Tristan didn’t celebrate just yet. Well... he permitted himself a tiny, deeply satisfying smirk as Oliver’s heavy spatial bag settled into his hand. Watching the arrogant noble get crushed and banished from the exam was a therapeutic bonus, but reality crashed back down in the form of a nine-foot-tall, blood-soaked Fallen beast.

The echoing corridor fell into a suffocating quiet, broken only by the clattering of Oliver’s abandoned polearm and the wet, labored breathing of the monster. The air absolutely reeked of blood and a small resembling a wet dog.

With Oliver gone, the Minotaur’s burning, violet eyes turned directly toward Tristan.

Right now, Tristan had two options. One: run as fast as he could and try to reach the center circle fifty yards down the hall. Two: fight the minotaur.

There were pros and cons to both options. Option one was relatively safe, practical, and guaranteed a staggering haul of essence stones to secure a really good entrance ranking. Option two... actually, there weren’t many pros to option two. He was exhausted, his essence pool was nearly empty, his body felt like it had been trampled, and he was wielding a simple steel dagger against a Fallen-class beast.

Tristan tensed his legs and mind, getting ready to absolutely bolt it. His muscles coiled, his eyes locking onto the distant line of safety. But right as he was about to throw himself into a sprint, he paused.

His boots remained rooted to the cold stone floor.

’Why am I stopping?’ Tristan thought, a sudden, heavy chill settling in his gut. ’The smart move is right there. Run, steal, win the exam. That’s how you play the game.’

He stared at the towering shadow looming before him. The Minotaur was staggering, its left leg badly mangled from Oliver’s desperate final strike, thick black blood pooling on the limestone beneath its hooves. It was wounded, bleeding profusely, and noticeably exhausted, holding its massive greataxe with only one trembling hand.

’Game knowledge can only do so much,’ Tristan realized, his grip tightening around the hilt of his dagger until his knuckles turned white.

Ever since he woke up in this brutal world, he had played it safe. He had hidden behind different facades of safety, from the image of the "frail puzzle master" to exploiting the dungeon guards and letting teammates take the brunt of the traps. He had calculated every risk and relied heavily on his memories of Flamecrest to bash through most obstacles like an invisible puppeteer.

But this wasn’t a game anymore. The moment his knowledge lapsed or ran dry, he was a goner. The Verneuil main branch didn’t care about clever cowards who barely survived by running. In a clan built on ruthless strategic meritocracy, a man who only survived by fleeing would eventually be discarded. He had to push beyond.

’I’ve spent this entire exam leeching off others, waiting for the perfect moment to play it safe’ Tristan thought, a dark, reckless smile slowly spreading across his soot-stained face. ’If I run now, I’m just another survivor... and I didn’t come back to life for just that.’

The Minotaur let out a weak, furious bellow and raised its heavy greataxe, dragging its crippled leg forward over the cracked stone.

If he wanted to break his limits and turn [Reave] into a power that could shatter the world, he couldn’t play it safe anymore. He needed to take the ultimate gamble.

Tristan unbuckled the spatial pouch and shoved his hand directly into the pile of raw stones, feeling the icy, thrumming energy radiating off the crystal surfaces. He opened his empty, aching core to full suction. He didn’t gently filter the energy this time; he opened the floodgates and violently devoured all ninety-two essence stones in a single fell swoop.

A violent surge of unrefined magical force ruptured through his soul. The sheer volume of raw, unchanneled power felt like liquid fire, expanding rapidly through his chest and burning through his pathways. Tristan fell to one knee, coughing blood onto the cobblestones as his absolute 100-essence ceiling didn’t only fill, but shattered like cheap glass.

The agony was agonizingly brief, quickly replaced by a cool, immense sensation as his core expanded into a vast, unyielding reservoir. The bottleneck broke under the sheer hydraulic pressure of the swallowed stones.

[Rank: Tempered]

[Core Capacity: 132 / 5,000 Essence]

His essence pool refilled rapidly, a powerful, invigorating current pulsing back through his aching limbs and knitting together his bruised ribs. But the true shift wasn’t just his essence pool, it was in his perception.

The world around Tristan suddenly unfolded into distinct, vibrant layers of conceptual threads. Through his evolved [Reave], physical reality lost its dull solidity. The structural hardness of the stone walls flared in his vision like bright, silver wires crisscrossing the corridor, so clear and defined he felt he could reach out and pluck them with his bare fingers without effort.

Glancing at a broken steel shield discarded near Oliver’s polearm, he could vaguely discern a faint, shimmering golden haze radiating off its curved surface. He was seeing the abstract concept of [Protection]. He was beginning to grasp the subtle intent forged into physical objects, rather than just their surface-level physical traits.

Tristan raised his eyes to the Minotaur. For the first time, he could see thick, turbulent rivers of dark violet essence violently coursing through the monster’s muscles and bone like corrupted ley-lines. The beast’s core concepts were still far too massive and dense for Tristan to be able to rip away with his current authority, but the monster was no longer an unreadable wall of death.

It was a living tapestry held together by visible, flowing energy, and its crippled left leg was practically screaming with frayed, chaotic violet light.

A dark, reckless smile spread across Tristan’s soot-stained face as he twirled his steel dagger, the weapon gleaming in the dim torchlight.

"Alright, big guy," Tristan murmured, stepping directly into the shadow of the looming, furious beast. "Let’s see what a Tempered core can actually do."
