Bram’s aunt closed the grocery two hours early to give them the back room, which had a long table, no windows, and a hammer under the counter out front.

The map of Marlowe Keep went down across that table at seven in the evening, four sheets wide, assembled from survey plats, tax filings and one very expensive bribe.

’Eleven days, one arena, and a house that already booked the room, yeah, tonight I find out exactly who walks out of this grocery still helping me.’

Vivienne arrived first, out of uniform, in a plain gray coat with both blades on a shoulder rig instead of the Ashe half-cape.

She looked at the map for nine seconds, put one finger on the eastern service road, and spoke before anybody offered her anything.

"I take the eastern approach and whatever hunters come down it, with my house learning nothing until this is finished," she said.

"You are volunteering to break a standing Ashe instruction on behalf of a Marlowe you have met four times," Damien answered.

"You are going to argue me out of the only competent sword in this grocery," Vivienne replied, already pulling the eastern sheet toward herself.

’She decided before she walked in, damn, and she is going to pay for this at home in a currency I cannot cover.’

Mina claimed the evidence chain without being asked either, which she announced by putting the paired custody case on the table like a bid.

"Everything we take out of that keep has to survive a tribunal, so nothing gets touched, moved or photographed except by me," she said.

"That means you are in the laboratory rather than behind a barrier line, and the laboratory is where the poison lives," Damien answered.

"Then I get to see the poison before it becomes an exhibit, which is the only way an exhibit survives a house lawyer," Mina replied.

Bram set three phones on the table in a row before visibly forcing himself to add a fourth.

"The ward network can move people, food and paperwork through eleven city districts without a Marlowe courier ever seeing a Sterling seal," he said.

"Hey, your ward network is nine funded beds and one grocery vault with a hammer," Damien answered.

"Ah, it is nine beds, a grocery vault, four clinic porters, two ferry clerks and a woman at the registry who hates nobles," Bram replied.

’He built a courier service out of people nobody looks at, yeah, the script has no entry for any of them.’

Isolde’s contribution arrived at nine through advocate Feyn, who came in through the shop’s back door with his collar up and his hands shaking.

He had spent three days becoming the man who wrote that paragraph six weeks ago, at the cost of a client list plus most of one night’s sleep.

"She gave me one sentence to carry and she made me memorize it rather than write it," he said.

"Then say it exactly the way she said it, since she chose every word for a reason," Damien answered.

"The ancestral rite has been held nine times in four hundred years, the house scrubbed the fourth one from the public record," Feyn recited.

"Why would a house bury one rite out of nine and leave the other eight standing," Vivienne asked, looking up from the eastern sheet.

"They buried it since the accused walked out of that arena alive," Feyn said, sitting down rather suddenly on a crate of tinned fish.

The room went quiet, then Blank climbed onto the table to sit in the middle of the Keep’s lower levels like a small ink-black paperweight.

’The rite can be survived, the house buried the one time it was, shit, that is why nobody in Averill knows the challenge clause exists.’

They built the route in four hours, it came out ugly the way honest routes always do.

Every official road into the Keep was watched, the service gates all carried wardlines, the northern wall held venom wards that killed birds at forty meters.

Which left the monster tunnels beneath the alchemy grounds, where Marlowe dumped failed specimens and nobody had walked in nine years.

The tunnels reached the prison tower’s foundation, the foundation reached the lower cells, the lower cells reached exactly one place.

It reached no outer wall, nothing resembling a gate, road, ferry, sewer, roof or window anywhere inside that compound.

The only route out of Isolde’s cell led down and inward, through the ancestral arena, which was the room the house had already reserved.

"They did not build a prison with an escape route, only one that ends somewhere," Mina said, tracing it twice.

"Then we are not breaking her out, since there is nowhere to break her out to," Damien answered.

Damien spent his shop balance that night in front of all three of them, without explaining the interface, which they had long since stopped asking about.

’Twenty-four thousand eight hundred on reads, brands and a coat, damn, I still cannot afford anything that would let me simply take her.’

Eye of Reckoning at the second mastery returned Aspect categories instead of level bands, which mattered against a beast nobody had documented.

Sinner’s Brand at the second mastery held two targets together, which mattered in a room containing both the poisoner and the heir.

Stay of Execution at the second mastery deferred sixty percent instead of thirty, which mattered since the thing in that arena was absolutely going to hit him.

’Sixty percent of a venom beast is still a number that ends me if the timer runs out wrong, damn, and there is no version of this where I do not gamble it.’

The full sheet posted at two in the morning while the others slept on grocery crates, and Damien read it alone with Blank asleep against his collar.

’Board six, seven hundred levels, the only line on this sheet that scares me is still the last one, yeah, it has not moved since Chapter one.’

Vivienne woke at four to find him still reading a schedule he had already memorized, then sat down across the table without asking permission.

"You have not told any of us what entering that arena does to you legally," she said.

"An outside challenger in an ancestral rite accepts the house’s judgment on himself as well, which means whatever they find her guilty of, they can find me guilty of too," Damien answered.

"At what point exactly were you planning to mention that to the people around this table," she replied.

"Right now, while everybody in this room can still walk out of it, so consider the mention delivered," Damien said.

’She is not leaving, she is filing it, yeah, that is somehow worse for my nerves than an argument would have been.’

Vivienne looked at him for a long moment, then picked up the eastern sheet again and started marking hunter rotations on it in her own hand.

The last thing Feyn carried out before dawn was a name, delivered only after Isolde decided the risk had finally become worth the outcome.

The evidentiary session listed a single family member as sealed custodian of the acquisition record, meaning somebody had signed for the compound before it reached her cabinet.

Celene Marlowe, her father’s sister, whose custody signature sat under the protection of the heir Evander, whose name closed every route on the map.

Damien folded the schedule into his coat, told Bram to have the tunnel entrance mapped by nightfall, and started counting down from eleven.
