Chapter 186: The Falling Nursery Struck the Bellmother
The nursery district stopped falling and began being reeled in.
Its scar chain pulled tight above the roofs. The platform’s downward roll became a long sideways swing, turning the saved city into a scatter of lights behind them and the Bellmother into a dark coast ahead.
Beras opened both wings against the air.
His frame screamed at the joints. One sail buckled, caught again, and slowed the district just enough to keep its roofs from becoming the leading edge.
"Neris, cut the east awning!" he shouted.
The bloodied Hook Choir hunter left Aylin’s rope, ran along the tilted roof, and slashed through a broad strip of sailcloth. She did not let it fly. Two residents caught the loose corners, and together they opened the awning behind the district as a second drag wing.
The strain bent their roof post farther.
Aylin’s line shifted across her ribs. It still ran through the occupied cradle, around Kesta, and back to that failing post. If the wood tore free, the old man and the living bell inside his cradle would leave with it.
"Tovar!" the mother shouted. "Untie yourself!"
The old tender shook his head and threw another loop around the wheel.
Kesta reached the post on her brass hook. "He says the cradle has an inner water shell. He keeps it upright or the juvenile cannot breathe when we strike."
"Then we keep him upright too," Aylin said.
She crawled along the rope and moved its final turn from the post to a chain bracket buried beneath the roof. Neris braced her boots beside Aylin while Kesta drove her hook into the bracket seam.
Wood split somewhere above them.
Jiang saw the broken post coming before anyone standing did.
He dropped flat and ran beneath the awning line. His belly passed under a roof spar that caught Beras at the knee. Jiang reached the cradle wheel, braced his better foot beneath the lower rim, and shoved.
The wheel rolled away from the falling post.
Jiang remained beneath its path.
His bad leg collapsed beneath him. The post struck the deck across his tail feathers and pinned the loose edge of one flipper. Pain flashed from shoulder to hip before Aylin and Neris lifted the wood together.
Jiang dragged himself clear.
Tovar leaned down from the cradle. His hand hovered above Jiang’s back, uncertain whether help would be welcomed.
Jiang bit the old man’s sleeve and pulled him toward the wheel.
Whatever Tovar said made Kesta bark a laugh despite the district swinging toward disaster.
"He called you an ugly nurse," she translated.
Jiang snapped his beak once.
"He has corrected it to angry nurse."
The mother reached them on hands and knees. Someone called her Dema from the upper roof. She looked toward the voice and saw her own home tearing loose at one corner.
Its door had opened during the roll. Warm stones, folded bedding, painted shell toys, and a small copper stove slid against the remaining wall.
One roof rope still connected the house to the nursery platform.
Dema could have caught it.
Instead, she cut the rope before the home swung through the cradles.
The room where her family had slept turned once in open air. Painted toys scattered behind it. Then the whole structure dropped away beneath Skykeel’s distant lights.
One little shell wyvern caught in the cradle rope. Dema saw it, then saw the wheel slipping again and kept both hands on the living bell. Jiang hooked the toy closer with his beak and shoved it under her wrist. She closed one finger over it without loosening the other nine.
Dema kept watching until another chain jolt threw her against Tovar’s cradle.
No one told her it was only a house.
The Bellmother filled the world ahead.
Water lay against her back in a trembling ceiling, its lower skin dragged downward by the scar chain. White ridges crossed black-gray hide. Each old line was broader than a Skykeel bridge, and the raw groove around the buried iron opened and closed as she moved.
"Tie every wing," Beras called. "Water takes us next."
Neris looped the cut awning around the residents nearest her. Kesta wrapped her damaged frame against her ribs. Beras collapsed both sails before they could fill with trapped air.
Aylin put one arm through the cradle rope and the other around Jiang’s middle.
He knocked her wrist with his beak’s intact edge.
"I know," she said. "Not carrying. I am keeping you on the district until there is water."
Jiang stopped fighting her grip.
The first roof entered the ceiling sea.
Water did not meet them like rain. It caught the upper tower, pulled it in, and turned the entire district so sharply that air left every human chest at once. Broken windows became mouths. Warm-stone baskets lifted. Roots that had hung loose in air spread through the flood like pale fingers.
Beras’s bound sails still dragged him upward.
Jiang became weightless in Aylin’s arm.
He stepped free of her without kicking the injured shoulder and swam.
Cold water passed under his feathers. The bad leg could no longer ruin his balance; his body curved around its weakness. Jiang cut beneath Beras, bit the cord holding one folded sail, and pulled it lower so the wingman’s trapped air escaped along the root floor.
Beras found a handhold and pulled himself down.
Kesta needed no rescue. She had hooked Tovar’s cradle to the chain bracket and was kicking against the current beside Dema. Neris kept three residents inside the cut awning while Aylin moved hand over hand along their rope, freeing it from roof corners before each snag could cut someone in half.
The district continued entering water unevenly.
An empty cage root broke from its supports and rose toward the ceiling sea. Jiang followed long enough to make sure no body clung inside. Then he turned back. Saving an empty cage was not worth losing the occupied cradle behind him.
The scar chain shortened.
It drew Tovar’s cradle first.
Iron beneath the wheel had once connected to Skykeel’s center ring. Now it belonged only to the chain buried in the Bellmother. The cradle rolled across the flooded deck despite Tovar’s brake, towing Kesta, Dema, and Aylin after it.
Jiang reached the front rim and pushed with both feet.
His bad leg gave almost nothing. The cradle kept moving.
Tovar opened an inner flap. Water rushed through the shell around the juvenile. A broad pale mouth appeared between layers of padding, followed by one dark eye and a notched fin.
The living bell did not scream.
It gripped the cradle wall and changed its call as the current changed, a low folding note Jiang felt through his feet.
Ahead, the Bellmother’s scar opened around the iron.
White ridges drew apart. Fresh blood clouded the water in dark threads. The chain vanished into a wound deep enough to swallow the cradle and everyone tied behind it.
Then the district struck her body.
Roofs folded. Roots broke. Beras and Neris disappeared beneath the awning. Aylin’s rope snapped tight enough to pull Kesta off her hook.
Jiang hit the cradle shell beak-first.
When his sight cleared, half the district lay pinned against the Bellmother’s flank.
One nursery roof had collapsed into the wound-side street. Another floated above the platform with its roots hanging down, held only by Neris’s cut awning. Residents surfaced beneath broken beams and found one another by hands, coughing air pockets, and the rope Aylin refused to release.
Tovar’s cradle was no longer on the deck.
The scar had begun drawing it inside.
