Chapter 2279: Chapter 2280: My Cousin Is a Capitalist Heiress 97
After attending Zhang Fu’s funeral, Zhang Yu started getting ready to go back with Qian Hao.
Zhang Tao thought for a moment and called out to Zhang Yu, "Little Yu, now that Mom and Dad are gone, come back and sit for a bit. The things Mom and Dad left behind, we siblings can divide them among the four of us."
Their things? Zhang Yu shook her head. "I don’t need them."
"But you’ve also been sending them money all these years." Zhang Tao tried his best to persuade her, hoping Zhang Yu would still come back, at least for a while.
"They did give birth to me after all, taking care of them was my responsibility." Why would Zhang Yu say that? Simply because she didn’t want the whole Zhang Family swarming her again to drain her dry in all sorts of ways.
"Now that they’re gone, I have completely no connection to this place anymore. And I’m guessing Mom and Dad already gave the house to you guys long ago."
"As for anything valuable, that must have been divided up ages ago." Everyone in the Zhang Family knew she studied law, so of course they wouldn’t give her a chance to get her hands on any family assets.
"You... you’re not going to come back ever again?" Zhang Tao’s voice was trembling. Before this, he’d still been thinking that since they were siblings born of the same mother, and so much time had passed, their relationship would slowly get better.
Of course, the premise was that Zhang Yu was still willing to deal with them. Looking at her now, she probably wasn’t, right?
Zhang Yu shook her head. "I haven’t come back in many years. Even if I’m on a business trip, as long as I can avoid coming here, I won’t set foot here."
"In this place, I don’t have any good memories, only unbearable ones."
"With my parents’ death, my last tie to this family is completely gone."
"As for paying respects at their graves, judging from how they talked, I don’t think they’d want this ’unfilial daughter’ of theirs to show up at their tombs anyway."
"You guys being there is enough." Zhang Yu turned and left. After sweeping his gaze over them, Qian Hao also turned and walked away.
Once they were in the car, Qian Hao curled his lip. "Every last one of them is scheming, and none of them ever thought about properly educating the next generation."
"They’re used to getting something for nothing. My parents spent years hoping Zhang Hui’s parents would come back—take Zhang Hui away and at the same time leave behind a generous thank‑you gift."
"After all, when they left back then, they didn’t just leave Zhang Hui behind, they also left a sizeable payment." Zhang Yu knew Zhang Fu and his wife didn’t have much hope for Zhang Tao and the others, precisely because they had this stash as their confidence.
Who would’ve thought things would change so fast. Back then you needed coupons to buy everything, and what the Ge Family left them wasn’t just money, but things that could cost them their lives. They could only hide them away and didn’t dare use them at all.
They struggled through the movements and then came reform and opening‑up. They wanted to dig out what they’d hidden underground, only to find the stash was gone.
This completely crushed them. All those years of longing, all that tiptoeing around, all that extra kindness toward Zhang Hui were for the sake of those things—only to discover they were gone.
"Payment?" Qian Hao asked curiously.
"From what I overheard back then, when the Ge Family left, they didn’t know when they’d be back. Worried that my parents wouldn’t treat Zhang Hui well, they left behind a whole trunk of jewelry."
"They never said exactly what was in there, just that it was very valuable." As for those pieces, anything Zhang Yu could ’wash clean’ she had long since laundered and used openly; anything she couldn’t whitewash she kept in her space, saved for the next mission—or simply as something to remember.
"Then they definitely wouldn’t dare use them all those years. But after things opened up, they could take them out, right?" Qian Hao still didn’t understand. "But from what I see, they aren’t particularly rich."
Since it was valuable stuff, it should’ve been enough to buy property or something. Looking at Zhang Tao and Zhang Bin, neither of them seemed to be living in especially spacious housing.
Of course Zhang Yu knew why they hadn’t improved their living conditions—it wasn’t that they didn’t want to, they just couldn’t.
"I don’t know the specifics. I only heard Zhang Juan mention once that there was a period when their moods were really unstable, muttering that ’something’s gone.’"
"You know Zhang Juan doesn’t have any status at home. With something that big, she wouldn’t be in the loop."
"But my guess is, with a high probability, the stuff disappeared. As for the exact reason, I don’t know."
"Otherwise there’s no way they wouldn’t buy Zhang Tao and the others apartments. And that dear Second Aunt of mine who doted on Zhang Hui wouldn’t have refused to buy a place for Zhang Hui either."
Zhang Hui could only spread her hands helplessly. "After that, I knew my parents’ relationship with Second Uncle’s family wasn’t good anymore. Most likely they figured the other side had taken the stash."
"But even if those things were still around, they’d have nothing to do with me. There wasn’t a single cent of it meant for me."
"Mm, maybe Zhang Juan would get a bit, but not much. They’re hardcore believers in ’son over daughter.’"
"They know I’ve made something of myself; there’s no way they’d say what Zhang Tao claimed, that they were proud of me."
"I can practically hear the old couple talking. They must feel that the more successful I am, the more I’ve stolen the blessings that should belong to the Zhang Family."
"Otherwise how do you explain so many sons and grandsons in the Zhang Family, and not a single one turned out well?"
"In their hearts, this daughter of theirs is someone with bad grades who’s useless at everything she does." Zhang Juan would never say such things, but as for who Zhang Yu was—she understood Zhang Fu and his wife inside out and could easily guess their thoughts.
Even though everyone knew Zhang Yu had always been strong, and no one thought she needed comforting—hence the nickname Iron Lady—in Qian Hao’s eyes his wife needed to be cherished. He reached out and held her hand. "In my heart, you’re the best there is."
"That’s right, I am the best. But when my dad died, I actually breathed a sigh of relief." Zhang Yu herself felt nothing for Zhang Fu, but when she heard the news of his death and felt her body and mind relax uncontrollably, she knew that was the original host’s reaction. Otherwise she truly wouldn’t have shown up at Zhang Fu’s funeral.
Right before boarding the train, she turned to take one last look, then got on and headed north. From then on, for the rest of her life, she never came back here again. Whether it was Zhang Tao and his wife or Zhang Bin and his wife passing away, whenever she got the news she’d just send back "My condolences" and that was the end of it.
When news of Zhang Juan’s death reached Zhang Yu, she arranged for her granddaughter, who was on vacation at home, to attend the funeral.
As for Zhang Hui, she had already died before Zhang Tao. She’d worked as a nanny for many years and indeed earned enough to see her into old age, but the lack of rest, the nonstop grind every single day, had done serious damage to her Jiankang.
Even more importantly, her unhappy life and the constant coveting of her assets by the descendants of Zhang Li and Zhang Qiang left her in terrible psychological shape. She lived in constant fear that someone would harm her, and in that state of perpetual anxiety, she died in her seventies.
When the news of Zhang Hui’s death reached Zhang Yu, her whole body felt light. She knew the original host had finally completely departed.
For the rest of her years, she and Qian Hao traveled all over the country, and of course with Zhao Yadong, who had handed his businesses over to his son to manage. The three of them, with a driver, roamed from mountain to river, and only at eighty did they return to the first siheyuan they’d bought in the Capital City to retire.
In the moment she closed her eyes, what Zhang Yu thought of wasn’t "Another mission completed," but that after this mission she would have to rest properly for a while. She was simply too exhausted.
