Chapter 354: They Counted Dinner Before Offering the Pressure a Home

  • Next Chapter

The covered catch moved again before anyone touched the scale.

Nera kept the western fold slack. Olan removed the shore weight from the scale pan but left it across the access rail. Black-Crown’s north pair and Split-Beak’s south pair held separate release ties.

Nera opened the prepared pocket by one hand-width. One narrow silver fish pushed its head through, turned, and withdrew. A second body struck the fold behind it.

"Two visible," she said. "Count stays open."

Olan raised only his side of the pocket. The north pair slackened its float under Black-Crown’s call. The south pair waited for Split-Beak, then matched the opening without taking the north count.

The first fish crossed. The second tried to turn inside the fold and caught its dorsal fin against wet cord.

Jiang’s head followed the movement. He kept both feet planted outside the release lane.

Nera lowered her side instead of pulling the fish through. Olan fed six centimeters of slack. The trapped fin cleared without skin contact or cord drag, and the fish left under its own movement.

No third body moved.

The pocket remained open through two full water passes. North, south, and human observers each recorded movement0. Only then did Olan remove the shore weight from the access rail.

Wet gear drained for one minute. The workers weighed the north float group, south float group, and human corner group before removing each from the boards. They repeated all three tare weights after the edible bodies reached the clean pan.

The clean pan settled at13.8kg.

Nera checked body count. Olan checked the pan and counterweight. Each rookery pair checked that no member of its living release had entered the edible row. All four records matched.

Nera closed her release role. Olan closed the shore weight. North2 and south2 closed under separate rookery answers.

[Standing duty0]

Jiang received no system credit for waiting until the living fish were gone. He considered that the first tasteful decision the interface had made all day.

Hessa moved the ration board away from the covered later carrier. Its same-set lock had expired during accounting.

"Now we can make bad decisions while fed," Jiang said.

"Bounded decisions," Conti corrected.

She presented three physical anchor stands with two meters between them. None touched a living body. Each offer displayed its price before the pressure route opened.

[TEMPORARY ANCHOR REVIEW]

[Current-choice candidate1/3]

[Anchor offers3]

[Simultaneous acceptance0]

[Living carriers0]

[Ownership grant0]

[Historical identity0]

The first stand held the modern edition used in Jiang’s permanent Memory Dive. Conti remained its physical custodian under preservation procedure. Route custody, institutional ownership of the pressure, and historical authority remained0.

Accepting the edition would attach the temporary pressure route to its existing index order. Release would require reopening the selected-set boundary under the current custodian chain.

[ANCHOR OFFER A:MODERN EDITION]

[Existing records8 groups]

[Physical custodian:Conti]

[Route custody created if accepted1]

[Release requires custodian reopening1]

[Historical contamination risk1]

[Exterior independent release0]

The pressure crossed the offer edge and withdrew without entering the edition.

[OFFER A RESULT]

[Accepted0]

[Edition attachment0]

[Custody effect0]

[Record changes0]

The claimant wrote `WITNESS REJECTS ITS OWN HISTORY.`

The edition was not proven to be its history. The sentence gained effect0.

The second stand held the ownerless double-capped tube containing four blinded-Rod records and one Witness history. Narrow-Call, Ash-Brow, Scar-Toe, and White-Flank retained joint stop authority over the sealed tube. The Rod itself remained feather-blinded on its fresh strap with current relic load100% and sight exposure0.

Accepting the tube would create contact with one sealed record boundary. It would also place the pressure beside a preserved Witness history that already copied carrying calls.

[ANCHOR OFFER B:ROD RECORD TUBE]

[Owner:none]

[Sealed records5]

[Living guards4 with stop authority]

[Record-boundary exposure1 if accepted]

[Copied-history overlap risk1]

[Sight restoration0]

[Independent exterior release0]

Pressure reached the tube’s outer blind sleeve and stopped. It did not enter either cap, the Rod record lanes, or the Witness history.

[OFFER B RESULT]

[Accepted0]

[Tube attachment0]

[Sealed records opened0/5]

[Sight exposure0]

[Guard burden change0]

The claimant replaced `ITS OWN HISTORY` with `FEAR OF TRUTH`. Neither line supplied a source.

The third stand held a blank quarantine slate on an ownerless stone cradle. It had never carried a historical packet, living identity, legal status, Rod record, or claimant sentence. Hessa had cut two exterior release grooves into opposite edges after Catch9 launched.

The offer carried a physical price rather than a custodian.

[ANCHOR OFFER C:OWNERLESS SLATE]

[Records0]

[Owner:none | custodian:none]

[Integrity100]

[Temporary maximum00:30]

[Exterior release grooves2]

[Emergency exterior stop:Hessa]

[Living attachment0]

[Historical attachment0]

While anchored, the slate could carry no other route and could not enter an inventory, shelter, body, or institutional cabinet. Release could use either exterior groove without permission from Jiang, Aylin, Conti, Hessa, or the system.

Jiang read the last line twice. "It can leave even if we dislike when it chooses?"

"That is the point," Aylin said.

Hessa opened Offer C at00:00.

Cold saltwater pressure left the later carrier’s edge and appeared across the blank slate. Directional warmth leaned from the center toward both release grooves, then settled without selecting either exit.

The claimant tried to write `OWNER:JIANG` across the slate.

No letters adhered to the slate.

[OFFER C ACCEPTANCE]

[Current pressure on slate1]

[Later carrier pressure0]

[Slate records gained0]

[Owner/custodian0]

[Binding0]

[Soul transfer0]

[Identity transfer0]

[Exterior release preserved2]

The current pressure remained on the slate after the later carrier closed. It had accepted a temporary physical relation that neither of the record-bearing offers provided.

[INDEPENDENT ANCHOR REVIEW]

[Choice continuity1]

[Record-bearing anchors refused2/2]

[Ownerless temporary anchor accepted1]

[Living payer0]

[Historical person/soul identity0]

[Soul Anchorage candidate2/3]

[Release candidate0/3]

The system retained candidate2/3 under the narrower record: current choice1, independent accepted anchor1, voluntary release0. Soul classification, identity, history, guilt, ownership, and legal status remained0.

Hessa closed the offer stands without closing the slate. Edition and Rod tube restored with contact0 and changes0. The later carrier restored with pressure0 and record changes0.

Food stood3:21. Fuel remained0. Slate integrity remained100, anchor time00:06/00:30, and release grooves stayed2/2.

Jiang remained Pressure60, Cold16/47, mobility12%, Memory Dive uses3, Abyss Pressure uses2, Soul candidate2/3, and EP0.

The claimant returned to the later carrier and wrote one final line.

`THE SLATE IS THE WESTFJORDS SURVIVOR.`

The ownerless slate carried no name at all.
