Chapter 64: Chapter 53 : The New Body (1)

Ethan did not move immediately.

He stood beneath the pale daylight spilling through the cave entrance, his gaze fixed on the world beyond it. The transformation was over. Yet the feeling of having become something new had not faded. He lowered his eyes to his hands. They looked the same.

At least, at a glance.

The fingers were still his. The palms were still his. The scars he had accumulated through his months in the cultivation world were no where to be found. It was as if he was reborn or in his case, rebuilt into someone new. And when he slowly clenched his fist, the sensation was different. There was no strain.

No stiffness.

His fingers closed with a smoothness that felt almost unnatural. Ethan opened his hand again. He repeated the movement. Then he rotated his wrist. His body responded immediately.

Too immediately.

His thoughts barely formed before the movement was already complete. Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Interesting."

He took a step, then another. He walked across the cave. Nothing seemed wrong. That was precisely what made it strange. His balance felt more natural than before. His body seemed to adjust itself before he consciously noticed the need to adjust.

He stopped.

Turned.

Then moved again.

There was no wasted motion. Ethan stood still for several breaths. He had spent months learning how his human body responded to cultivation. He knew the limits of his muscles, the condition of his bones, the circulation of his Qi, and the small imperfections that came with a mortal physique.

This body was still his. But it no longer behaved exactly like the body he knew. He closed his eyes. Instead of moving, he turned his attention inward.

His breathing was steady.

His heartbeat was difficult to notice. Not absent. Simply quieter than he remembered. Ethan remained still for a while. His attention passed through his body, examining it as carefully as he could. The muscles, the bones, the organs, the meridians and most especially the circulation of Qi.

Everything was present.

Yet beneath all of it was something else. Something that had not existed before. He could feel it faintly. A strange vitality threaded through his body. It did not behave like Qi. It did not move through his meridians according to the Evergreen Breath Method.

It felt closer to his blood.

Closer to his physical existence itself. Ethan opened his eyes. He did not attempt to explain it, at least not yet. A fact came before a theory. He had learned that much already. His gaze drifted toward the cave entrance.

Sunlight still crossed the stone floor.

He remembered the expectations he had carried from Earth. Vampires. Blood. Creatures of the night. Sunlight. Stories had given him countless rules. But stories were not evidence but like they were called back on Earth, Fantasy. A work of fiction, one he is starting to be part of. Ethan stepped toward the entrance.

The sunlight touched his boots.

Nothing happened.

He continued forward. The light reached his robes. Still nothing. He stopped directly beneath the opening. Warm sunlight fell across his face. Ethan waited.

One breath.

Two.

Five.

Nothing. No burning sensation. No weakness. No sudden loss of strength. He raised one hand and allowed the sunlight to rest upon it. He turned it over. Then he looked at his palm.

Normal.

Ethan gave a quiet breath filled with relief through his nose. "So that one doesn’t apply."

It was a small discovery but an important one. He had no intention of assuming that every rule attached to vampires on Earth had followed him into this world.

This was not Earth.

There had never been vampires here. And whatever had been created through the Vampire Template was not obligated to obey fictional expectations. If a rule existed, he would discover it through observation.

Not memory.

Not assumption.

Observation.

His eyes moved toward the forest beyond the cave. Then he looked down at himself. Something else needed checking.

His appearance.

The cave had no mirror. But a little farther down the slope, he remembered seeing a narrow stream during his preparations. Ethan walked toward it. His footsteps were quieter than he expected. He noticed that too. The change was subtle but it was there.

The forest around the cave was peaceful. Leaves shifted gently in the breeze. Small insects moved through the grass. From the distant trees farther away, a bird called once before falling silent. Ethan followed the sound of running water until he found the stream.

He crouched beside it. The surface was clear enough. He looked down. For a moment, he simply stared. The face reflected in the water was familiar.

And unfamiliar.

His features had retained their basic structure, yet they appeared more refined than he remembered. His skin was pale, but not sickly. His face looked young. Perhaps twenty-three. Perhaps twenty-four. The same age he had appeared around before the transformation.

His long black hair fell around his shoulders, slightly disordered from the transformation. His expression remained calm. His eyes were dark, quiet and Deep.

Ethan tilted his head slightly. The reflection did the same. He raised a hand and touched his cheek. The image copied him. He smiled faintly.

"So this is me now."

He studied the reflection for another few moments. He had expected something more dramatic.

Fangs.

A monstrous face.

Some obvious sign that he had crossed from human into another species. Instead, the change was almost elegant, with a somewhat noble feel to it. Overall he still looked human. That was useful.

Very useful.

Ethan’s gaze lowered. His body had changed. His nature had changed. But his appearance could still allow him to move through human society without immediately drawing attention. That was an advantage he intended to preserve.

He sat beside the stream. Then his stomach gave a quiet reminder of something more ordinary. Ethan paused. Then he laughed softly.

"Hungry?"

The thought almost amused him. After everything that had happened, his body could apparently still complain about something as ordinary as food.

He remembered the provisions he had brought into the cave before beginning the transformation. He had prepared for the possibility that the process would take longer than expected. The food had been packed to last.

He reached back toward the small storage pouch he had left among his belongings.

A few simple provisions remained.

Nothing special.
