Chapter 174: Mottle Climbed the Bell That Grounded Her
Mottle put her mouth against Widow’s Needle and heard herself inside the stone.
A copied landing cough traveled down the storm chains, paused where she paused, and returned from above in a cleaner voice than the one her wounded gums could make.
Ilex sat at the rain-run mouth with her bound leg straight across the bridge. "That is not you."
Mottle gave one rough cough.
Stone returned it cleanly.
Ilex struck the bridge with her fist, then rested the same hand against Mottle’s neck. "That is."
Widow’s Needle rose above them without a stair. Old storm chains crossed its outer face and vanished into slits where rain came out red with stone dust. Riders reached the upper anchor by air. A grounded wyvern had only chains, broken bridge pegs, and ledges too narrow for spread wings.
Ilex had crossed those chains in Mottle’s saddle before the crash. She remembered which peg Harrow replaced after a frost split and which chain Mottle hated after a bad crosswind landing. Speaking those memories would only give the root another voice to wear. The loose line could carry a choice without explaining it.
Mottle caught a loose climbing line between her teeth.
Ilex held the other end without tying it to either of them.
"If you release, I release," she said. "If I fall off this bridge, you are permitted one insulting look before you continue."
Mottle pulled until the line carried tension, then stepped onto the first chain.
Jiang entered the rain run beneath her.
Aylin followed as far as her shoulders allowed. She had no silver left to brace the stone and no knife to cut the black-green fiber. Valea arrived with her bent road knife, and Hest brought the iron bar that had already survived several jobs its maker would have refused to name.
Valea handed Aylin the knife hilt-first. "It bends left."
"Jiang’s leg bends that way too."
"Then the expedition has a theme."
Jiang looked back from the shallow water and snapped his beak at both of them.
Hest lowered the iron bar across the mouth before the spire could shed another stone. "Add temperament."
Inside Widow’s Needle, the run curved upward.
Water pressed down its center while dry red ribs rose along either wall. Jiang moved with one foot in the flow and one on stone. The bad leg slipped whenever the curve tightened, but his belly stayed low enough to pass beneath the copper eyes feeding the storm chains.
Above the hidden run, Mottle climbed.
Her front claws hooked one chain link at a time. The rear claws searched for bridge pegs worn smooth by rain. She kept the injured wing shut even when the Bellwyrm rolled through cloud and every storm chain shook beneath her.
Ilex changed the line pressure after each step.
One long pull became two short. Two short became slack followed by a brush against the chain. Mottle never received the same answer twice, and nothing inside the stone could touch the line between their bodies.
Ilex’s voice called from above.
"Test the left claw, Mottle."
Ilex said nothing from the real bridge.
Mottle tested the left peg with one claw. It broke from the stone and fell past her breast.
She chose the right peg.
Using Ilex’s exact tired laugh, the false voice answered.
At the cold ledge below, Harrow’s late-third call sounded beside Bracken.
The pale parent lifted her head from the egg. Bracken stood over the blue strand, staring toward Widow’s Needle while the copied call repeated from a bridge behind him.
Harrow’s voice had once meant move.
Bracken lowered his damaged wing over the pale egg.
Behind him, the copied call rang again without changing.
Bracken stayed over the egg.
Inside the Needle, Jiang reached the first anchor chamber.
It was not a room built for people. Three storm chains passed through a hollow in the stone and wrapped a copper bell larger than Mottle. The crown had been driven into the spire until red rock grew around its rim. Black-green fiber filled the open throat and climbed toward the top anchor.
Claw grooves scored the old copper. Faded strips of flight cloth remained beneath the stone that had grown around it. This anchor had not begun as a trap. Generations of riders and wyverns had worn those marks while calling lost pairs through storms. The feeder had taken something trusted because trust already knew how to travel.
Mottle’s homebell hung inside that larger bell.
The small copper crown had been pulled through a split and fused to the feeder. Each beat against the old anchor sent Mottle’s cough through every chain.
Jiang pecked the inner wall beneath it.
Aylin heard the knock through the wet run. She wedged Valea’s bent knife behind a red stone rib and pushed the handle toward Hest.
"It bends left," Valea reminded her.
"Today, a left bend helps."
Hest leaned the iron bar against the knife spine. The red rib shifted away from the anchor by the width of its own crack.
Jiang squeezed through the crack.
The feeder hung above his beak. Mottle’s bell remained beyond it, too high for him and too deep for any hand outside the stone.
Mottle reached the upper slit.
The final ledge ended below her chest. Above it, the old anchor’s outer crown curved from the spire like a copper jaw. Her homebell rang inside.
Ilex gave one long pull on the loose line.
Mottle answered with two small bites.
The stone returned Ilex’s voice. "Come back."
Mottle let the line fall.
Ilex opened her hand at once. The rope fell free between them instead of tightening around Mottle’s neck or dragging her from the ledge.
For one breath, they had no connection the root could copy.
Mottle climbed without the line.
She hooked both front claws over the copper crown. Her grounded body hung against Widow’s Needle while rear claws scraped for the broken final peg. The injured wing opened despite her effort to keep it closed.
The Bellwyrm came out of cloud.
Broken bells clattered between its teeth. Its scaled body struck the outer chains and wrapped halfway around the spire, not hunting Mottle so much as defending the pressure buried in its jaw.
Mottle’s stolen homebell swung within the old anchor.
That copper had brought Ilex back through sleet when torchlight failed. It had carried Mottle’s frightened landing cough before Ilex learned the difference between fear and refusal. The repair seam beneath Mottle’s teeth came from a night when they landed together badly and laughed only after both stopped bleeding.
Her jaws closed on copper.
Copper tore her healing gums open. Blood ran over the crown and made the first grip slide. Mottle shifted her jaw to the old repair seam Ilex had once mended after a bad landing.
The Bellwyrm wrenched the feeder.
Black-green fiber snapped tight through the anchor. One of Mottle’s damaged flight feathers caught between chain and stone. The shaft bent backward without releasing.
Ilex saw the wing jerk.
She had no line to pull and no saddle from which to command. She struck the bridge once with her fist, changed to two taps with her palm, and waited.
The real rhythm reached Mottle through iron.
Mottle folded the trapped wing.
The feather tore loose and fell.
She did not follow it with her eyes. Her teeth closed on the repaired place in the homebell until the small crown collapsed inward.
Mottle bit the seam again.
Her homebell broke from the feeder.
The false cough stopped halfway through its answer.
Inside the anchor chamber, black-green fiber recoiled past Jiang. He flattened against the wet stone while Aylin, Valea, and Hest held the cracked red rib open behind him.
The old storm bell split from crown to throat.
Widow’s Needle opened behind it.
There was no stone on the other side.
An ocean hung upside down across a black-green sky. Beneath it, towers floated from chains thick as bridges. Winged bodies larger than the Bellwyrm crossed between them, and bells moved under those enormous wings with the flex of living throats.
One distant city rang Mottle’s broken cough.
Then the anchor began falling toward the nursery road.
