Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 213: The Star-Lance Burned Through Cairnspire’s Lowest Bridge
Red fire reached Jiang before the white lance reached Cairnspire.
The bronze eye beside his face snapped toward the bridge. Irra’s drawline jumped in the wound, and the clean-shell wedge kicked against Jiang’s good foot.
One of the buried barbs turned.
Morrowfin’s flesh tightened above it.
"Do not pull me yet," Jiang called.
Aylin’s line went taut anyway, not enough to drag him out, only enough to tell him where she was.
"The weapon is moving," she said.
"Inward. If I leave now, it tears her."
Aylin wanted him out; the line made that plain. What she did not do was turn fear into a command and drag him through Morrowfin’s wound.
Across the feeder gate, Vessa Rane watched red light climb the rune mast and spill over the lowest bridge. She struck her hammer against the nearest tooth in a falling rhythm.
Cairnspire moved before she finished.
People on the low span abandoned shell baskets and climbing coils. They took the fixed wall rungs upward instead of running toward the inner bridge. Haul-out keepers ripped the release cloth from the animal shelves. Blue-throated wyverns slid from stone into black water, while smaller finned beasts fled through gaps no armored rider could have crossed.
An old bridge worker stopped for a dropped hammer.
Vessa threw hers past his head.
It struck the abandoned tool and knocked it over the edge.
"Your hands are still attached," she shouted. "Take those."
The worker climbed without looking back.
Beyond Morrowfin’s raised shoulder, the star-lance came through the black water like a burning seam. Her wake bent it, but the red guide kept drawing the weapon back toward the roost.
Irra saw where the guide ended. "The drawline is carrying it to your haul wheel."
"I can see my own bridge burning," Vessa said.
"Then give me another anchor."
"There isn’t one outside the sleeping shelves."
Irra looked once at the packed shells above them and stopped asking.
Her crew wrapped both ends of the drawline around cloth-covered forearms. On Skykeel, Aylin passed the return length to Olsa’s hunters. They took it without a word from Olsa and spread their footing along the surviving center root.
Nobody on either line pulled.
Inside the wound, the tooth grew hot beneath Jiang’s foot.
He shifted his webbing across the clean shell until its dull edge covered the lower barb. His bad leg floated behind him. The hip would not answer, and every effort to bend it turned the black water bright at the edges of his sight.
Morrowfin’s breathing slits opened above him.
Water pressed into the channel, then eased.
"Aylin," Jiang said. "Her breath first."
She crouched at the feeder opening with one hand around his retrieval line and the other against the iron tooth. Her eyes moved from the water leaving Morrowfin’s jaw to the crews waiting on Irra’s line.
"Not our breath," Aylin called. "Hers."
Vessa reached the bridge haul wheel. Her own old hammer marks crossed its black rim, buried beneath repairs made by other hands. She hated those familiar marks for making the choice feel like cutting through her own hand. Then she set both feet against the brake bar.
The last keeper climbed above the lowest span.
Only then did Vessa cut its inward ladders.
Iron links fell away from the upper bridge. The low span remained under Cairnspire, empty and lit red, connected to the roost only by its outer hinges and the haul wheel.
The incoming lance brightened.
Morrowfin could have closed her wing around Jiang and the tooth. Instead, she rolled her wounded joint away from the clean shell.
The movement was small enough that nobody outside saw it.
Jiang felt living tissue lift from the metal.
"Now, while she holds it," he said.
Aylin made him wait.
Morrowfin released the rest of her breath. Black water flowed out through the channel, carrying blood, white sparks, and Jiang’s loose breast feathers toward the gate.
"Now! On her breath!"
Irra’s crew leaned away from the wound. Olsa’s hunters took the return line across Skykeel. Vessa kicked the brake bar free, and Cairnspire’s haul wheel turned with them.
The tooth shifted against Jiang’s shell wedge.
Its lower barb cleared first.
The upper barb caught.
Pain traveled through Morrowfin’s body as a sound Jiang felt in his bones. Her fold began to close.
He pushed the shell higher with his good foot. The pressure folded his webbing against the metal, but the dull edge entered between the second barb and the lifted wound.
"Keep the pull level," he called.
"We cannot see level," Irra answered.
"Aylin can see me."
Aylin lowered herself until half her body hung over Skykeel’s edge. The ankle line crossed her wrist. Through the narrow gate slit, she found the angle of Jiang’s tail and the bright edge of clean shell.
"Toward Ashwake," she shouted. "Not upward. Give the wing room."
Irra stepped down from the ledge and changed the draw with her own weight. Her crew followed. Across the gap, the hunters let the return length slide over cloth rather than sawing it against Skykeel’s root.
