Chapter 611: Fortunately, There Is a Sensible Person

"What’s the point of reasoning with people like that? Just beat them up." Goldie Thorne was furious, in no mood to talk.

Frederick Thorne glared at him. "So you beat them up and let off some steam, but then what about Phoebe’s life after that? Use your head when things happen! With that temper of yours, you’re bound to suffer for it sooner or later. You have to change!"

Tang Xiaonan nodded repeatedly. ’Second Uncle couldn’t be more right. Goldie Thorne’s downfall was his explosive temper. He ended up in prison, and when the Thorne family fell, Goldie was still locked up.’

"I’ll go talk to Old Sixth."

Byron Thorne agreed with Frederick. Violence wouldn’t solve the problem; they needed to negotiate.

Byron Thorne didn’t return from Shane Thorne’s place until late at night. The next day, he announced the plan.

"Your Sixth Uncle said we should try courtesy before resorting to force. Tomorrow, we’ll pay a visit to the Chapman family. Phoebe, you’ll come too, and bring Allister. Let the Chapmans see that she’s just given them another big, healthy grandson. She’s earned her keep through both merit and hard work. If there’s anyone with a shred of sense in that family, they won’t let Brian Chapman go too far."

After talking with Shane Thorne for most of the night, Byron Thorne felt much more clear-headed. Old Sixth really was a seasoned man of the world who saw things with such clarity. Phoebe had just given birth to a son, which put her in a strong position. What was there to be afraid of!

"So, does Sixth Uncle agree to the divorce?" Goldie Thorne was still fixated on the idea. He thought divorce was the best solution.

He was making good money now, enough to support his sister, so he wasn’t worried about her getting a divorce.

But the three children were a problem. His sister would never want to be separated from them, and he didn’t trust a stepmother to raise them. He’d lost sleep over it last night. ’Ugh... This is so frustrating.’

Byron Thorne frowned slightly and said in a low voice, "Your Sixth Uncle’s opinion is that a divorce is necessary, but not right now. He says Phoebe should bear with it a little longer. The best thing to do is to catch Brian Chapman fooling around and get evidence. Then we can take him to court and hire a good lawyer. That way, Brian Chapman will be the party at fault, and we can fight for custody of the children. But even then, we could at most get Amanda and Allister. The Chapman family will never let Gentry go."

In truth, he didn’t approve of the divorce. But Old Sixth had said that Phoebe was already settling when she married Brian Chapman, and it would be wrong to make her suffer for the rest of her life. There was even a hint of blame toward him in those words, which made Byron Thorne feel uncomfortable.

Back then, he had married his daughter off to Brian Chapman because he was taken with the man’s stable job. Who would have known that someone who looked so honest and dependable would turn out to be a philanderer—and a heartless one at that? He regretted it now.

But he was still worried about a divorce. He was afraid his daughter wouldn’t be able to get by with two children. Goldie could help her out now, but he would have to get married sooner or later. If he kept supporting Phoebe, even the best daughter-in-law would eventually cause a fuss.

While he and his old lady were still alive, things would be manageable; they could keep their daughter-in-law in line. But once they closed their eyes for good, Phoebe’s life would become difficult.

’But Old Sixth was right. Staying married would be a real nightmare. That ugly bastard Brian Chapman is nowhere near good enough for my beautiful daughter. It makes my blood boil!’

Tang Xiaonan’s eyes lit up. ’Sixth Grand-uncle is absolutely right. He really is an educated man; his plan is so much more sophisticated.’

"Then let’s do what Sixth Uncle said. I know a few guys over in Wraven. I’ll get them to catch Brian Chapman in the act. Once we blow this thing wide open, we’ll see how the Chapman family can still show their faces! I’ll make sure he loses that stable job of his!" Goldie Thorne’s expression turned vicious.

He was an expert at catching cheaters. He’d even managed to catch a sly vixen like Phoenix Golding; a moron like Brian Chapman would be even easier.
