Chapter 493: Onward

The air inside the parade ground split open with the high-pitched screech of tearing metal as the Ashen Legate’s greatsword descended.

The ten-foot commander did not merely swing a piece of steel. It brought down a concentrated pillar of compressed, violent volcanic lightning. The blade left a trailing scar of blinding purple arcs and black spatial heat in its wake, accelerating so fast that the damp, ash-choked atmosphere ignited into a localized firestorm before the blow even reached waist height.

Kyle did not leap backward into the wet courtyard, nor did he call upon Seraphina or Falcon to intercept the strike.

He stood his ground, his dark boots rooted to the wet iron-wood floor. As the gargantuan greatsword came down, Kyle shifted his left leg back six inches, aligning his weight, and raised his pitch-black demon gauntlet at a sharp, forty-five-degree angle.

He didn’t block with the shadow blade in his right hand. He met the edge of the divine celestial steel with his bare, gauntleted left palm.

KA-THUUUUUUM!

The kinetic feedback of the collision detonated across the parade ground like an artillery shell. A flat, circular shockwave of white static and shattered iron-wood blasted outward, stripping the wet moss from the surrounding basalt walls and blowing back the torn black banners hanging from the high battlements.

Seraphina raised her ocean trident, instinctively expanding her water veil to shield Falcon and Yua from the flying splinters of black wood and iron shrapnel.

"He caught it..." Yua whispered, her red eyes widening slightly as her blood-lightning flickered around her knuckles. "He caught a ten-foot commander’s full swing with one hand..."

"It’s not raw physical strength," Falcon corrected, her golden eyes locked on Kyle’s gauntlet. Her four dark brown tails switched in a tense, tight pattern behind her back. "Look at his palm. He’s using the spatial ring to bleed the kinetic weight into the floor."

Where the greatsword met Kyle’s iron palm, no blood was drawn.

The Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger burned with a brilliant, deep-violet light. The pale-blue spatial lattice embedded in his Demon Knight core open-circuited the strike, absorbing eighty percent of the volcanic thunder into his secondary energy reservoir and shunting the remaining physical force straight down through his legs into the iron-wood planks beneath his boots. The floor around his feet cracked into a spiderweb of deep grooves, but Kyle’s upper frame remained completely immovable.

The Ashen Legate’s glowing visor flickered in genuine shock. "A spatial anchor... bound directly into a mortal frame...?"

"You had three hundred years to polish your sword," Kyle said softly, his slitted dark eyes looking straight through the slit of the Legate’s visor. "Is this all the weight it carries?"

Kyle flexed his gauntleted fingers, clamping his iron grip around the flat of the Legate’s giant blade.

With a sudden, explosive twist of his shoulders, Kyle dragged the ten-foot commander forward, throwing the giant construct completely off-balance. Before the Legate’s celestial steel boots could regain traction on the wet floor, Kyle stepped into the creature’s inner guard, bringing his shadow blade up in a dark, silent arc.

Void-Thunder Style: Second Form—Null Sever.

The sleek black blade didn’t hit the Legate’s heavy chest plate with a metallic clang. Coated in a dense layer of anti-elemental void energy, the shadow blade slid through the dark, iridescent celestial steel as if it were soft wax, driving straight through the central chest cavity where the Legate’s primary divine intent core hummed.

THUNK.

The Legate froze mid-stride.

The blinding violet beams shining from its visor dimmed, flickering like an oil lamp running out of wick. The massive greatsword slipped from its iron gauntlets, clattering heavily onto the shattered iron-wood floor with a loud, hollow thud.

Kyle didn’t rip the blade out violently. He held it still inside the chest cavity for three seconds, letting his Demon Knight core draw out the lingering, refined volcanic thunder from the Legate’s dying matrix, siphoning the energy directly into his spatial ring until the commander’s frame was completely drained of its power.

Slowly, Kyle drew the shadow blade back, stepping away as the ten-foot Ashen Legate fell to its knees.

The celestial steel armor didn’t explode or shatter like the lesser legionnaires. It remained whole, but the red-and-violet embers glowing through its joints slowly faded into soft grey ash.

The commander looked up at Kyle, its voice no longer booming with military authority, but carrying the quiet, hollow echo of a warrior finally relieved of a long, lonely shift.

