed it whole.
He crossed to the short knife and picked it up by the handle. Dirt clung along the blade. He left it as it was.
Severin went back through the south door and climbed the narrow stair. The crossbow lay beside the loft rail. Light frame. No mark he recognized from where he stood.
He carried it down. Scratches in old wood weren’t an answer.
Outside, he walked around to the north doorway and pulled the fired bolt from the eastern jamb.
He set the bolt against the crossbow stock and hooked the short knife through the trigger guard.
Dense black mist rolled over the weapons until they disappeared.
The dirt was gone from Alicia’s knee by the time he returned to the south yard. She took her familiar place on his right without needing to be called.
Nyra waited west of them, her bag strap resting on her shoulder, her own utility knife sheathed at her waist.
"You came back," Severin said.
"I did."
"Because of the invitation?"
Nyra gave him a flat look. "Because I chose to come back."
’Good.’
Nyra nodded toward the ditch. "And before you decide that packet means I’ll start jumping every time you point at something, don’t."
"I wasn’t going to."
"Good."
Alicia edged closer on Severin’s right and caught the lower edge of his coat sleeve between her fingers.
She held it only a moment.
Nyra’s gaze dropped to Alicia’s fingers. A wolf ear shifted.
She said nothing.
Severin looked from Alicia to Nyra. Alicia’s fingers slipped from his sleeve.
Nyra adjusted the strap on her shoulder.
"There’s something else," she said.
"What?"
"If this is going any further than work, you hear my terms first."
Alicia went still beside him.
Severin held Nyra’s gaze.
"I’ll hear them. I agree to nothing until I do."
Nyra’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"Where?" Severin asked.
"Not here." Nyra glanced at the tollhouse.
"Greycross."
"Your house?"
"Yes."
Her mouth pulled slightly to one side. "Of course."
"You’ll be heard there."
Nyra watched him for another beat, then nodded.
"All right."
Severin turned toward the public west road.
Alicia moved with him on the right.
Behind them, Nyra followed, and kept her terms to herself all the way back to Greycross.
