Chapter 80: The Map Aldric Drew

The war room, as Reeve had started calling it half-jokingly, occupied what used to be the apartment's rarely-used dining nook, now covered wall to wall in Aldric's forty-one years of careful, handwritten intelligence. Marek had contributed a whiteboard from somewhere, its origin left deliberately vague, and Mia had taped up color-coded index cards with a system nobody else fully understood but everyone had learned not to disturb.

"There are six facilities I know of," Aldric said, tracing lines across a hand-drawn regional map with a steadiness that hadn't existed in his hands two weeks ago. "Sector Twelve was the largest, but hardly the only one. This one—" he tapped a spot considerably further north, "—handles ongoing integration work. Fresh cases, not the long-term maintenance Kaelmoor specialized in."

"How many people," Dana asked, voice tight.

"I don't know exact numbers. I know it's active. I know Corvin oversees it directly, which tells you something about how much Marguerite trusts him with anything requiring actual subtlety." Aldric's mouth twisted, old bitterness surfacing. "He's not a subtle man. Which might work in your favor, eventually, if you ever need to exploit that particular weakness."

Cole studied the map, feeling the scope of what they were actually up against settle into something considerably more concrete than abstract dread had ever managed. "Six facilities. Decades of operation. This isn't a cult hiding in alleys anymore. This is infrastructure."

"It always was," Aldric said quietly. "You just hadn't seen enough of it yet to recognize the shape."

Thessaly, reviewing the northern facility's layout with professional focus, finally spoke. "This one's considerably more exposed than Kaelmoor was. Regular staff rotation, less institutional cover. If we wanted to make a real dent in their operation, this would be the place to start."

"Not yet," Cole said, feeling the mark beneath his collar settle into something patient rather than eager. "We just survived Kaelmoor. Elena's still recovering. Halden's barely stabilized. We don't rush into a second facility on momentum alone."

"Agreed," Dana said, though her voice carried the particular strain of someone whose patience was being tested by a genuinely good reason rather than a bad one. "Understanding first. Same as always."

Reeve, studying the northern facility's marked layout, tapped a section near its perimeter. "This access road only shows up on one of the two survey years Aldric gave us. Might mean it's new. Might mean something got built there recently that wasn't there before."

"Good catch," Aldric said, genuine approval in his voice. "I hadn't noticed that discrepancy myself."

"Six weeks of paranoid detail-noticing," Reeve said. "Finally paying dividends on paperwork instead of dust patterns."

Vesper studied the map longest after everyone else had drifted off to bed, tracing the six marked locations with careful attention, notebook open beside her though her hand hadn't moved to draw anything yet. The apartment had gone quiet around her, Elena's soft breathing audible from the couch, the ordinary hum of a household finally, briefly at rest.

"You're looking for something specific," Cole said, settling beside her.

"I don't know what. Just — a pattern, maybe. Something that connects these locations beyond just being useful to the Choir." She frowned at the map, frustrated, finger hovering over each marked point in turn like she was waiting for one of them to answer back. "It feels like I should recognize something here. The way I recognized Kaelmoor before I understood why."

"Give it time. You don't have to force every recognition on schedule."

"I know. I just hate the waiting part. Always have, apparently, in whatever life came before this one." She managed a tired, wry smile. "Small mercy that this one at least comes with people worth waiting alongside."

"High praise."

"Don't let it go to your head. I've got a whole list of complaints ready to balance it out if you get smug." But she leaned into him anyway, some of the tension finally easing out of her shoulders, notebook still closed beside her, patient for once instead of demanding an answer it wasn't ready to give.

Cole bumped her shoulder gently, and the two of them sat with the map a while longer, six marked points on a regional chart representing considerably more history and considerably more danger than either of them had fully processed yet, patient for now, waiting for whatever came next to arrive on its own unhurried schedule instead of theirs.