"The key... is held by a true conqueror..." the Legate rumbled softly, its heavy horned head inclining in a deep, final bow. "The lower gates of Tier Three... are yours. Pass through... and reclaim the high peaks..."

With a final, soft hiss of escaping air, the light in the Legate’s visor went completely dark. The ten-foot construct locked into a permanent, kneeling posture in the center of the quiet parade ground, transformed into a silent steel monument to a forgotten age.

Seraphina lowered her trident, her water domain smoothly receding into her core. She walked over to Kyle’s side, her blue eyes scanning the quiet keep. "That was the primary defense force of the lower ridge. The path to the upper sanctuary is completely clear."

Yua walked over to the kneeling commander, tapping the thick celestial steel shoulder guard with her pale claw. "Not bad armor. If we had a blacksmith from the Lumia Keep here, they could forge a hundred high-tier shields out of this metal."

"Leave the steel," Kyle said, sheathing his dark shadow blade with a crisp, metallic click. "The kingdom has enough iron. What we need is speed."

Falcon stepped up to his left, her golden eyes scanning the far wall of the parade ground. "Look behind the dais, Kyle."

Where the Legate’s elevated stone throne had sat, the torn black banner had fallen to the ground, revealing a massive, arched passageway carved directly into the sheer basalt rock of the mountain. Unlike the cold, ash-draped ruins of the courtyard, the tunnel ahead was lined with smooth, glowing white marble tiles that radiated a gentle, warm light and a crisp, clean scent of high-altitude ozone.

"That’s the primary ascent corridor," Seraphina noted, stepping closer. "It leads straight through the spine of the mountain into the true Highlands of Tier Three."

"Let me guess," Yua grinned, resting her hands behind her neck. "More stairs?"

"No stairs," Kyle said, his slitted dark eyes tracking the spatial resonance pulsing from the tunnel. "It’s a linear transit corridor. The architects built it to connect the military garrison directly to the upper sanctuaries."

Kyle led the team past the kneeling iron Legate, stepping over the threshold and into the white marble corridor.

The transition from the cold, violent parade ground to the interior transit corridor was immediate.

The moment all four of them stepped onto the white marble tiles, a soft, pale-blue spatial barrier closed seamlessly behind them, shutting out the howling wind, the grey ash, and the damp smell of sulfur. The air inside the corridor was rich, clean, and warm, free from the wild electrical noise that had plagued the outer mountain slopes.

"Ah..." Falcon let out a quiet, relaxed breath, her four dark brown tails giving a soft, contented swish. "Now that is a relief. My fur was starting to smell like burnt coal."

"Don’t get too comfortable," Seraphina smiled faintly, though she too relaxed her shoulders slightly. "Linear corridors inside the Spire usually mean we’re crossing between major sub-sectors. We’re approaching the upper boundaries of Tier Three."

As they walked down the wide, marble-lined hallway, Kyle pulled up his internal interface.

’Snow, diagnostic report,’ Kyle commanded silently.

’Diagnostic active,’ Snow’s clear voice echoed in his mind. ’Host’s Demon Knight core stability: 100%. Lightning-Core Spatial Ring capacity: 42% filled with refined high-tier volcanic thunder and spatial kinetic energy. Party status: Seraphina, Falcon, and Yua have fully integrated their crucible-refined domains. Overall combat effectiveness: Increased by 28% compared to initial floor entry.’

’Map the transit corridor,’ Kyle instructed. ’Where does this exit?’

’Mapping linear corridor trajectory,’ Snow detailed, displaying a soft blue wireframe map across his retinas. ’This corridor spans three miles through the core of the volcanic peak. It terminates at the Highland Overlook—the gateway to the primary core matrix of Tier Three.’

Kyle lowered his hand, his eyes scanning the smooth marble walls as they walked.

Along the walls were intricate, carved bas-reliefs depicting the history of Tier Three before the Great Fall. They showed images of noble, winged architects working alongside tall, armored knights, building grand stone fortresses across floating islands of rock and sky. But as they walked deeper into the corridor, the carvings began to change.