The upper barb came free.
Morrowfin opened her fold before the metal could strike her again.
The chain tooth shot through the feeder throat. Its broken end struck a gate tooth, threw white sparks over Vessa, and swung from the drawline toward Cairnspire’s empty span.
Aylin pulled Jiang toward her.
The retrieval loop caught his sound ankle and turned him sideways. His bare breast scraped the clean shell as he left. He bit down on his own cry, failed, and came through the slit with his beak open and blood bright on his tongue.
Irra caught his shoulders in the silver cloth.
"I said one entry," Aylin told him.
"This remains the same one."
"That defense is getting worse."
"So is the day."
She took him from Irra and wrapped his stripped breast before the wind could reach it.
Behind them, the freed tooth swung over the lowest bridge. Red fire followed it across the drawline.
Vessa could have locked the haul wheel and brought the weapon against Cairnspire’s gate. Instead, she drove her hammer through the brake rope.
The wheel spun loose.
Tooth, line, and guide fire whipped away from Morrowfin and landed in the middle of the abandoned bridge.
The star-lance arrived.
White fire punched through the span. Black slabs lifted, showed their pale dead-star cores, and broke apart before they reached the water. The outer hinges tore free. Because Vessa had cut the ladders, the falling bridge did not pull the inhabited spans after it.
Its far end struck the empty haul-out shelf below.
Stone burst upward. The shelf vanished under falling bridge plates, and the lower section of Cairnspire’s rune mast burned white from the inside. Every guide mark on it flared, curled, and went dark.
Vessa remained beside the loose haul wheel until Irra caught her by the coat collar.
The mast section fell where she had been standing.
Both women hit the outer ledge. Vessa’s hammer left her hand and disappeared with the bridge.
The blast wave reached Morrowfin next.
Her wounded fold closed over the cleaned channel. She drove her sound wing down, not toward the people on the ledge but beneath the falling shelf. The wake turned the largest slabs away from the feeder throat. Smaller pieces struck her back and slid into the water.
No rein touched her. No call directed the stroke.
When the white fire faded, Cairnspire’s lowest bridge was gone.
The haul-out shelf beneath it was a torn hollow. Half the lower rune mast hung over empty water, its guide marks dead. Above the damage, residents clung to the wall rungs, keepers counted animals by touch, and wet wyverns climbed onto separate outer shells.
Nobody remained on the lost span.
Vessa looked at the empty place where her haul wheel had been. Powder from the bridge had settled across her burned sleeve. She rubbed it between thumb and finger, then wiped the hand on her coat.
Around Cairnspire, rival guild banners began to move.
One bridge lowered long shell-spears toward the command ship. Another opened its beast channels and released broad-winged swimmers into Morrowfin’s broken wake. Far above, a banner that had kept every shutter closed rolled its stone throwers to the outer edge.
Their weapons did not turn toward Skykeel.
The command ship had put its fire through Cairnspire’s body. The roost answered with steel, shell, and wings.
Vessa recovered a smaller hammer from the belt of the worker she had driven off the bridge.
"Open the burned shelf," she said.
The worker stared at the hollow below. "It is exposed to the outer water."
"So are the wounded."
A shell ramp descended from a side hinge that had survived the blast. It reached only the scorched shelf beside the ruined span, far from Cairnspire’s inhabited interior.
Vessa pointed the borrowed hammer at Aylin. "The penguin and anyone keeping him alive. No city. No hook."
"Then we agree," Aylin said.
"I did not offer agreement. I offered dry stone."
"Then we will use the stone."
Irra helped carry Jiang across in the silver cloth. His sound foot trembled against the sling. The bad leg remained straight, and the fresh pull at his ankle had opened the old pain along his hip.
On the shelf, Aylin chose a hollow away from the broken mast. She placed dry cloth beneath him and warm shell pieces along his feathered side, leaving his chest uncovered and room for him to crawl away.
No one offered water. No one tried to make him swallow food.
Jiang heard Cairnspire arming above him and Morrowfin breathing in the outer dark. He tried to lift his head toward both sounds.
Aylin held the cloth, not him. "You are done entering wounds today."
"That sounds narrowly written."
"I can make it broader."
His laugh became a shiver before it reached his throat.
Warmth returned slowly around the surviving breast feathers. Pain came with it, sharp at the roots and dull beneath the skin. The bare center stayed cold.
Then a different cold moved through the damaged follicles.
It did not come from the shelf or the wind. It traveled root by root beneath Aylin’s hand, following the exact border where feathers had been torn away.
Jiang closed his eyes before the waiting choice could open.
No words appeared. No wound closed.
The first evolution remained sealed, but its cold had already settled into every damaged feather root.
