Chapter 341 After the Empire Fell Silent
Chapter 341 After the Empire Fell Silent
Bai Zihan was already too preoccupied with his own thoughts to care about the Second Prince.
He didn’t care about palace drama or any of the chaos unfolding around him.
However, he did realize that without his interference, the Second Prince might have indeed become the Emperor.
Still, Bai Zihan didn’t think so-or rather, he believed that the Second Prince’s reign would have been short-lived even if he was successful.
Why?
Because Chong Sheng, the Heaven-Chosen One, was in the Falling Star Empire.
Perhaps he might have taken advantage of the chaos from the Imperial conflict to seize the throne himself, or place someone of his choosing upon it.
In any case, the Second Prince was destined not to sit on the throne, even if Bai Zihan hadn’t intervened.
Well, there was no use pondering what could have been.
There wasn’t much that he had gained from coming to the Falling Star Empire- aside from meeting a Heaven-Chosen One.
Bai Zihan knew that Chong Sheng could become a terrifying opponent one day, and the only comforting thought was that Chong Sheng didn’t seem to regard him as an enemy-yet.
Bai Zihan stretched slightly, brushing dust off his robes. His expression returned to that lazy indifference.
Then, he turned toward his Clan Member and spoke casually-almost bored.
“I’ve lost all interest,” he said. “Let’s go back!”
The words hit everyone like thunder.
The battlefield, littered with corpses and the stench of burnt Qi, fell silent.
It looked like the Imperial Family would now be under the control of Bai Zihan but he wants to leave now?
The Emperor, who had braced himself for another disaster, blinked in disbelief. After all this… he’s just leaving?
He could have seized the entire Falling Star Empire if he wished. The military, the court, even the people-after such a display, none would dare oppose him. Yet Bai Zihan didn’t seem to notice… or perhaps, he simply didn’t care.
The Emperor exhaled slowly, relief washing over him. His hands, hidden within his sleeves, trembled slightly.
He had thought this calamity would end with his head rolling across the palace floor.
But despite all that had happened, it seemed that things were finally returning to normal.
“Anyway, Grand Elder is certainly taking his time. He must be growing old,” Bai Zihan said, noticing that Bai Ren was still not back.
No one else would have dared say such a thing about someone like Bai Ren-an existence akin to a god, one of the strongest in the Desolate Heaven Empire.
“Bai Zihan, you’ve even started speaking behind my back now?”
Bai Ren’s voice came from behind.
He was dragging two Great Ascension Realm cultivators with him. Judging by their condition, they had been the strongest among the enemy-and likely held the most information.
Bai Ren had kept them alive for questioning; otherwise, they would have long since joined the others in hell.
Bai Zihan wasn’t the least bit worried that Bai Ren had heard his comment. Not like he told a lie anyways.
What surprised him was that the Grand Elder had managed to restrain himself -and had kept his earlier request to keep a few alive.
The captives looked like hollow shells, their souls crushed and wills broken.
Well, against Grand Elder, anyone would have their will crushed.
Bai Zihan walked closer, his boots crunching against shattered stone and dried blood.
He stopped a few steps away, expression calm, tone indifferent.
“Tell me,” he said softly, “where is your headquarters?”
The two men froze.
One of them, the older, tried to speak-but only a hoarse wheeze came out.
The other quickly shook his head, trembling violently.
“We… don’t know,” the younger one stammered, voice breaking.
Bai Zihan’s expression didn’t change.
He had expected as much.
Still, he pressed on.
“Who ordered you?”
The older cultivator swallowed hard, throat moving as if forcing the words out.
“It was Elder Shuhai!”
“Elder Shuhai again,” Bai Zihan murmured, more to himself than to them.
Looks like he wasn’t on the level of other elders and definitely above them.
He continued questioning them-methodically.
“Is there anyone above Elder Shuhai?”
Silence!
“I… I don’t know,” one whispered. “Elder Shuhai is the highest rank person I
know!”
Bai Zihan tilted his head slightly, expression thoughtful.
Bai Zihan continued asking various questions but the answer left him unsatisfied. Either they didn’t know or it was information that Bai Zihan already
knew.
When the questioning ended, Bai Zihan looked at them both for a long, silent
moment.
Finally, he sighed.
“I see… it seems you really don’t know anything useful.”
Moreover, he couldn’t even tell whether they were lying or not.
(Should I ask Feilian to perform a Soul Search on them?)
That was an option, but doing so on Great Ascension Realm cultivators-who might not know anything-wasn’t worth spending her Qi.
Sigh!
Bai Zihan scrapped the idea of using Feilian; it simply wasn’t worth it.
Perhaps they would open their mouths after being tortured in the Bai Clan if
they are hiding something. He could only hope so.
“Who is the person that has fallen for Xie Wanshou?”
This made him realize just how crucial Xie Wanshou was-and how important
the person who took an interest in her must be.
Otherwise, even Great Ascension Realm elders were denied entry to the
headquarters or have their souls and memories tampered with.
A place so secretive yet Xie Wanshou was allowed in their headquarters though
she seemed to be blindfolded and had her senses closed.
Looks like it was back to square one. For now, he could only rely on Xie Wanshou and wait for that mysterious person to contact her.
Still, after this ordeal, he understood one thing clearly-the organization behind all this was terrifyingly powerful, to the point that even the Bai Clan might not
be able to face them directly.
He certainly couldn’t take them on with his current strength.
So, while waiting for information… he needed to grow stronger. Otherwise,
even if he did find their headquarters, he might not be able to exact his
revenge.
Bai Zihan began to walk away, he was truly leaving the place after having destroyed the palace.
The Emperor could only suppress the rising complaint in his heart.
At least Bai Zihan was leaving. The palace could be rebuilt, but life could not be
restored.
That alone was reason enough for gratitude.
