Chapter 79: An Ambush!

Chapter 79: An Ambush!

Although the Whiteleaf Forest was formed by the C-rank dungeon, Bleachwood Hollow, as Professor Kael said, the forest wasn’t that dangerous.

At least on the outskirts where they were, Soren and his team found monsters with a level 20 to 25 max until now, and maybe their level might increase to 30, nearing the camp.

Clearly, the professors thought about the students and limited the level of monsters and dangers in this area.

But that also meant some students with a higher level would be able to easily take advantage of this situation.

Although it was still due to those students’ capabilities, Soren felt that they might have also thought about giving a challenge to students like him.

*Growl!*

Otherwise, why the hell would their team suddenly be surrounded by a pack of wolves larger and darker than the one they just killed before?

’I didn’t even notice until they were too close.’

Soren thought, his eyes scanning the area ahead. By now, his team members had already noticed that they were completely surrounded.

Surrounded by dozens of wolves twice the size of the Shadowfang they killed just now.

Especially the one in front, who was slowly walking toward them out of the trees, with its crimson, murderous eyes focused on their team.

[Name: Phantom Wolf]

[Race: Beast]

[Level: 40]

[Rank: D]

[HP: 5,450 / 5,450]

[Special Traits: Alpha’s Veil – Conceals the scent and tracks of pack members, greatly reducing the chance of detection or tracing.]

[Note: Evolved form of Shadowfang Wolf]

’No wonder I couldn’t sense it. Such a unique trait…is this a skill only a born hunter could have?’

Soren thought in surprise.

A leader who could conceal its pack entirely with a skill like this was an absolute menace, no matter how he looked at it.

Not to mention its level, which was as high as forty. Fortunately, only the leader was at that level.

*Roar!*

Unfortunately, Soren didn’t have time to muse over much, as the moment his eyes met the leader, it let out a deafening roar that thundered through the entire forest.

*Swish!*

In an instant, a dozen wolves surrounded them, moving with terrifying precision.

Their eyes gleamed with hunger as their growls echoed through the forest.

Simultaneously, thick dark shadows burst from the feet of the leading wolf, spreading rapidly and engulfing the entire battlefield in an instant, cloaking everything in darkness.

Immidiatley, their visibility dropped sharply.

Only pairs of crimson eyes glimmered within the shadows, filled with murderous intent. At the same time, a suffocating heaviness pressed down on every member of the group.

If this were a dungeon, Soren was certain the Voice of the World would have already announced that they were under some kind of debuff.

“Purification!”

Fortunately, Sylvia’s skill still worked flawlessly, instantly dispelling the weakening effect from everyone.

However, the thick darkness surrounding them still remained untouched.

“Come forth, my summons: Stone Golems!”

Fortunately, they were already used to fighting, so none of the members panicked.

As the wolves closed in, Aria Luna lifted her hand, a brilliant glow emanating from one of her rings.

In a heartbeat, four massive Stone Golems erupted from the ground, their stone limbs thudding against the earth as they formed an unyielding wall around the team.

*Swish!*

Simultaneously, a streak of blinding sword light shot from behind.

The wolves barely had time to react before it sliced through the air, aiming straight for the head of one unfortunate beast, ready to cleave it clean in two.

*Roar!*

But before the sword could strike, a dark flame shot out from the leader’s claw, intercepting it with deadly precision and saving the wolf from being cleaved.

However, this also managed to draw its agro to Evan, whose muscles had already swelled abnormally, his sword shining bright even in the darkness.

“Blazing Purge!”

Not to mention the overwhelming surge of fire that began to spurt out of Aurelia’s staff, directly brightening the entire shadow cloaking around and restoring vision.

“Crimson Inferno!”

Simultaneously, her AOE skill attacked the same wolf Evan had targeted before, directly engulfing it in the fiery inferno.

Even with its high level and agility, it could not escape Aurelia’s spell before letting out a painful howl, its body totally wounded.

*Roar!*

While being surrounded, the other team might have tried to escape the encirclement, but Soren’s team attacked first, catching the wolves off guard.

In an instant, the battle began between their team and the Phantom Wolves.

“Heaven’s Cleaver!”

Evan, with his incredible sword skill, directly began attacking the leading wolf, while Aurelia used her Inferno to purge the measly sidekicks that dared to pounce.

Aria used her Stone Golems and Elderwood Sentinels to perfectly encircle them into a defensive form, while Sylvia began using her buff-type skills, reducing cooldowns and strengthening her teammates.

Everyone began to work in such tandem that they did not look like a group that had been caught off guard and surrounded at all.

Rather, despite being on the defensive, they were already ahead of the Phantom Wolves.

No matter how high their agility and stealth ability were, if their prey did not run and encircle themselves in a defensive circle, they would be hard-pressed to do anything.

Not to mention, there was someone in their team who could see through even their stealth and strike despite the wolves’ high agility.

*Tempest Arrow!*

For the first time ever, Soren unleashed his class-specific skill, standing atop one of the Stone Golems.

*Whoosh!*

The arrow, imbued with the power of wind, tore through the air like a raging gale, spinning and slicing as if it carried the fury of a storm.

True to its name, the Tempest Arrow shot straight into the shadows, seeking out its target with uncanny precision, like a missile.

In an instant, it pierced one of the Phantom Wolves directly through the eyes, dispelling its concealed form and slicing through its skull, killing it before it could even react.

Even after piercing the wolf, the arrow ripped through the air like a raging gale, striking with such force that it splintered the thick trunk of a nearby ancient tree, sending chunks of bark and wood crashing to the ground.

Leaves, dust, and debris were hurled into a violent whirlwind, the wind howling like a storm, as if the battlefield itself had been struck by a tempest.

Truly, his class name, Tempest Strider, wasn’t just for show.

*Roar!*

But that didn’t mean the wolves were scared. Rather, this only managed to anger them even more.

Especially the leader, whose attention immediately snapped to Soren, its murderous eyes letting out dark flame.

*Swish!*

Then, to Evan’s surprise, it suddenly disappeared from its position like a shadow, before emerging from beneath the Golem and swiping its massive claw at Soren’s head.

It was so fast that the moment Soren’s arrow landed, he hadn’t even lowered his bow before the massive claw came at him.

*Boom!*

Unfortunately for the leader, before its claw could even touch Soren, he was hurled off the Golem’s shoulder by large vines that appeared out of nowhere.

*Crick!*

So, its massive dark claws only managed to strike the Stone Golems, shattering one in an instant.

“Heaven’s Cleaver!”

But that was only a small part of its misfortune, as it suddenly saw yet another wolf from its pack have its head cleaved cleanly by a sword strike, blood spraying like a fountain.

“Pyro Spear!”

Another of its own was pierced by the flaming lance, incinerating its heart.
