Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 91 The Basin
Crown Basin occupied the hollow inside a dead volcano, with five arenas cut into black stone and enough broadcast glass to make privacy feel illegal.
The transport crossed the northern rim shortly after sunrise, giving Damien one clean look at suspended bridges, silver towers and a central pit reaching below the visible light.
’That map promised four arenas, yet somebody found room for a fifth one while Blank was busy trying to crawl through my coat.’
Blank pressed six cold feet against his ribs, refusing the window even when Mina lifted it toward the glass through both hands.
"Your creature has rejected the road, the gate and now the entire mountain, which feels fairly specific," she said, lowering Blank before it tore his lining.
"It also rejects baths, official envelopes and one blue kettle, so the mountain has questionable company," Damien replied, keeping one palm over the shifting lump.
Vivienne studied the arena below through a folded survey sheet, her ash-blond hair tied close enough that the wind found nothing to move.
"The fifth structure is a calibration lane rather than competition ground, according to this revision issued last night," she said, placing one finger over fresh ink.
’Issued after the draft, printed before departure, damn, they really worked hard to make sudden architecture look normal.’
Isolde leaned across the aisle with her red hair braided beneath a plain black collar, then smelled the paper before touching its corner.
"The ink contains volcanic salt from this facility, meaning they printed it here rather than at Halcrest," she said, returning the sheet without interest.
The transport descended toward a receiving court crowded with forty teams, national marshals and officials wearing white coats marked by gold basin rings.
’Forty teams means one hundred sixty students, which gives fate plenty of bodies to rearrange if the mountain starts editing routes.’
Damien stepped onto the stone after Vivienne, feeling pressure gather beneath Verdict’s scabbard while Blank moved higher against his chest.
A registration arch read every team through vertical bands of blue light, posting roles on the public wall before their feet cleared its shadow.
[Team Sterling]
[Captain and finisher: Damien]
[Deployment and artifice: Mina]
[Pressure and blade: Vivienne]
[Control and alchemy: Isolde]
"Captain and target would describe the structure more honestly, though committees dislike admitting their entertainment needs bait," Damien said, watching the wall accept all four roles.
"Keep volunteering accurate criticism near active microphones, I would enjoy learning whether fines can exceed your remaining points," Isolde replied, adjusting one glove.
’She knows exactly how poor I am, which feels invasive after she watched me burn fifty-two thousand in one evening.’
The equipment desk rejected Mina’s claimant relay twice before a clerk noticed the maker field required her signature rather than Damien’s.
"Stop pressing his seal over my registry, since that circuit belongs to me until each user accepts the terms," she said, pulling the copper plate out of the clerk’s reach.
The clerk glanced toward Damien for support, receiving nothing except Blank’s narrow silver eyes above a black coat button.
"She owns the device, so asking me to override her sounds dangerous for both of us," Damien said, resting his wrist beside the unused claimant field.
Mina entered four separate permissions, limiting the relay to position, declared timing and emergency condition while blocking inventory or skill access.
[Four-person claimant relay registered]
[Maker authority: Mina]
[User access requires individual consent]
[Command transfer: none]
’Good, the system can write that line until the entire mountain gets tired of reading it.’
Vivienne accepted first, then Isolde read every field before pressing her seal, leaving Damien to close the circuit through his claimant mark.
Four copper points warmed beneath their wrists, each carrying distance and one steady pulse without opening anything private behind it.
"I can feel where each of you stands, though none of your thoughts have invaded my morning, so Mina has shown admirable restraint," Isolde said, turning her wrist beneath the light.
"Your thoughts would charge laboratory storage after ten minutes, which made blocking them a financial decision," Mina replied, locking the relay plate inside her case.
’Different voices, different knives, same table, and somehow I am supposed to command this without losing a damn organ.’
They received twelve hours before opening calibration, enough time to inspect their assigned lane and inventory local materials under supervision.
Isolde collected gray moss from a drainage seam, finding enough neutralizing resin to replace two carried antidotes if the local heat activated it correctly.
Vivienne walked every narrow crossing, tapping stone with one scabbard until three hollow sections returned different notes beneath her feet.
Mina measured the score towers without connecting any device, growing less friendly each time their timing crystals returned perfect synchronization.
’Perfect equipment inside a place Blank hates, sure, that sounds much safer than a machine admitting one honest fault.’
Damien waited until the others spread across the lane before opening the System Shop behind one dark viewing wall.
[System Points: 22,000]
[Sterling Saber Arts, Form Three]
[Mirrored Rain grimoire: 18,000 SP]
[Requirement for live use: Level 1,000]
"Buying a sealed technique four days before a national final looks stupid even from inside my own head," Damien muttered, touching the purchase field anyway.
[Mirrored Rain acquired]
[System Points: 22,000 → 4,000]
[Skill state: sealed]
’Four thousand left, no usable new form, plus a death flag sitting at one hundred percent, bro, this shop really knows how to make ownership feel insulting.’
Verdict rang once inside its sheath, then three overlapping rain-lines appeared above the silver tally before closing behind a Level 1,000 lock.
Mina found him near the viewing wall and read the change through his face before the system panel finished fading.
"You purchased the expensive thing after I told you waiting remained financially intelligent," she said, placing both hands against her hips.
"Financial intelligence has never survived contact with somebody trying to kill me, so I bought the blade storm," he replied, keeping the sealed grimoire out of sight.
"Then reach the requirement before attempting it, since I refuse to repair pathways you burned through impatience," she answered, pushing one cooling strip into his pocket.
’That was almost support until she threatened my organs, which means the workshop remains emotionally stable.’
At sunset, all forty teams entered the calibration lanes while public boards recorded speed, output and relay delay under identical white light.
Team Sterling crossed its lane in thirty-seven seconds, struck all twelve targets and held a four-point formation within one tenth of Mina’s declared spacing.
Three nearby coaches stopped reviewing their teams to watch the replay, giving Damien outside confirmation that the run looked perfectly clean.
The official scanner chimed clean, showing no fault across the towers, floor marks or claimant relay at any point during the run.
’Thirty-seven seconds with zero missed contact, so why does the score clerk look like somebody just handed him a dead animal?’
Their lane number appeared above the central wall beside one bright result.
[Calibration coefficient: 0.800]
Mina studied the figure before lifting her copper reader, while Blank pushed its head out of Damien’s coat and hissed toward every official route marked safe.
"Nobody touches that tower until I learn why perfect equipment just removed twenty percent of us," she said, walking straight toward the score clerk.
