Chapter 350: The Label Kept Talking After the Pressure Stopped
The pressure stopped halfway through the word `WITNESS`.
The word finished anyway.
Jiang stayed between the breast chocks while Conti sealed the later carrier under a clear custody plate. Memory Dive still showed a same-set lock of00:30. Nobody needed to enter the record to notice that its label and its pressure had failed to share a clock.

Hessa kept the exterior stop even though Jiang would remain awake. Aylin held two fresh covers: one clear, one opaque. Conti retained the carrier itself. The roles did not merge merely because the dangerous part had become smaller.
“Which one are we testing first?” Jiang asked.
“The boast,” Aylin said.
The completed line read `EXTERNAL ALTERNATE WITNESS` above the blank source field. It carried no citation, person record, sender mark, or physical attachment.
Conti placed the fresh opaque cover over the text while leaving the carrier’s pressure edge exposed. The cover had been cut from unused preservation stock after the label appeared. It contained no translation, index, or prior claimant contact.

Jiang settled both emperor feet against the plate’s lower stops. His claws prevented the cover from sliding without touching the carrier. His tail rested across a separate current-response strip, and his beak remained above the pressure edge.
Cold saltwater pressure returned beneath his breast.
No words appeared on the opaque cover. The hard rolling impact crossed left to right. Directional warmth leaned toward the sealed mark, then held there without warming his feathers.

The system proposed that the hidden words were still commanding the pressure from beneath the cover.
Jiang looked at the blank material above his beak. “That proposal can join the other things we did not measure.”
Conti recorded text-visible0 and pressure-present1. She did not record text-source0 because hiding a sentence was not the same as removing whatever produced it.
Aylin lifted the cover only after the pressure ended. The label remained in place. Its letters had not advanced, changed, or acknowledged the interval.

“Now the borrowed language,” Aylin said.
The label used the modern English terminology attached to the Earth protocol. Conti removed the sealed English translation key from the display surface and replaced it with an untranslated category index. No historical packet entered the test.
The letters above the source field lost readable spacing. They remained as an external mark, but `EXTERNAL`, `ALTERNATE`, and `WITNESS` could no longer be assigned from the active display.

Pressure returned while the mark was unreadable.
Jiang shifted his right foot to the second current stop. His claws made a short scrape against the preservation plate. The pressure changed direction0 and amplitude0.
He moved his tail from the response strip without altering either foot. The pressure changed direction0 and amplitude0 again.

The pressure reached the blank source field. The unreadable mark extended one line downward as if preparing another sentence.
Hessa raised her stop card but did not use it. Aylin kept both hands off the plate. Conti spoke no instruction. Jiang made no exit choice because he had never entered Memory Dive.
The pressure stopped on its own.
Conti’s current clock marked00:17. The external mark continued extending for another00:06, which gave the two effects different end times as well as different visibility requirements.
Hessa checked every physical trigger before anyone changed the setup. The carrier had not shifted against Jiang’s emperor feet. The opaque cover remained off the plate. The English key remained outside the display surface. Aylin’s folded test card was still blank because she had not written it yet.
No participant had moved during the final three seconds. The current room had supplied no spoken stop, physical tap, route closure, or exterior command.
That removed several cheap explanations. It did not remove an internal timer, an unmeasured carrier threshold, or a source condition they had not learned to observe.

The external mark continued extending after the pressure had ended. Without the English key, it could not be read. Its timing still failed to control the thing it claimed to label.
The system offered a result before anyone restored the translation.
[WITNESS REFUSAL CONFIRMED]
“Confirmed by what?” Jiang asked.
A stop without an external command could be a current choice. It could also be a timer, carrier limit, pressure cycle, or response to an unmeasured condition. Calling it refusal would spend the conclusion before the test existed.
Aylin lowered Hessa’s unused stop card back to the table. “We need a condition it cannot know before opening.”
“And a wrong condition the text can predict,” Conti said.
Hessa added a third column. “And a valid reason to stop that does not depend on any of us deciding for it.”
Jiang looked down at his own body. Beak, two feet, flippers, and tail gave them five current positions that no historical page could supply. A post-open order could name one valid stop and one false stop after the carrier was already active.
That would test a new answer. It would not identify the answerer.

Conti restored the English key after both pressure and external mark had stopped changing.
The new line became readable.
`CURRENT JIANG CANNOT HEAR THIS WITNESS.`
Jiang had heard no voice. He had felt pressure, watched borrowed text, and remained awake throughout. The sentence had chosen a weakness broad enough to sound useful and narrow enough to avoid measurement.

“It is correct that I did not hear a witness,” Jiang said. “It has not shown us one.”
The carrier offered no reply.
Hessa closed the exterior interval at01:09. Conti checked the slate’s five physical groups, cover, translation key, timestamp, and blank source field. All restored without mass, order, temperature, or index change.

Memory Dive permanent uses remained3. The later-carrier lock counted down to00:23. Pressure60, Cold16/47, mobility12%, wound1.1cm, bleeding0, Abyss Pressure uses2, Soul Anchorage candidate0/3, and EP0 remained unchanged.
Food stood1:31. Fuel remained0.
Aylin wrote the post-open order on a blank card and folded it before anyone could read it.
The claimant wrote `LEFT FOOT` on the carrier.
Aylin had not written left foot.