The winged architects vanished, replaced by scenes of violent sky-war—gargantuan storm clouds tearing floating islands apart, massive beasts descending from dark spatial rifts, and knights falling into bottomless chasms.

"The story doesn’t change, does it?" Falcon said softly, her golden eyes following a carving of a shattered city falling through clouds. "No matter which floor we walk on, it’s always the same. They built something incredible, and then it fell apart from the inside."

"That’s the nature of power without a proper anchor," Seraphina said, her voice quiet and reflective. "When you reach the heights of divinity, a single mistake in judgment doesn’t just ruin a life—it breaks a realm."

"Which is why you don’t build realms on fragile emotions," Kyle said flatly, his voice grounded, heavy, and absolute.

He didn’t look at the tragic carvings on the walls. He kept his eyes locked straight ahead, where the white marble hallway began to curve upward toward a brilliant, golden light shining at the end of the tunnel.

"Tempest built his domain on pride. Eros built his on attachment," Kyle continued, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. "When the storm hit, pride made Tempest destroy his own people, and attachment made Eros abandon his post. If you want to survive the Spire, your core can’t depend on either."

Yua looked at Kyle’s sharp, unyielding profile, a small, genuine smirk touching her lips. "And what’s your core built on, boss?"

Kyle stopped at the end of the marble corridor, right at the threshold of the open archway leading out into the light.

He didn’t turn around, but his voice carried a calm, unbreakable clarity that settled over all three of them.

"On making sure my team walks out alive," Kyle said simply. "And making sure the people behind us never have to see the sky fall."

Seraphina offered a quiet, radiant smile, while Falcon chuckled softly, her four dark brown tails giving a light, proud swish. Yua cracked her knuckles, her red eyes sparkling with fierce, unshakeable loyalty.

Kyle stepped out of the tunnel and onto the Highland Overlook.

The view that greeted them took their breath away.

They were standing on a gargantuan, semicircular terrace carved from white celestial marble, projecting out over the very peak of Tier Three.

Below them, the sea of grey fog and volcanic ash had completely vanished. Instead, they looked out over a vast, endless ocean of bright golden clouds that stretched as far as the eye could see, illuminated by three brilliant, silver moons floating in a crystal-clear indigo sky.

Rising straight through the center of the golden cloud ocean was the grandest structure they had seen yet—a colossal, floating spire of pale-gold crystal and white marble, towering thousands of feet into the sky. It was anchored to the terrace by four massive, glowing chains of pure spatial energy that hummed with a deep, harmonious frequency.

Floating directly above the central platform of the overlook was a massive, ancient portal ring forged from silver and sapphire—the master gate leading straight into Tier Four.

"The Highland Overlook..." Seraphina whispered, her azure hair catching the cool, clear mountain breeze. "It’s pristine..."

"No decay up here," Falcon added, her golden eyes reflecting the brilliant silver moonlight. "The corruption below never reached this peak."

Kyle walked to the edge of the celestial marble terrace, looking up at the gargantuan golden spire floating in the sky.

He felt the Spire Key inside his core hum in perfect, absolute harmony with the four spatial chains anchoring the floating structure. The atmospheric pressure here was clean, dense, and hyper-refined, filling his meridians with a steady, revitalizing energy that completely washed away the fatigue of their climb.

He raised his right gauntlet, slipping his fingers into his dark coat to pull out the master key’s spatial pulse.

HUMMMMMMMMM...

The silver-and-sapphire portal ring hovering above the terrace ignited with a brilliant beam of pale-blue and golden light, opening a wide, stable gateway into the higher tiers of the Spire.

Kyle turned to face Seraphina, Falcon, and Yua.

Their clothes were dusted with the ash of the lower ridge, their weapons were tried by the guardians of the past, but their eyes were bright, their cores were strong, and their resolve was completely unbroken.

"Tier Three is cleared," Kyle declared flatly, his dark coat sweeping around his calves as he turned toward the glowing master gateway. "The path to Tier Four is open."

"Lead the way, Kyle," Seraphina said softly, raising her ocean trident in a silent salute.

"Let’s go conquer the next floor," Yua grinned, stepping up beside him.

Falcon smiled, her four dark brown tails flaring with a soft, energetic green flame as she stepped beside Yua. "Right behind you, boss."
