The transfer order gave Conti eight minutes to surrender a collection she could no longer access.

Her suspension had closed the conservation database. It had not opened the sealed cabinet, moved Paolo’s surrendered key, or turned either Jiang claimant into an object.

She sent one final observation request before the red band covered her screen.

He pressed the lancet into the old line across his palm. Blood reached the collection pad. Martelli closed that hand around the small cross at his neck and began the prayer that had once formed chains inside Gredudande’s attack.

The words named three people and two exits. They asked for nothing to be punished.

Paolo stopped writing the room count long enough to face him.

"You were bleeding and under attack."

"Those are circumstances," Martelli said. "They are not an eraser."

He requested that the competent ordinary consider a preliminary investigation into the facts, circumstances, and his responsibility. The statement accused no one else. It asked that good names and the sealed evidence be protected while the proper authority decided whether any canonical process was warranted.
