Chapter 100- Heir (Part 2)
The Red Fang clan comes from down south, and they controlled a gigantic part of the continent, including a good part of the Red Desert, which was a gold mine of resources and considered to be one of the most dangerous lands in the entire world.
The clan had a huge influence, and many could even consider it one of the main rivals of Sagardia when it comes to power. Naturally, being rivals, the two sides decided to try and create some sort of connection that could benefit both, and the perfect way to do that was naturally through arranged marriage.
Their son, Fate Thorinn, and the princess of Sagardia, Venera Silversoul, were the perfect two for that kind of marriage. However, naturally, Venera refused that offer strongly. She didn’t want to be used by her father for his political goals, and that came at the expense of anything that might happen.
Yet, Theodore, being Theodore, decided to still push for that marriage, knowing that Venera was still under his control.
However, because of her refusal, it didn’t become public yet. Nobody truly expected Fate to come out of his own accord and visit Venera so suddenly.
The looks on the people present were enough of an indication of the kind of mess this was leading to. Rize himself knew that this was a very bad situation for Venera, as it pushed the idea that she had accepted the offer and that she was his fiancée now.
Venera looked coldly at the man before she pulled her hand away and wiped it on her clothes before his eyes.
"What brought you here?" She asked. "I don’t recall ever inviting you."
"So cold as usual~" The young man said with a soft chuckle. "I came to congratulate you on awakening and, of course, to see you. I couldn’t make it in time for your ceremony, and for that I apologize."
"It is no problem," Venera replied. "You’re free to leave whenever you’re ready." She said as she turned around to leave.
"Hey now, wouldn’t you invite me in and hear what I came to say, at least?" He said. "I have something to tell you that you might like."
"..." Venera stopped and looked back at him. "What is it?"
Hearing her interested tone, Fate’s smile widened. "Tea perhaps?"
Venera sighed as she rolled her eyes. "Follow me."
With that, Venera led Fate through the palace until they reached the patio, where she sat down and pointed at the other seat. Rize stood behind her silently, watching Fate’s movements carefully. He knew more than anyone else the kind of psychopath that boy is.
’He posed one of the biggest challenges to the protagonist and killed many, many, many people with cold blood. He is also quite strong and extremely smart. The full package.’ Rize thought to himself.
"Mmm, what a nice view," Fate said as he sat down and relaxed in the chair. "I could never get sick of this beautiful palace and this city. They’re one of my favorite places in the world."
"What did you want to say to me?" Venera asked. "And make it quick; I’m quite busy."
"That is very much like you," Fate said, not caring about the blatantly rude words Venera had just said. "How is your progress so far with your new powers?"
"Good," Venera replied.
"That’s great. There are only a few weeks left before the academy tests. I heard this year’s entrance exam will be particularly hard, as the influx of kids who awakened and wish to join is almost double the normal number."
"I heard of that."
’Usually, the number of participants doesn’t exceed 50 million; now it’s almost 100 million. This particular generation of awakened is quite unique, as their numbers are huge, which almost never happens.’ Rize thought to himself. ’Surprise, surprise, the protagonist’s generation is the most special generation of all.’
"We have to be very ready for anything. That is why I came to talk to you, Venera." He said. "My offer is simple. Let’s team up for the test. You and I, we could have a great chance to secure the best spots and get the most benefits from the test."
"..."
’The academy exams are basically a contest to see who gets the most points, and those who do get into the best classes and get the best package in general. It’s a system built on meritocracy but also on classism. There are those at the top and those at the bottom, and everyone is trying to get the highest position they can.’
Amongst 100 million individuals, contesting for the top spot is only for the best talents of that generation and the geniuses. However, the value they gain from getting that first spot was simply unimaginable; in the eyes of everyone else, they would be seen as gods or something beyond.
Rize would be lying if he said he wasn’t tempted to compete for the first spot. But he wasn’t sure if he was strong enough to actually get to that level. It was bound to be an extremely fierce battle for that spot.
’Besides, is it really worth it to try and get that spot? If I got one of the top 100 spots, that’s enough for me. It would get me all the things I want access to. Trying to stand out even more than that sounds like too much of a hassle.’ Rize thought to himself. ’But for Venera... Hm, she is definitely aiming for it.’
Rize knew that Venera needed to prove herself to be able to stand up to her father and every other enemy. This offer from Fate, as suspicious as it felt, was still very enticing for someone as ambitious as Venera. The boy was as much of a genius as every other person aiming for the top spot. He was an incredibly skillful fighter with powerful abilities.
’I think she might accept the offer and use him to her advantage. That’s the most reasonable way to go about-’
"I refuse."
The entire place fell into deep silence. Rize’s eyes moved to look at Venera for a moment. He didn’t show any reaction on his face, but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t surprised. Even Fate seemed a bit taken aback.
’Flat-out rejection? That’s...’
"Haha, Venera, we both share the same goal of reaching the high spots. I’m sure if we put our efforts together, we could achieve better results."
"That doesn’t interest me. I have other plans. Thank you for the offer, nonetheless." Venera replied as she stood up. "Do you need anything else?"
"..."
Rize was speechless for words. He wasn’t sure what Venera was trying to do by turning the opportunity down.
’Is it because she doesn’t trust Fate? It still wouldn’t make sense. To achieve what she wants to achieve, she would have to work with evil, untrustworthy people. She can’t be thinking that she would always cooperate with good people, right?’
Even as he asked that question in his head, he wasn’t sure.
Fate looked at Venera, pursed his lips into a wry smile, and then nodded. "Well, my offer is still open. Please give it some thought."
"Not necessary. The butler will guide you to the door when you’re done."
Then, Venera turned around and left.
