Chapter 57: 57 Showtime.

One of the major differences between what I did now and the mob was, ironically, freelance villainy was more organised than being in the mob.

There was always a time and a place for everything. Everything was supposed to be planned down to the most minute detail.

So as I sat atop one of the numerous apartments complex’s rooftop, legs crossed, sunglasses on to stop the harsh glare of the sun I couldn’t help but think about the plan.

I’ve told you about bank robberies, gallery heists and just plain old terrorism, but they’re a lot more missions a villain can do.

For example?

Abduction.

Villains would kidnap a high ranking government official and demand millions, if not billions of dollars just for their release—amd for the real evil ones, they’d still kill the official.

There were only two options for freelancers though. Either the official knew, was in on it and has a cut, or you don’t tell them just to get the look of genuine terror in their eye.

Not telling them wasn’t always the smartest idea, because some people’s flight, fight or free was taking at your face and eyes until you dropped them.

But today we were risking it all and going with the later. Even from here I could still here the sound of cars zooming off down below.

The target was simply Alex Davis, recently elected city council president and unknowing suspect of my latest job.

I clicked on the comm in my ear. "Hear anything, Steve?" I asked still looking at the sky.

"Nope. Car’s about fifteen to twenty minutes out so you still got some time before they get there." Steve replied swiftly.

Always helpful since he could be in six different locations and once checking we’re the car was and determining the routes it would take.

Fifteen minutes was about enough time for me to eat something though. I peeled back the wrapper of the flaxseed bar in my pocket but before I could take a bite I felt someone climbing up the fire escape.

My back immediately shot up from the beach lounger and looked as a lady emerged from the railing.

Blond, blue-eyed and wearing a ridiculous get up for climbing up a fire escape.

The suit was practically painted onto her.

It was a sleek, skin-tight thing in deep crimson, with gleaming gold panels tracing her shoulders, sides, waist, and thighs, and a sword hanging at her hip.

The material hugged every curve without a wrinkle or fold, leaving very little to the imagination and absolutely nothing to hide the athletic figure underneath.

Her waist looked impossibly narrow beneath the gold trim, widening into powerful hips and long, shapely legs before disappearing into a pair of matching red-and-gold boots.

The high-cut design emphasized the length of her legs, while the fitted material across her chest made it painfully obvious that whoever designed the costume had understood exactly what people would be looking at.

It was a superhero suit in the technical sense.

In practice, it was a very convincing argument against looking anywhere else.

"Urrr..." I pointed at her with my flaxseed bar. "Who are you supposed to be?"

She flipped her hair behind her before placing her hands on her hips dramatically. "I am Divina. Child of Artemis herself. I am here to deliver justice to those who plot evil. And you are one of them."

What the fuck?!

I stared at her wide-eyed for a second longer than necessary, just trying to make sure she was actually clinically insane.

"Look, lady..." I finally spoke up, folding my glasses and sliding them back in my pants. "I think you have the wrong person. I’m Miles and I live in this building."

Technically a lie but I wasn’t in costume and this was absolutely not the villain I was sent to fight, so at this point I’m trying to de escalate the situation.

"Lies!" She screamed, walking towards my chair and whipping out her sword. "Your trickery does not work on me, mortal. My mother prepared me for the likes of men."

At this point, she had me pressed up against the chair and hoping she was honestly just mistaken, because otherwise someone had found out who I was.

"I’m just Miles—" I flinched as she poked the tip of the sword closer to my neck. "Hey, lady. What the hell do you think you’re doing?!"

"All shall face justice under the blade of Divina." She hissed. "Including you, Polaris."

Fuck. She definitely knew who I was.

Then it bode the question of how exactly did she find that out, how did she know where I’d be and most importantly, how stupid was she to point a blade at someone she knew had magnetism powers.

All the surprise in my face dropped away as I flicked my wrist and sent the sword flying out her hand and clattering against the floor.

I switched my eyes back at her and she seemed genuinely surprised. "Huzzah!" She said triumphantly. "It really is you. Now you shall know my smite."

"Wait a minute," I stood up from the chair, swallowing her in my shadow instantly. "You weren’t sure it was me and you put a sword to my throat?

"What exactly was your bright idea if I was just an ordinary person, or just some with magnetic powers?"

"I—You—It’s..." She stumbled over half sentences before finally deciding on. "I am Divina and you, a mere criminal, have no right to judge me."

She jumped back lightly, staring me down as she headed to pick up her sword again and assuming a fighting stance. "So... " She asked, eyes narrowed. "Are you surrendering or shall I take your head off your neck."

Before I could answer Steve was in my ear. "Car’s a minute away. Two armoured vehicles surrounding it and press heavy in your area."

"Perfect." I smiled and was done indulging Divina just like that.

I held her by her metal belt and neckpiece cowl and hovered her into the air.

"Unhand me you bastard!" She screamed at me and I happily obliged.

I flung her off the side of the building to where the dumpster was, carefully enough to shut the lid and scrunch it tight enough I wouldn’t have to worry about her for this.

I dusted my hands off done with that and turned my attention to the convoy barreling down the street.

"Showtime."
