Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 50 Rattled
The system’s unprompted warning remained near Damien’s left eye while Mina covered her workshop windows using copper mesh.
[Do not answer what he wants you to fear.]
’It spoke first and still refuses follow-up questions, damn, even supernatural advice comes with terrible customer support.’
Three saved recordings of Soren’s defeat played above the central bench, each ending on his message about the Ledger.
Bram occupied one stool beneath a stack of disclosure reports while his academy coat disappeared behind paper screens.
"We have twenty-seven public fights and nine unauthorized camera routes," he said, expanding the list across Mina’s wall, "those are only confirmed sources."
"Start with anything showing the tally near its current capacity," Damien replied, placing Verdict beside the recordings.
"Every source shows something different since your held Debt lacks a visible number," Mina said, drawing measurement boxes around his gold marks.
’Soren said the Ledger has an end, which could mean capacity rather than the system, do not gift the Benefactor a reaction.’
Bram printed the exposure audit vertically while Mina attached each line to its surviving camera angle.
[Gala: First public Reckoning]
[Workshop trap: Sinner’s Brand observed]
[Midterm hunt: Stay of Execution inferred]
[Flood Line: Debt conductance observed]
[Bloodright: Verdict bond observed]
[Tournament rounds: Release withheld]
[Known public cap estimate: 200]
[Planned safe standing hold: 220]
[Current hold: 199]
Eleven points separated Damien from a safe margin once ordinary arena damage entered tomorrow’s semifinal.
’One decent strike pushes me near overflow, shit, Lucas only needs luck to make that happen at the worst second.’
Mina froze a gala frame where black residue touched the outer edge of his first visible tally.
"The Benefactor could infer a ceiling through release behavior without knowing your system," she said, sharpening the image until pixels broke.
"Then we feed it three ceilings and watch which one receives a counter," Damien replied, clearing space between evidence tablets.
"Nah, we feed the shell network," Mina corrected, opening separate sponsor routes, "nothing touches living residue inside my workshop again."
They created one vulnerability involving mana exhaustion, another around physical overflow and a third suggesting Verdict failed beyond two hundred Debt.
Bram leaked each through a different student channel while complaining that rumor work required more lying than logistics.
"Man, the mana story reached Lucas’s public fan group within eight seconds," he said, watching golden profile icons duplicate it.
"The physical version moved directly toward tournament maintenance after posting," Damien replied, following its shell route through Eye of Reckoning.
"Verdict failure went nowhere," Mina said, pinching the third line until its dead route collapsed, "which means somebody already rejected that guess."
’Maintenance wants the overflow story, good, tomorrow’s arena fault may be designed around my body reaching capacity.’
The unprompted system sentence disappeared, then another line replaced it without any quest border.
[He is guessing.]
Damien stood so quickly his stool struck the floor behind both boots.
"The system finally answered and chose the least comforting possible wording," he said, staring until letters remained stable.
"Your invisible panel changed without you touching anything this time?" Mina asked, putting down her soldering iron before heat reached the evidence map.
"It says the Benefactor is guessing about my system and limits," Damien replied, naming the message without adding certainty it never offered.
Bram looked toward empty air beside Damien while one disclosure report slid from his lap.
"Does that mean the Benefactor cannot see your actual interface?" he asked, relief arriving too quickly across his narrow face.
"Maybe, though the system knows what he believes without explaining how," Damien said, picking up the fallen stool.
’One mystery reassured me by revealing a larger problem, excellent, you absolute clown, try feeling grateful later.’
Mina reopened their three leaks and found the maintenance route purchasing diagrams of Blood Ledger overflow behavior.
The buyer used a committee credential issued beneath Corven’s office, then forwarded everything toward the semifinal barrier team.
Its purchase included floor stress diagrams and emergency override positions no combat scout needed for ordinary preparation.
’Studying how I lose no longer interests them, those bastards are choosing where the arena should break once my Debt reaches their fake limit.’
"They plan to make your false weakness real through equipment," she said, copying each transaction before its shell closed.
"Inspect tomorrow’s floor and preserve independent recordings outside tournament control," Damien replied, fastening Verdict beneath his coat.
"I need physical access before any barrier scan becomes trustworthy," Mina answered, pointing toward the credential denial already waiting on her screen.
"Use my contestant route while Bram registers three student cameras under separate owners," he said, handing her the black semifinal badge.
Bram began over-explaining backup positions before either of them questioned his ability to place the feeds.
"One records from the north rail and another uses Rhea’s public channel," he said, adding a third position beneath the judge platform, "the last stays analog."
"An analog crystal cannot receive remote corrections," Mina said, taking that device from his equipment case, "surprisingly useful, inventory boy."
’They are scared and still solving the next ten seconds, good, this team refuses to become an audience.’
Damien’s phone chimed with one direct message while the exposure audit continued crawling across the workshop wall.
[Vivienne Ashe]
[Do not lose before I understand you.]
He read the sentence four times while every interpretation became more dangerous than its punctuation.
’Concern, threat or both, damn, asking would probably make her delete the entire phone.’
Mina glanced toward his screen but waited until Damien turned it around voluntarily.
"She demands your survival with truly terrible emotional efficiency there," Mina said, returning to the barrier map without changing expression.
"I cannot decide whether that line wants an answer," Damien replied, typing three versions before deleting all of them.
"Send something honest instead of performing more mysterious rich-boy nonsense," she said, marking the southern arena seam in red.
Damien wrote that he intended to survive and would answer whatever she asked afterward.
Vivienne read it immediately without replying, which somehow felt more serious than another message.
’She wants the truth and Mina told me to give it, fuck, tomorrow contains too many reasons to remain alive.’
The semifinal morning brought Lucas into the eastern tunnel beneath gold sponsor light and a perfect public smile.
His golden-brown hair rested neatly above hazel-gold eyes, while white armor carried no mark from earlier tournament rounds.
Damien entered opposite him with three fights still bruised across his ribs beneath Mina’s reinforced coat.
The crowd chanted both names while commentary panels compared Lucas’s clean route against Damien’s gauntlet victories.
"Whatever happened around Soren, I regret that our match inherited such suspicion," Lucas said, offering one hand toward the cameras.
"Regret becomes cheaper when your analysts bought the data that trained him," Damien replied, accepting the grip before officials intervened.
Lucas’s smile held while golden luck moved beneath his palm and made one loose arena tile settle near Damien’s heel.
’Fate is active before the bell, good, stop expecting fairness from anything touching his hands.’
Mina’s voice entered the receiver through Bram’s analog backup rather than tournament channels.
"The southern floor contains a fault that every registry scan reports as intact," she said, sending its location beneath Damien’s sight.
"Can you disable that fault safely before our opening exchange begins?" he asked, moving his boot away without looking down.
"No, touching the seam triggers committee alarms and probably whatever trap waits inside," she replied, anger sharpening each word.
The barrier control panel flashed one maintenance warning, then cleared itself before any official reacted.
[Semifinal arena certified]
[Structural faults: 0]
Damien looked from the invisible fault toward Lucas while the golden protagonist raised his sword beneath roaring stands.
’The registry says nothing exists, and Fate’s Favorite stands exactly where the floor remains safe, fine, accrue every stolen advantage.’
The starting bell rang before tournament maintenance could pretend to check again.
