Chapter 106: The rescue team’s decimation

"W-What is this?"

The rescue team had made it to the Typhon Tribe’s old village, looking at the ruins in awe and shock.

The team consisted of four Nemean Tribesmen and two Typhon Tribesmen, each specializing in healing, travel, and protection.

The leader of this team was a man who could shapeshift into large animals, and he was used as the team’s method of transportation.

Another member of the team could teleport and was a backup in case the team leader got injured or incapacitated in some way.

"This is your old village?" The team leader asked the Typhon tribesmen

"Yes, though it’s seen better days. However, something is different about the place."

"The graves, they’ve been dug up!" The other Typhon Tribesman pointed out.

"What?"

They both rushed over to the graves, the Nemean Tribesmen following behind to see what was going on.

When they arrived, the Typhon Tribesmen became furious. The graves of their loved ones were not only desecrated, but they could see some body parts scattered all over the ruins.

Some were slightly burned; others were chopped off. It was as if someone had dug them up just to destroy the corpses.

"Who would do such a thing?! What did our fallen do to deserve such treatment?!"

"I don’t know, but let’s quickly bury what we can and continue searching for the expedition team."

The Typhon Tribesmen reluctantly nodded and began to look for more body parts of their fallen.

"Hang on, do you see that? It looks like a person." The healer pointed into the distance.

"Hmm? You’re right! Could that person be from the expedition team?"

"I can’t tell; they’re too far. But look, they’re pointing at us, so it must be them."

"Good. This is going better than we could have hoped. We’ll give first aid to the team in case they need it and quickly rush them back to the village. Then, we’ll come back and give your people a proper burial." The leader spoke

"Yes, that sounds good."

"Wait!" The teleporter woman just happened to remember something very crucial. "Do you remember what Shaman Kanan and Elder Telah had told us? Be wary of corpses, as they could be controlled by the Verminus Plant."

"I thought they were talking about animals or monsters."

"If they were talking about animals or monsters, why would they specifically mention the corpses buried in this tribe?"

None of them could believe that they had forgotten such an important piece of information. Their minds were so focused on rescuing their people that they tuned everything else out after setting off.

"Let’s move; we don’t know what can happen here, especially since the graves were dug up. For now, we’ll–"

A ray of light pierced right through the leader’s head, killing him in an instant.

"Everyone, back away!"

The teleporter woman disappeared from the area, appearing on the outskirts of the village. The others, however, weren’t able to move as fast as she could.

Another ray of light flashed, and the healer was taken out next, the beam hitting her heart. After her was one of the Typhon Tribesmen who fell into a trap and got mauled to death by plant-controlled corpses.

"Arrrghh! Help! Help me!"

"Stay back! Stay back, you bastards!"

The teleporter saw both of her teammates being overrun by an army of corpses. The man from the Nemean Tribe could create barriers, so he was fine for the time being.

Therefore, the teleporter went after the Typhon Tribesman, teleporting next to him, grabbing his arm, then teleporting him out of there.

As quickly as she rescued him, she went back after her tribesman, but the moment she teleported in, the barrier shattered, and the man was mauled to death.

"Dammit!" She quickly teleported back to the Typhon Tribesman, grabbed him once more, then teleported the two of them out of there.

"T-The team!" He groaned

"They’re dead! We have to escape, or we’re next!"

She teleported again, again, and again, long after she began to grow tired, long after she felt her strength wane, and long after blood began dripping down her nose. She didn’t stop.

It was only after she nearly puked up blood that she finally decided to rest. At this point, she was already close to the Nemean Village, only around a half day’s journey left.

"Haaaah! Nnnnghh!" Her breathing was ragged, her limbs felt like jelly, and her head was throbbing like crazy.

"You need to rest. If you don’t, you’ll expierence Spirit Energy Reflux!" Even the Typhon Tribesmen went through that pain after using all of their spirit energy.

This was a universal trait for those who possessed spirit energy.

"Y-Yeah, I know. I’ll rest for a bit, then we’ll get moving again."

"Okay. That sounds–" Before he could finish, his head was crushed by a log, and his body flew into a tree.

Walking into the light were dozens of corpses, each of them eyeing the woman.

"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" The woman teleported out of there and wouldn’t dare stop until she reached her home.

"So then, after Terin and I found the spirit tiger, we began to fight it. Now, remember that Terin wanted to be recognized as a great warrior, so you’d think that he would have some great plan."

"Hahahaha! He just attacked without a second thought, huh?" Viola asked Kanan, who was telling the story of how he fought a spirit tiger.

"He nearly got his head chopped off. I had to save him."

"Heh, Terin isn’t always the brightest." Alongside Kanan, Viola grew up with Terin, so all of them were friends as children.

"No, but he’s a great friend. I know I can trust my back with him. That is, if he isn’t dead from taking too much poison." Kanan hoped that Terin took his advice. In fact, Kanan decided to visit him soon to make sure the guy was still around.

’I need to visit all of my friends. The last time I hung out with them was back when our warrior training finished. Oh, I guess I spent time with Alue, but that was a crisis.’

"SHAMAN KANAN! SHAMAN KANAN! IT’S AN EMERGENCY! THE RESCUE TEAM WAS WIPED OUT!"
