Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 150: The Penguin Broke the Borrowed Voice
Using Varn’s voice, the callbody came at Hest.
"Source chain stays," it ordered again.
Hest did not strike the armored knee. The thing had already learned that blow.
He dropped both broken bars beneath its remaining arm and crossed them against the cobbles. When the bronze limb swept down, iron rolled under it. Its own weight carried the hollow throat past Hest and toward the emperor family.
"That was not permission," Hest said.
Valea cut the rain channel behind the body. She did not turn the road or send its weight away. Water from the abandoned smithing lane spilled across the black-green puddle under its roots and showed where the severed source still leaked into the bronze.
Pava saw the dark connection.
She threw Varn’s empty, broken breath tube through it.
Glass carried nothing the body could steal. The sharp end opened the wet seam from underneath, and black-green water poured onto ordinary stone.
After the cut, the callbody changed.
Bronze plates closed around the leak. Its arm bent away from Hest’s rolling bars. One root hooked Pava’s screen before she could use the glass twice.
Jiang had expected the delay.
He had not expected the body to use the mother’s voice next.
Her exact family call came from the hollow throat. It carried the father’s broken pause, the chick’s impatient middle, and the rough ending born after she lost the two-moon road.
A small answer came through the mother’s brood feathers.
With one foot, the mother struck the hide.
Her warning reached the chick through feathers, but the small call had already crossed the rain channel. Bronze drank it. A new root pushed out of the body and crawled toward the warm sound.
Between root and chick, the male tried to put himself in the way.
His legs folded without lifting him. Jiang left the mother’s ordinary warmth and pressed his wet body along the father’s side. Together they made one low barrier while the female kept the chick above her feet.
Nobody could carry all four birds away before the root reached them.
Brinn rapped the green shard against Tir’s bandaged hand.
Tir changed the answer on Elen’s shoulder. Elen kicked the healer screen with her sound leg. The three Tideglass noises moved around the chamber without repeating a fixed place or ending.
Gredudande answered each one late.
Its root turned toward Brinn after she had moved. Clear ribs opened toward Tir after he ducked behind Hest. Elen’s copied kick struck from the street where her injured leg had never stood.
Still the family root kept coming.
Aylin caught the hide with her sound hand. Kedra hooked Hest’s iron grip through the opposite corner. They pulled in separate directions and gained only the width of Jiang’s beak before bronze roots fixed the cloth to the street.
Jiang heard the mother call above him.
Two voices left her breast together. One held a steady low line. The other moved around it, changing the beat that reached the chick through three adult bodies, rain, and a chamber full of false sound.
The father’s weaker answer crossed hers.
Then the chick broke both patterns because it wanted warmth, not music.
Jiang understood the part Gredudande kept missing.
The living calls were not clever because they changed. They changed because a living body knew who it was trying to reach.
Gredudande heard an ending and built backward.
Jiang opened his beak.
The crack hurt before sound came. Cold had tightened his chest, and one side of his throat dragged after the other. He let that unevenness remain.
His first voice rose toward the bronze throat.
The second stayed low.
For three pulses, they crossed in the old rough beat Gredudande had recorded beneath Antarctic ice.
Bronze copied both voices.
Jiang felt the two sources separately now. One trembled deep beside his heart. The other pressed against the scarred side of his breast. He held the first where it was and forced the second upward.
Pain ran from his throat to the split tip of his beak.
The beat changed between them.
Inside the callbody, one bronze slit followed it.
The other slit kept Jiang’s old voice.
Metal shuddered between them.
Black-green water struck the closed plates from inside. The root reaching for the chick stopped, split lengthwise, and exposed a wet strand no thicker than Brinn’s mask lace.
No one obeyed Jiang’s call.
They saw the body open and chose.
Hest levered the bronze arm backward with both bars. Valea put her road knife through the exposed strand without asking the street to move it. Pava drove the empty healer screen down over the hollow throat.
Brinn, Tir, and Elen struck three different living endings against the glass.
The callbody tried to adapt to all of them.
Jiang changed only one voice again.
The mother answered with both of hers. The male added his rough break. Their chick interrupted from the safest place the adults could make.
Too many living choices reached one borrowed throat.
Bronze tore from crown to base.
Varn’s copied voice came out backward. It lost the words first, then the breath it had never owned.
Hest kept the body pinned while Valea cut the last wet strand. Pava turned her screen so the black-green water spilled away from every mouth, wound, and broken tube.
Jiang drove his cracked beak into the open bronze seam.
The callbody fell apart around him.
One arm struck stone. Empty plates rolled into the rain channel. Pale roots greyed without the source below, and the remaining black water fled downhill in separate threads too thin to lift another body.
No Varn rose from them.
For several breaths, Ninebell held only living pain.
Tir sat because his legs stopped supporting him. Elen lowered beside him and kept pressure on her cut. Brinn held both of them without pretending the drowned hall had returned.
Pava touched two fingers to Hest’s wrist. He tried to pull away.
"That pulse is yours," she said. "I am checking."
Hest looked at the rain entering Varn’s empty chain links. "He would object to the attention."
"He is no longer in a position to make my work difficult."
Her voice broke on the final word.
Nobody repaired it for her.
The mother drew Jiang back against her free flank. The male rested on her other side. Warmth reached Jiang’s soaked skin slowly and without magic.
Only then did the System recognize what his body had already done.
[SYNCHRONIZATION: 75% -> 80% | EMPEROR TRAIT AWAKENED: TWO-VOICE CALL I]
No heat returned to Jiang’s feathers. His failed flipper stayed useless, his leg remained numb, and blood still marked the place his beak had struck bronze. Varn’s death produced no points and no reward.
The new trait left Jiang with a raw throat and one certainty: he could deliberately alter the beat of his own individual call. It could not give orders, borrow another voice, or hide where he stood.
From the warm pocket over her feet, the chick answered him anyway.
Valea reached the far end of the rain channel before anyone could breathe around the victory.
One black-green thread had escaped the cut.
It ran through the empty smithing road, crossed the ridge raker’s abandoned rain, and entered a bronze arch none of Ninebell’s workers had opened. Mountain light widened inside the frame.
Valea drove her knife into the threshold.
The road continued opening.
Beyond it, chain bridges hung between red cliffs taller than Ninebell’s towers. Armored hunters rode feathered wyverns through the gaps while something long and scaled turned inside the clouds above them. Copper flight bells filled the foreign sky.
One wounded wyvern fell out of that sky.
It struck the arch breast-first and crashed into Ninebell with a masked rider trapped beneath one wing. Broken harness bells scattered across the street.
The escaping black-green thread entered the largest bell.
Jiang called a warning in his new beat.
The wyvern opened its eyes.
From its copper harness came Jiang’s two voices.
