Chapter 76: 76 Golden.

Rhea, who was the standard definition of difficult, had her head against my shoulder as I drove back to the manor.

My fingers tensed against the steering just thinking about all the trouble I just knew was coming.

But as the crown slicked down the bridge, the pressure on the bridge changed, the cans on the floor began to rattle as I looked out the window and saw a streak of golden past the sky.

"Oh, great. Fucking Golden Boy." I muttered as the streak dipped down and crashed in front of the road.

Luckily I was already parked but the crater created by the golden idiot jumped Rhea awake and caused a mild collision down the road.

I killed the engine and waited for him to crawl out of the gouge he made and just cost thousands of taxpayer dollars, but whatever, it was Golden Boy.

He stepped out of the crater. Again dusting himself off like he knew quite learnt how to land right which was total bullshit, but it fits the easygoing persona.

The first thing that irritated me was his sunglasses that caught the light in my eyes. Then the grey black suit with golden inlays along the seams.

Oh, and he had golden skin and hair too.

Through the clatter of civvies yelling at him for causing a traffic, destroying the road and almost killing them he raised his hands and said. "No pictures please, I am only a man."

Fucking typical Golden Boy.

Hands on his hips. Then his eyes locked back onto my Crown. "Have a minute to chat?"

Oh fuuuuuck.

"Why is Golden Boy talking to you, Miles?" Rhea asked me, worry evident in her voice.

I didn’t look to her. It was an incredibly long story that I intentionally wanted to just forget but he could never quite let it go. "Don’t worry. And stay in the car."

A history I do not want to relive. See Golden Boy’s the son of Extraordinary—if you don’t remember him then shame on you, he’s the number one hero in the country.

And as such he had quite a big pair of jockstraps to fill in, the industry couldn’t let a villain get the upper hand on the country’s greatest hero’s son.

So they required a service—my services. A discreet, freelance, well-known villain for hire.

One that knew how to make the fight look just as good as the lost. The problem was later.

See, the fight went perfectly. Lacey walked away with a hefty paycheck, I with a decent sum and Golden with a name on the rise and a debut A-list hero.

But he wanted more. He wanted something personal—not a relationship, an arch. Well, I couldn’t say an arch wasn’t a relationship, I mean have you seen Joker and Batman.

Regardless, I digress. I didn’t want to be tied to anyone much less someone as high profile as Golden, but I get his feelings were hurt and he crashed a couple of my jobs.

It wasn’t unheard of in this business. To civvies it looked like the hero showed up right in time, to the two people who planned this, it looked like a major fuck up.

We handled it. Still said no to his offer but at that point he now knew who I was and had a personal vendetta against me.

So yeah, just like the mob this job can be just as messy.

I unhooked my seatbelt and stepped out of the car. "Golden Boy, to what do I owe the pleasure?" I said quite well noticing the amount of civilians around us.

"What happened in that lecture room, Miles?" He asked me though I couldn’t place his eyes through the shades.

"I have a friend who used to go there and wanted to come back for the convention, is that illegal?"

"No. But a villain fleeing the scene of a convention after killing two monsters does raise some suspicions does it not?"

"Civvie." I said as I leaned back against the hood of my car. "Not a villain. Not in costume. Have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m Miles. Civilian."

He placed a finger on the bridge of his glasses and brought it down slightly, just enough for me to see his deep amber eyes. "That’s the story you’re going with?"

"I still have no idea what you’re talking about Golden." I scoffed. "Sure the coke isn’t getting to you?"

That did it. He blasted towards me in a flash. Literally took fast to see but the next second was in front of me with his hands in his pockets and face in a scowl.

He expected a flinch or maybe even a charge of my powers but I just sat there and met his eyes. "Think about what you do next, Golden." I said, glancing at the side to notice civvies whispering. "Unless you want to explain to the BSA what’s going on here, back down."

"You think you’re too good for me?"

"Good God. I’m not you’re boyfriend, Golden." I placed a hand on his shoulder. "Look," I looked in his eyes with all the sincerity I could muster. "I’m sure there’s some lucky guy—or girl—out there who’ll be happy to face you, unfortunately, that person isn’t me. And it’s not you, it’s me. I’m just not ready for that sort of commitment."

My hand stayed on his shoulder even as he glared daggers at it, started to feel I’d made a mistake when his body started to heat up.

Slowly at first but it wasn’t slowing down, to the point where his skin began to glow and his eyes shone through the shades like molten gold.

Noticing the civvies starting to bring out their phones, I smiled and through clenched teeth whispered to him. "Think this through, Golden."

"Oh my God!!" Rhea popped her head out of the car with all the enthusiasm of a deranged fan girl. "It really is Golden Boy!!"

She slid out of the car and walked over to him, phone tucked near her chest as she found a way to slide in between us—smart girl.

"Oh my God!" She jumped onto the Gold-Plated Douchebag and wrapped her hands around him in a forced hug. "This is the greatest day of my life. Can I get a picture?"

Golden looked confused for a second but as Rhea batted her dog lashes at him he let his penis do the thinking. "Of course!" He screamed so everyone could hear. "Anything for a fan!"

She dragged him close for a picture and in seconds the rest of the civvies standing by were already walking towards us.

Caught in the chaos and cacophony of cameras flashes we managed to slip out into the car and down the road.

Fucking Golden Boy.
